LUCIUS FREEMAN LITTLE, OF OWENSBORO, KENTUCKY.
APPARATUS FOR lvIAKING- FLOUR AND MEAL.
' Application filed May 14,
To (all 207mm it may concern:
Be itknown that I, LUOIUS FREEMAN Lrrrnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Owensboro, in the county of Daviess and State of Kentucky, have invented new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Making Flour and Meal, of which the following is a specification.
The hereinafter described invention relates to apparatus for making flour and meal and is of that type of milling apparatus in which the break and reduction rolls by which the grain is reduced, and the centrifugal oressing devices, are placed in close proximity to one another for short process milling, as distinguished from the long milling methods of some types of mills, the mill to which my improvements relate being exemplified, so far as its general characteristics are concerned, by the Tattersall mill illustrated in Patent No. 1,037,805, dated September 3, 1912.
\Vhile the present mill of my invention is of this general type, it differs substantially therefrom, in that routing and handling of the stock is varied and shortened in a most desirable way, and the instrumentalities for bringing about this shortening and different routing are so combined. as to eliminate too frequent handling of the material under process of reduction, which is always desired so as to eliminate the breaking up of the bran and making bran attrition dust, which breaking up and making of attrition dust occurs in some mills of this type now in use more or less as flour comes in contact with the outside coating of the bran, and is detrimental to the quality of the flour produced as this is the source of low grade flour, and as the outside coating of the bran contains a coloring matter it is desirable to prevent flour and bran being sifted together or in any way come in contact with one another and this I do to the minimum extent.
The breaking up of the bran particles and making bran attrition dust inevitably results from too frequent and continued handling of the stock after the grain has been initially broken and the separation of the flour and middlings from the offal begins, the repeated passing ofthe stock through the centrifugals and conveyers breaking up the bran into microscopic particles and making bran attrition dust,. which cannot then be successfully dressed out, which remain Specification of Letters Patent.

in the flour, and reduce, to that extent, its
high quality, or as is practised in most mills, the separation of the flour lnto two or more grades.
I accomplish the result aimed at by so disposing the breaking rolls relative to each other, and to the dressing instrumentalities and the reduction rolls which act finally on the stock, as to reduce the handling of thestock to minimum lengths of time and travel through the mill, reducing the interval of contact betweenfiour and bran stock, without in any way affecting the thoroughness of reducing and separating, and thereby improving the quality of the flour produced.
In order that the invention may be understood by those skilled in the art, I have shown in the accompanying drawings one embodiment of my invention and in said drawings Figure 1 is a View in side elevation, parts of the structure being shown in section,- of a mill embodying my invention,
Fig. 2 is a transverse Vertical sectional view through the break roll section of the mill,
Fig; 3' is a transverse vertical section through the dressing or centrifugal section of the mill,
Fig. & is a sectional view similar to Fig. 2, showing a different routing of stock from that disclosed in Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings by numerals, like numbers indicating like parts in the several views, 10 indicates the break roll section of the mill casing, and 11 indicates the dresser section of the mill casing, which mill casing may be of any suitable design and construction. The break roll section 10 is provided at its top with any suitable hopper and grain feeding mechanism 12, into which the grain is poured and by which it is fed in a suitably regulated flow to the milling instrumentalities.
