To all whom it ma concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS OLINGER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Holland, in the county of Ottawa and State of Michigam-have invented certain new and' useful Improvements in Furnace-Registers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact'description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a register adapted to be placed at the exit of hot air pipes of furnaces, covering the same where it comes to a room which is heated thereby. Such registers in use are designed to be adjustable so as to pass a greater or less amount of hot air, being equipped. with a movably mounted closure which may be placed in different positions, either to com' pletely shut off the entrance of hot air from the furnace pipe or fully open to permit" the passage of the maximum amount ofheated air, or at any intermediate position as desired to suit conditions of the room.-
It is a primary object and purpose ofthe present invention to make a register of. thls character entirely of sheetmetal, of a minparts may be stam ed readily from sheet metal by use of suitable dies, and one in which the partsare very easily and quickly assembled substantially without the use of tools. Between the two central vertical bars 6 of the grating and where the same join the upper rib 2, two substantially triangular shaped integral sections 8 are left to serve as stops to limit the' movementof the operating handle ofthe closure as will later appear.
, The closure member for the register comprisesa plate 9 of sheet metal formed at its upper edge with a rolled head 10: of ashape and size to fit into the concaved recess in :the rear side of rib 2. Adjacent each end and immediately below the bead 10, openings 11 are cut through. which the tangs 7 may pass being afterward curvedupwardly as indicated in Fig. 7 to'permanently secure the closure plate in hinged relation to the plate 1' in which the grating is made. Plate 9 at its lower and side edges is formed with forwardly turned flanges 9 which, in the closed position of the closure plate enter the recesses in theback of ribs 3 and 4,-as is obvious. j
An operating handle member is used for moving the closure plate to dilferent positions. This member comprises a sheet metal relatively narrow plate 12, formed at its lower end with rearwardlyturned, downa opening of the closure member come into contact with the sections 8, heretoforedescribed, to limit the extent of opening or the closure plate. A tongue 17 is out from the handle member and turnedrearwardly, pass ing through an opening 18 in plate 9 and at its free end being turned upwardly, as shown at 19. "A leaf spring 26' is located against the rear side of the closure plate 9, the tongue 17 passing through an opening 21 therein with the upturned part 19 lying against the rear side of the spring and holding it "from disengagement; The effect of the spring is to normally draw the handle member 12 against the rib2, and in practice, preferably, the handle member is v curved, as" at 22 to conform partially to the shape of the rib 2, giving a larger bearing between them.
It is evident that with a construction" of 7 this character, the closure plate may be 'moved to any desired position between two limits and held therein, the spring 20 drawing handlemember 12 against the rib 2 cansing a binding thereagainst which serves to hold the closure plate I against movement. lVhen it is desired to move the closure plate to a different position, it is necessary merely to press on the widened end 15 of the handle member 12'. In opening the closure plate, the downward pressure on the member 12 compresses the spring 20 and frees the member from engagement with the rib 2 with a resultant elimination of frictionalengagement therewith during the movement or the closure plate to a new position.
This construction of register is simple,
consisting of four arts only, three of which are made from sheet metal and stamped and formed readily with dies. The spring is likewise easily produced. The assembly is simple, the only parts requiring any changing in assembling being the tangs 7 which are bent aroundthe bead 10 of the closure plate. All of the other assembling operations consist of merely placin-g the parts to gether. The register made is light, yet strong and durable in service. The appended claims define the invention and I consider myself entitled to all .forms of structure falling within their scope.

In combination, a relatively fixed plate having an open grating formed therein and provided a short distance below its upper edge and at the upper portion of the grating with a horizontal, rib having a, longitudinal recess in itsrear slde, a closure plate formed at its upper e'dge'with a bead for seatingin said recess, means for securing the beadjin said recess, an operating handle member attached at its lower end. to the closure member at a point below the rib and extending upwardly through the grating in front of the rib, a tongue extending rearwardly from the operating member through the closure member, and spring means-disposed between the rear side of the closure member and the end of the tongue for normally drawing said operating member toward the closure member and holding the operating member in contact with said rib,- substantially as described. r I

In combination, a relatively fixed plate formed with an open grating and provided a short distance below its upper edge atv the upper portion of the'grating with a forwardly projecting horizontal rib having a longitudinal recess in its rear side, closure plateiornied at its upper edge with abead seating in said recess, means onthe first plate passing through the closure plate and around the bead to secure the same hinged-1y together, an operating member attached at its lower end to the closure plate and extendfront of the rib, and spring means opera- .ing upwardly through the grate and in tively connected to the closure plate and op- V eratin'g member for normally holding the operating member against the rib, substantially as described. a

5. In combination,- asheet metal plateformed with an open grating at short distances inward from its edges, a'sheet metal contact with the first plate at the upper portion of the grating.

A structure containing the elements defined in combination in claim 5, in which said operating handle is widened at its upper portion thereby making shoulders at the lower part of said widened portion, and sections on the grating adapted to act as stops against which said shoulders engage when the closure plate is turned rearwardly to a predetermined position.
7. In combination, a sheet metal plate formed with an open grating set in short distances from its edges, a sheet metal closure plate hingedly connected at its upper edge to the rear side of the first plate at the upper side of the grating, a sheet metal operating handle formed with spaced apart projections at its lower end extending through openings in the closure plate, said handle extending upwardly through the grating, a tongue struck rearwardly from the handle a short distance below the hinged connection of the closure plate to the first plate and passing through an opening in the closure plate, said tongue at its free end being bent at right angles to its main portion, and a leaf spring disposed between said bent end of the tongue and the rear side of'the closure plate, substantially as described.
8. In combination, a sheet metal plate formed with an open grating set in short distances from its edges, and being provided at the upper part of the grating with a horizontal rib having a longitudinal recess in its rear side, a sheet metal closure plate formed at its upper edge with a rolled bead seating in said recess, tangs integral with the rib passing rearwardly through the closure plate and bent upwardly around the bead thereof, a sheet metal operating handle formed with spaced apart projections at its lower end extending through openings in the closure plate, said handle extending upwardly through the grating, a tongue struck rearwardly from the handle a short distance I below the connection of the closure plate to the first plate and passing through an opening in the closure plate, a leaf spring located against the rear side of the closure plate, said tongue passing therethrough, and means at the end of the tongue for holding the spring against the closure plate, substantially as described.
