Be it known that I, JOHN J. FERnALL,-a
Y citizen of the United States, residing in Ridgewood, county of Bergen, and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Containers, of which the following is a specication.
My invention relates to containers and particularly to boxes having glass or other transparent panes therein for the display of articles contained in the box such as crackers or other food products.
The chief object of my invention is to provide a structure in which a pane of glass or the like may be removably mounted in position to cover an opening in a display container in such manner 'that thesame may be readily removed forv the purpose of cleaning and the like, readily replaced and securely held when in position. Otherl objects of my invention consist in the details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter more fully set forth in the specification and the accompanying claims.`
In accordance with my invention the front of the box is provided with a window opening and with a horizontal cross piece spaced inwardly from the inner surface of the front above the opening. Short lugs are provided at the bottom spaced inwardly from the front, and the transparent .pane vmay be inserted in position between the front of the box and the cross piece and lugs referred to.

The movable abutment referred to is preferably carried by a fiat spring which is se-i cured on the inner face of the cross piece and is pressed thereby' into position above` the pane. Preferably a slidable member is provided to co-act with the spring and the-cross piece, this member being' movable to withdraw the abutment from operative position and to hold the same out of the path of the pane.
In order that a clearer understanding of my invention may be had attention is hereby directed to the accompanying drawings forming part of this application and illustrating one embodiment of my invention. In.

The upper opening is intended to is intended for the displayl of thel goods and 1s covered by a pane 10 'of glass'or other suitable transparentmaterial.
The opening 5 may, of course, be formed in anyof the sides or surfaces of the box and I will refer, in the claims,1 to this opening as being' formed'in a side'member, which should be understood as covering any one of the sides or surfaces of the'box.
A cross piece 11 is provided above the opening 5 on .thel inner face of the front member 1, this cross member preferably'extending all the way across the front. Cross piece 11 is spaced somewhat inwardly lfrom the front 1I and preferably has a horizontal top flange 12 extending into contact with and secured to front 1. i This cross piece 11 may be soldered or otherwise suitably secured atits ends to the sides 3, 3 of the box and the forward edge of the horizontal flange 12 may similarly be secured to the front 1 of the box.
A pair of short upwardly extending lugs 13, 13 are soldered vor otherwise suitably secured to the bottom 2 of the box, inwardly from the front and in approximatel vertical alinement with the vertically positioned cross piece V11.
The top abutment for the pane pref- Verably takes the form of a horizontal lug 14 which is secured to or integral with the lower edge of a fiat spring strip 15. The'y Ylatter is secured at one end, as shown at 16,
' the end of the spring may be soldered to the cross piece 11.V -Y Y The abutment or lug 14 is adapted to move in a short horizontal slot 17 which extends through the cross piece 11. The lug or abutment 14 is preferably provided with an upturned flange 18 at itsforward edge, to prevent the entire withdrawal of lug 14 fromthe slot in which the same'is mounted. The free end 19 of flat spring 15 may be bent inwardly somewhat so that the same 'may readily be grasped to move the spring inwardly of the boX. The spring pressure of member'15 tends to cause the memberk to lie flat against the inner face of cross piece 11l with the lug or abutment 14 positioned above the top edge of pane 10.
' With the construction described a pane may be mounted in position Vby holding spring 15 in its inward position, sliding the upper edge of the pane. inwardly between front 1 and cross piece 11 until the lower edge of the pane is above the tops of lugs 13 whereupon the pane is dropped into position with its lower edge between the bottomrportion of front 1 and the lugs 13. TheV pane is now heldin position by the lug 14 which is in `position to prevent upward movement of the pane. Whenthe pane is to be withdrawn the spring and lug 14 areV again moved inwardly Vof the box and the pane raised sufficiently to permit its lower edge to clear the tops of lugs 13, the hori- Zonta-l flange y12 being a sufiicient ldistance above the top. of the pane to permit this movement.
As a further improvement, I prefer to provide a device for moving the spring inwardly and holding the same in its inward or inoperative position. This preferably takes the form of a sliding member which will Vcoact with the spring and the surface of the cross piece 11 to wedge or cam the spring inwardly.
VIn the form of my invention illustrated this sliding membertakes the form of a small sleeve 20 slidingly mounted on spring f 15. This member has a forwardly directed flange 21 which normally extends through a short horizontal slot 22 in cross piece 11.
. Flange 271 is Vprovided with a curved or cam shaped surface 23.` When it is desired to withdraw abutment 14 from its operative position the sleeve or rider 20 ismoved to the'left, referring to Figs. v2, 3 and '4, by the finger of the user whereupon the surface 23 ,of flange 21 will ride up out of its slot and engage the surface of cross piece 11 in horizontal alinement vtherewith as is shown in 'Fig 4. Spring 15 'and abutment 14 will then be held Aininoperative position until sleeve 2O is again moved to the right toi cause flange 21' to drop into slot 22. The vertical inner edges of the sleeve 20 may be flanged inwardly or beaded as is shown at 24, to form surfaces which may readily be grasped by the hand of the user. Y
It should be understood that my invention is not limited to the details of construction described but is asA broad as is indicated bythe accompanying claims.
I IVhat I claim is:
1. In a container, the combination of a side member having an opening thereinwith a cross piece above the opening'having a horizontal slot therethrough, and spaced inwardly from said sideV member, a seating surface below said opening with lugs spaced inwardly from said side member, said cross inner surface of a transparent pane mounted between the same and said side member, a top Vabutment movable through said slot zinto and out of position to prevent upward movement of the pane, said abutment Vhaving a flange thereon to prevent entire withdrawal thereof from thev slot, spring means pressing said abutment through said slot into operative position, andmanually operable means movable into position to move said abutment out of operative position, and holding the same in such position. In a container, the combination of a side member having an opening therein with a cross Vpiece above the opening, having a horizontal slot therethrough,and spaced in.- wardly from said side member, a seating surface below said opening with lugs spaced inwardly from said side member, said cross piece and lugs being adapted to engage the inner surface of a transparent pane mounted between the same and said side member, a top abutment movable through said slot into and out of position to prevent upward movement of the pane, a flat spring secured atV wardly from said side member, a seating surface below said opening with lugs spaced inwardly from said side member, said cross piece and lugs being adapted to engage the innerl surface of a transparent pane mounted between the same and said side member, a top abutment movably' mounted adjacent to said cross piece, a flat spring secured on said cross piece, carrying said abutment, and tending to press the same into position to prevent upward movement of the pane,

In a container, the combination of a side member having an opening therein with a cross piece above the'opening having slots therethrough, lugs adjacent the lower edge y of the opening, said cross piece and lugs being spaced inwardly v:from said side member and adapted to engage the inner surface of a transparent pane mounted between the same and said side member, a top abutment movable through one of said slots into and out of position to prevent upward. movement of the pane, a iat spring carrying said abutment and pressing the same into operative position, and a cam member slidably mount-v ed on saidspring, normally positioned in a second one of said slots and movable therefrom into contact with the inner surface of said cross piece, to lmove said abutment out of operative position.
