'ieeaeaa Application filed May Ei, 1919.` Serial No. 295,100.
.and has for its object to provide a construe tion in which the heel and the sole are detachable from the main sole of the shoe and are hele in place byva common fastening means so situatedr that it does not interfere with the use of the shoe when using the arch of the shoe as a support, as for instance in climbing ladders. Another object of the invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive means for connecting the detachable heel and the detachable sole together to hold them upon the shoe. Another object of the invention is to provide, in a shoe having a metallic main sole with an upstanding flange, a connection between the flange and a detachable heel which will permit the side faces of the heel to lie Hush with the up standing flange on the main sole.
1n order to attain these and other ends the invention consists of certain parts and coinbinations of parts, all of which will be hereinafter described, the novel features being pointed out in the appended claims.
ln the drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a shoe embodying the present invention;
Fig. 2 is a top view of the upper faces of the detachable heel and the `detachable sole;
F ig. 3 is a view showing the detachable heel and the detachable sole in section applied to the main sole which is shown in side elevation; and
Fi 4 is a transverse vertical section through the heel portion of the shoe.
Referring more particularly to the draw-V ings, 1 indicates the upper which is secured at 2 at its lower edge to the upper edge of an upstanding flange 3 of a main sole l made of sheet metal. The manner of securing the upper to the main sole may be the saine as that Vshown in my Patent No. 1,205,579 granted November 21, 1916.
The main sole is provided at its front and its rear with guides for a detachable sole 5 and a detachable heel 6. The guide for the detachable sole which is situated at the toel of the main sole is in this instance portion by bending the flange 3 to provide a formed guide rib 7 with which the inwardly turned flange 8 on the sole 5 cooperates in y.such a manner that the detachable sole cannot be removed from the main sole exceptv by a forward movementV of the detachable sole relatively to the Iinain sole. |The guide for the specification of Leners raient.' Pantd Bec. 13, 1921 detachable heel 6 is preferably formed by l bending the flange 3 to provide a groove 8a, that portion of the flange above the groove being proJected beyond that portion of the flange below thevgroove. The heel 6 has a plate 9 secured to the upper surface thereof. and this plate has an'upwardly extending flange 10.with an inwardlyA projecting por-A tionull received'within the groove 8. By forming the groove in the llange and projecting that portion of the flange above the groove beyond that portion of the flange below the groove the side facesV of the heel will lie flush with the side faces of the flange. rlhe heel may be removed only by moving the latter rearwardly with reference to the main so e l3.
To secure the detachable heel and the detachable sole together by a single fastening Y means which is so situated that it will not interfere with the use ofthe arch of the shoe for the purpose of climbing or supporting the wearer, the detachable sole 5 is provided with a portion 12 which extends rearwardly from the vdetachable sole over the arch of the main sole to the `heel 6. The heel 6 is preferably provided with a recess 13 and in this recess a sleeve 14 on the rear end of the extension 12 is arranged. This recess 13 may also contain two sleeves 15 formed at the forward edge of the heel plate 9 and -lying in alinement with the sleeve '14. l
tening device which is so situated that it does not interfere with the use of the arch of the shoe for supporting the wearer. This fastening means between the detachable heel and detachable sole is of simple yconstruction and is housed by a recess in the heel. The heel is connected to the main sole by a tongue and groove connection which permits the outer faces of theheel to lie Vflush with the outer faces of an upstanding flange on the main sole.
YWhat IV claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. Footwear comprising an'upper, a main sole formed with guides at its toe and heel portions, a detachable sole having a plate formed to engage the toe guides and having a rearward extension formed with a sleeve, a detachable heel having a top plate bent to provide guides engaging the heel guides of the main sole and having a sleeve at its forward edge, the breast of the heel below the top plate Yhaving a recess in which the 'sleeves of thedetachable heel and the detachable sole are received, and means fitting in said sleeves for securing the h eel and detachable sole to the main sole. l
2; Footwear comprising an upper, a main sole formed Vwith guides at its -toe and heel formed to engage the guides and having a rearward extension, a detachable heel havportions, a detachable sole having a plate ing a top plate bent to provide guides for engaging the heel guides of the main sole, the breast of the heel below the top plate having a recess, and means for detachably uniting the top plate to the sole plate received within said recess in the breast of the heel.
3. Footwear comprising an upper, a sole made of metal and formed with an upwardly extending flange, the flange being pressed inwardly around one end to provide a groove, the wall of the flange above the groove projecting beyond the wall of Vthe flange below the groove,rand a detachable part having an upwardly projecting flange with an inwardly turned portion received within the groove, the thickness of the flange on the detachable part being substantially equal to the amount'the wall of the flange of the main sole above the groove projects beyond the lower wall of the groove so that the flange of the detachable vpart will lie flush with the sole flange.
