TH REE PIECE WATCH CASING. APPLICATION man OCT. 1, 1921.
Patented Dec. 13, 1921.
PATENT OFFIQE.
LOUIS LEHR, OF BAYONNE, NEW JERSEY.
THREE-PIECE WATCH-CASING.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 13, 19.21.
Application filed October 1, 1921. Serial No. 504,597.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, Louis Lane, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bayonne,
county of Hudson, and State of New J ersey,
have invented certain new and useful improvements in Three-Piece Watch-Casings,
fully described and represented in the following specification and the accompanying drawings, forming a part of the'same.
The present invention relates to a watchcasing formed in three independent parts, which are secured together by snap-joints so as to require no hinges.
One object of the invention is to provide means for holding the movement in the casing with the front and the back of the movement both accessible to view; and another object is to provide means for excluding dust from the movement.
The invention is applicable towatch-casings of any shape, but is particularly advantageous in connection with watch-cases having a so-callec fancy shape or outline, and in which a dial and crystal often have the same outline as the fancy casing.
The term fancy is used herein to desig nate any shape other than circular, as the improvements are equally applicable to all shapes.
The protection against dust is effected in the present invention by forming the body and the front with corresponding marginal flanges having the outline which distinguishes the design of the casing, so that when these flanges are engaged the entire peripheryof the casing is guarded against the entrance of dust.
Furthermore, a dust-collar forms a part of the body into which the movement is snugly fitted, so as to prevent the access of dust to the edges of the movement. The rear cover of the casing is snapped upon a bezel on the rear side of the body, and is easily removed when desired. I
The front is held to the body exclusively by the frictional "engagement of the two marginal flanges, which are made to fit one another accurately. These and other details of construction will be understood by reference to the annexed drawing, in which Figure 1 is a side view of the body with loops.
adapted to receive a wrist-strap; Fig. 2 shows the front side of the body; Fig. 3 the rear side, and Fig. 4 the inner side of the front which fits gainst the front side of the body. Fig. 5 shows the rear cover with a circular recess to snap upon the bezel on the body; Fig. 6 is a transverse section of the casing on line 6-6 in Fig. 2; Fig. 7 is a longitudinal section of the casing on line 7-7 in Fig. 2; and Fig. 8 shows the lefthand side of the view in Fig. 6, but greatly enlarged to show the details.
The margin of the body shown in Fig. 2 is of oblong fancy shape with a marginal flange a projected from one side, and a dustring or collar Z) attached to the flange by a plate 0, shown in Figs. 2 and 8. Owing to the oblong form of the body, pockets (Z exist between the marginal flange at the ends of the body and the adjacent sides of the dustring.
The dust-ring is made a little smaller than the interior of the marginal flange a, leaving a space 6 between the two into which the flange f upon the front f is snugly fitted, (see Fig. 4.)
The front is shown in Fig. 4 with a dialopening 9 of the same contour as the body, so that the front consists merely'of a narrow frame which is engaged at its margin with the body, and its inner side with the crystal h, which is shown in Figs. 6, 7 and 8.
The dust-flange f, as shown in Fig. 8, fully protects the joints between the frame of the front and the dust-ring.
The dust-ring is formed internally of two diameters with a shoulder i at their junction, and the movement shown at j in Fig. 6 is shaped to fit the said shoulder, which still further impedes the entrance of dust.
The rear side of the body is formed, as shown in Fig. 3, with a bezel-projection 7c, and the rear cover Z is shown with a recess m, which is fitted to snap over the bezel I: to hold the rear cover in place, as shown in Figs. 6 and 8.
In Fig. 8, the ring forming the bezel 7c is projected beyond the surface of the plate a, and the rim of the rear cover eXtends over the outer side of the bezel far enough to cover the joint of the back and the dustring, thus impeding the access of dust to the joint of the back at a. (See Fig. 8.)
The penetration of the flange f (upon the front) into the space 6 around the dust-ring b, is clearly shown in Fig. 8, and furnishes a very complete barrier against the access of dust to the joint of the front and the body.
Fig. 4 shows that the front is adapted to fully expose a dial of the same fancy design as the body of the casing. V
The use of a marginal flange upon the body and a border flange upon the front, are
' upon the body, and having a crystal-opening of any desired shape.
r 2; In a fancy watch-casing, the combination, with a body having a border flange of the fancy outline and a circular flange withinthe same wlth intermediate space between dial, having a body with a border flange of 7 them, of a front having a dust-flange of fancy outline to fit into the said space, and a rear cover held upon the bodyby abezel. 3. In a fancy watch-casing, the combination, with a body having a border flange of the fancy outline and a circular dust-ring with intermediate space between them, of a front having a dust-flange of the fancy out lineto fit within the border flange of the body, and a rear cover held upon the body by a bezel.
4:. A three-piece snap-casing for a fancy the fancy outline and a circular dust-ring within the same with intermediate space between them, a dial with fancy outline resting upon'the dust-ring, and a front having a dust-flange of fancy outline to fit into the said intermediate space, and having a crystal-opening for a crystal of the-fancy shape.
5. A' three-piece snap-casing for a fancy dial having a body of the'fancy outline, a rear cover having a circular bezel-connection with thegbody' and a front having a dust-flange holding it upon the body and formed with a crystal-opening for a dial with the fancy outline. 1
l 6. A three-piece snap-casing for a fancy dial having a body of the fancy outline with a border flange upon the front side and a dust-collar within the same, a rear cover having a circular bezehconnection with the body, :and a front having a dust-flange of fancy outline fitted between the borderflange upon the body and the dust-ring, the dust-flange extending across the joint between the front and the dust-ring to exclude dust from the saidring- 7. A three-piece snap-casing for a fancy' dial having a body of the fancy outline with a border flange upon the front side and a dust-ring within the same, forming pockets where'the fancy edge of the body projects outside of the collar, a rear cover iavi'ng'a circular bezel-connection with the body, and
a front having a dust-flange of the fancy outline fitted within'the border flange upon the body and excluding dust from the said pockets, the front having a crystal-opening for a dial withthe fancy outline.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand. 1
