Be it lrnownthatl, FRANZ Tranne, manufacturer, citizen of the Duchy of Brunswick, Empire of Germany, residing at Brunswick, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements 1n Paper- Strip Feeds for Acldliig-lt/lachines, of which thefollowingI is a specication.
The present invention,generally` relates to addingmachines, and more particularly to an adding machine of the type in which numbers and items are set up by means of `keys and transmitted into the accumulating Vmechanism through operation of a main actuating member. ln machines of this character it is usual to provide a printing mechanism in conjunction with the settingup mechanism and the accumulator, for causing the numbers and items set up to be listed cna continuous strip of paper, the transmission of the numbers and items to be printed into theprinting mechanism vand in, its object beingd to provide means in conjunction with the above mentioned feeding means, whereby the platen can be caused to automatically advancefor the distance of two listing` lines atv each oscilla-tion of the platen. lt is a further object of my invention to provide means whereby both strokes of one operative oscillation of the platen are simply utilizedfor causing1 an advance of the revoluble platen, the specific arrangement being such that the platen isturned or fed the distance of one listing line at the first strolre and the "distance of another listing line at the return stroke. A. further object of my invention is to provide means whereby the improved feeding means for turning the platen double the `amount of skilled in the art to which this invention appertains, may be made without involving a departure from the scope of the invention.

Since for my present invention the particular construction of the .setting-up mechanismfas well as the accumulator may be of` any` approved type l have refrained from illustrating-r; such mechanism, although l prefer to apply my invention in connection with mechanisms such as ll have specifically described and illustrated, for instance, in
my copendinpn application Ser. No. 1 17 ,791.
Referring to Fig. l, 6 is a circular printingtype carrier supported on a transverse shaft 7 and provided upon a portion of its periphery with gear teeth 23 meshing with the toothed sector 22 which is carried by a gear wheel 2l and in operative connection with the main actuatingr member. he circular type carrier 6 is provided with lined printing types 8 and a slidably mounted zero type 8". lil/*hen the type carrier 6 is being; revolved a pivotally mounted arm 4-5 is caused by a cam member lll to swing downward thereby sliding` the aero type 8 ntooperative position, the same being normally `held withdrawn in a position in which no print of the zero character can be produced. On level with the printing line, the platen l` is mounted on a transverse rod 2 which is carried in a frame 3 comprising two arms of which but one only is visible in Fig. l. The frame 3 is oscillatingly mounted on pivots t and has a lateral entension 30, see Fig. 2, the end of which is provided with a pin 31 engaging a cam groove 32 in the face of a disk 33. The cam disk 33 is mounted on the shaft 7 mentioned above as supporting the printing type carriers 6 of which the machine contains one foreach denominational order. The cam disk 33 is adapted to be vrevolved by means of the gear wheels 52 and 51 which are 0peratively connectedl with the main actuating member of the machine and are thereby actuated prior to the conclusion of the movement of the main actuating member. The cam groove 32 is of such a shape that during a part of the revolution of the cam disk 33 the platen carrying frame 3 has imparted to it a short `swinging movement toward the type carriers 6 whereby those of the printing type which have previously been moved intoprinting line are caused to be printed on continuous stripof paper 5 which is drawn from aY roll 25 revolubly supported in a partly open bearing 26 formed at the `upper-'endv of each arm of the frame 3. The paper on being drawn from the roll 25, is first passed downwardly around a portion ofthe circumference of the platen 1 and then led upwardly between a pair of guide rolls` 27, 27 and then outof the machine through an opening'28 in the machine easing.. Between Vthe continuous strip ofv paper 5 and the printingl types there is provided in the printing line an inking ribbon 29 which may be fed transversely through the machine by any approved mechanism known in the art. The platen 1 is vprovided with a gear wheel 16 which. meshes with another gear wheel15. The latter wheel is mounted onra pivot, 14 on the frame 3 and is lixedly connected with a ratchet wheel 10. Within the, oscillatory path of the ratchet wheel 10 therel is provided a feeding pawl 11 pivotally supported on a stationary Vpin 12 and subjected to the action of a spring 13) which tendsl to yieldingly hold the tooth 9 of the pawl 11 within the oscillatory path of the vratchet wheel 10. Y consequence, the listing strip 5 is advanced for thefdistance of one listingi line. This is the normal. operation ofthe carrying mechanism for the platenso far described. Now, according toA my invention there is provided a second feeding pawl 17 pivotally mounted on a! stationary pin 19 and having a tooth 18`which projects into the oscillatory path of the ratchet wheel 10. The spring 2O corresponds in its function to the spring 13 of the oppositely disposed feeding pawl 11. The feeding pawl 17 acts similarly to the pawl 11 except that the same is operative at that stroke of the oscillatory frame 3 at which the pawl 11 is inoperative, viz. at the rearwardly directed swinging movement of the platen frame 3. The tooth 18 is shown in Fig. 1 to be in positionto engage the ratchet wheel 10 when the same swings rearwardly with the frame 3 whereby the ratchet wheel is advanced one step in the same direction in which the opposite pawl 11 will turn it when the frame 3 performs the reversed oscillatory stroke. Thus, at each complete oscillation of the frame 3 the ratchet wheel 10 is advanced for the distance of two teeth causing the listing strip to also advance a distance corresponding to the distance of two listing lines.
Provision is made to render the feeding park 17 inoperative when it is desired to turn or feed the platen the normal distance resulting in advancing the paper strip for the amountv of one listing line- For that purpose the said pawl is shown to be extended so as to project through the machine casing and is provided with a handle 17 by means of which it may be raised so as to move its tooth 1S ou-t of the oscillatory path of the ratchet wheel 10.. To secure the pawl 17 in each of its twov positions there is provided a yielding locking pin which is adapted to engage notches in a laterally extending arm 34 of the said pawl 17 and is yieldingly held engaged therewith by a spring 36. The two notches of the arm 34 correspond. to the two positions of the pawl 17 in which the same is either operative or inoperative..

