To all whom it may concern:-

Beit known that I, EDWIN L. HENDERSON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of N orwood, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bags, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the drawings accompanying this specification. p

' My invention relates to the manufacture of bags in general, and more particularly to bags made of fabric and having handles therefor. The main reason why my invention is applicable to fabric bags is because the strength of the construction makes it especially valuable where used with materials which need considerable reinforcement. It would be as readily available for leather bags as will be observed fromthe specification to follow;' I r Among other objects of'my invention are the provision of a means for carrying the load of the containerf portion thereof on binding strips in a specially durable and simple manner, said binding strips being brought together and stitched into the form of a handle, or shoulder strap, asthe case may be; i

The bag, as shown in the drawings is a newspaper bag or satchel in which the container portion is left open along one end to permit of the easy insertion and withdrawal of newspapers without removing the bag from the shoulder strap. It will be understood, however, that the bag could readily be closed at both ends, thereby becoming adaptable fora variety of uses, such as a mail carriers bag. When open at the end the device is also quite valuable for the workman who carries a variety o'f large tools with him during his work, as the feature a ready availability of the contents of the bag will be a value in this instance also.

The object of my invention is generally to provide a very strong and durable satchel or bag, having a handle or shoulder strap, and this I accomplish by that certain con struction and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more specifically pointed out and claimed, wherein among other things, a continuous double strip of tape or binding ma- Specification of Letters Patent. The binding strip is started at 5', leaving enoughito extend part way of the, shoulder strap, and is stitched double, (i the two portions of the strip are separated forming single strips 7 which are'stitched together with the material of thecontainer portion between them clear down one 'side around the base and backup the other side of the said container. At the upper edge of the other side of the container the strips are united directly to each other again at 8 and preferably allowed to extend a short distance so as not to close tightly the open mouth of the container; At 9, the double strip. is united to the original section and the two double stripsare stitched together, until the original portion has been entirely stitched to the running portion thereof. The

running portion is then ex tended'suiiiciently' to make a shoulder strap of thedesired length, and brought to the side of the container, at the far end of the bag from the first attachment at 6 and again separated at 10 to include the material of the container.

It is brought down around the container, back up and unitedagain at 11, just as at the other end of the device, and is again united to form a four ply tape at 12. The running portion is then stitched to the nonquadruple portion of the tape, and finally overlappedat 13, to form a six ply portion for the central portion of the handle or shoulder strap. a V

It can be readily observed that "there 1s no strain on the fabric or other material of" the bag at the point of attachment of the straps, and that the whole weight of the contents of the bag is sustained by the straps, if it is of sufficient length. But one double strip of binding serves the entire I function of providing the reinforcement,

The two ends of the binding strip or tape could, of course, be abutted instead of overlapped, Without destroying the value of the invention, although the overlapping'structure is the preferred one. 7

The method of holding the upper edges of the container together the desired amount by regulating the distance betweenthe upper edges of the bag and the unions at 12 and 9, is a valuable feature, as.is*the method of attachment of, the binding strip'along the edges of the container portion, so as toleave ning practicallythe length of the device.

a container vportion, and a continuous binder therefor, extending around the sides and base of the said containeriat the ends thereof on the inside and outside thereof, and united outside of the open end of the container to form; a handle whereby thestrain of attachment of the handle to the container is done away with and the binder supports by itself the weight sustained by it.

2. In a device of the character described,