operating means for said frame; and mechanism controlled by the oscillation of said f frame for feeding said platen, comprising a ratchet wheel geared to said platen, and a pair of'oppositelyfarrangefd pawls coper- `ative therewith, one pawl adapted to engage and rotate said ratchet wheel during one strokeY of theframe, and theother pawl adaptedto engage and rotate said ratchet wheel in the 'same direction during the return stroke of vsaidV frame.

In a paper strip feeding.mechanismY for addingrmachines, the combination, with a revoluble platen around which the strip isarijanged to pass;V of an oscillatory frame; operating means for said frame; mechanism vcontrolled by the oscillation of said frame for feeding said platen, comprisinga ratchet wheel geared to said platen, and a pair of oppositely-arranged pawls coperative therewith', one pawl adaptedto engageV and Vrotate said ratchet wheel during one stroke of the fraine,'and the other pawl adapted to engage and rotate said ratchet wheel in thev same directionV duringv the return stroke of said frame; and means for',v throwing one lof said pawls out of action, whereby said ratchet wheel will be rotated during one 'stroke only of the frame.

A paper strip feeding mechanism for adding machines,pcomprising, in combina tion, a revoluble 'platen around which the strip is arranged to pass; an oscillatory frame 'wherein said platen is mounted; operating means for said frame; a ratchet wheel carried 'by said frame and geared to said platen; -a pair of oppositely-acting pawls engageable with said ratchet wheel and arranged to rotate the same solely in one direction, one pa'wl 'active during one stroke of the frame, and lthe other pawl during the returnstroke thereof, whereby said ratchet wheel and said platen will be fed two steps at each complete loscillation of the frame; and means vfor throwing one of said pawls out of action.

In a paper strip feeding mechanism for adding machines, the combination, with a r'evolu'ble platen around which the strip is arranged to pass; of an `oscillatory frame; operating means for said frame; and mechanism controlled by the oscillation of said frame for feeding said platen, comprising an intermittent motion member, and a pair of loppoSitely--arranged actuating members therefor, 'one adapted to aetuate said intermittent motion memberV during one stroke of the frame, and the other adapted to actuate said intermittent motion member in the same direction during the v'returi'i stroke of the fra-nie.'

In a papervstrip feeding mechanism for adding machines, the combination, with a revoluble platen around which the strip is arranged to pass; of an oscillatory frame; operating means lfor Said frame; mechanism controlled by the oscillation of said frame for feeding said platen, comprising an intermittent motion member and a air of op )ositely-arranged 'actuating mem ers there or, one adapted to actnate said intermittent inotion member during one stroke of the frame, and the other adapted to actuate said inter- Vmittent motion member in the same direction during the return stroke of the frame; and means for throwing 'one of said actuating members o'iit of action.