Mounted within the mill section 10 in position to receive the grain flow from the hopper 12, are the first break rolls 13, which i but preventing the larger grain particles from )a'ssing, which larger grain particles move town the inclined surface of thescreen 15 and, by a suitable feed board 17, pass to a second pair of break rolls 18. The second screen 16, which is inclined, receives the fine middlings and the flour, separates the flour and fine middlings by passing the flour. through, and directs the 'middlings down its inclined surface to a feed l)O11'Cl, 19"Wl11Cll delivers to the'feed box 20 of the first pair of reduction rollse21, it being understood that any suitable means for agitatingthe scalper sieve to promote the how of the stock thereon and its effective sieving is provided. The flour and fine middlings which pass the second screen 16 will be directed by a suitable feed board 22 to a conveyer 23 deliveringfto a centrifugal dresser 24 in the dresser section 11 of the mill where the flour will be dressed out in the manner customary in centrifugal dressers, the dressed out flour being delivered to an suitable fall boards or slides which direct it to a conveyor 25 at the bottom of the mill casing by which it is delivered ready for seeking. a
The stock which passes from the first screen 15 of the scalping sieve is, as stated, directed to the second pair of break rolls l8, and is further broken by said rolls, the stock coming from the said, second pair of break rolls being delivered to. a second'scalping sieve 26 of a double screen construction similar to the scalping sieve 14 already described. The coarse bran particles are-retained on the coarse screen section 27 of the scalping sieve 26 and, flowing downits inclined surface to a suitable feed board 28, are delivered to anysuitable delivery point or if it is desired to separate the small amount of flour adhering to the bran particles, the bran may be tailed into a conveyer 31 by'which it is delivered to a bran receiving reel or duster 80 in the dressing section of the mill in which cluster the flour is removed from the bran and falls to the conveyer 25 at the bottom of the dresser section, the bran being tailed out to any'suitable point of delivery. Asan alternative a single-screen scalping sieve may be used at the second pair of break-rolls 18 and the throughs, consisting in part of flour and middling, be delivered to the Vconveyer 23 and thence to the centrifugal 24 where it will be dressed, together with the throughs coming from the scalper of the first pair of breaking rolls, the tails of the coarse screen 27going either to the bran scalper reel 30 orby properly arranged fall boards, not shown, maybe sent to, 45, the conveyen carrying stock into the second reduction reel 46. The flour and small middlings from the feed board 22 pass through the two screens 27 and 29 into conveyor 23which carries them into the centrifugal dresser 24 in the dressing section 11 of the mill. Preferably this centrifugal dresser 24 will be of large capacity, since, as will be observed, it receives the stock to be dressed from both the first and second pairs of break rolls. The over tails of the fine screen 29 of scalper 26 flow downthe. trough 29*" to the hopper 20 of the first reduction rolls.
From the foregoing it will be seen that the stock coming from the first and second pairs of break-rolls is subjected to but one dressing action in the centrifugal dresser 24, thus eliminating the dilficulties heretofore experienced with mills in which all of the stock is break-rolls,an'd again after the action of the r second pair of break rolls. This eliminates objectionable attrition of the bran particles adhering to the middlings and theretention of those particles and dust in the flour, and furthermore has the advantage of simplifying the construction, reducing initial cost of production and cost of maintenance, and shortening the routing of thestock through the mill. The particles of stock too large for flour, or in other words, small middlings, in the centrifugal 24 are tailed outat the tail of reel 24 intova trough24 which may be slightly vibrated in order to'make the middlings flow, said middlings running diagonallyacross rear ofreel section and dropping into the end of the. conveyor 24 under the bran dust-er 31 which takes the middlings from reel 24 and from the bran duster reel back to the hopper 20 of the first reduction rolls. The broad bran tails out to the ofi'al bin from bran duster reel 30.
From the reduction rolls 21 the stock falls to a conveyor 36 byv which it is delivered to acent-rifugal dresser 37 of usual construction where the flour is dressed through. The offal is tailed off to any suitablepoint of delivery, while the middlings which pass through the scalper section 38 are taken by a suitable conveyer 40 and delivered to an elevator 41 to chute 42 which delivers themto feed box 43 of a second pair of reduction rolls 44. The material which passes the second pair of re duction rolls is in finally reduced forni and falls to a conveyer 45 which carries it to a dresser 46 of the usual construction in the dressing section 11 of the mill, where the flour is dressed through, and thelrest of the 81%)?! delivered from the final dresser 46 as o a In the development shown iii-Fig. 4 the in connection with Fig. 1 to a bran duster, I
dispense with that bran duster shown. In the construction shown in F ig. 4 the overtails from the screen scalpersieve 27 pass by a fall board 47- directly from the scalper screen 27 to a fall board 48 delivering directly to the conveyer 45 of the reel 46 for the second reduction rolls 44. By this rout ing the stock passes directly to the reel 46 instead of going through the bran duster as in the form shown in Fig. 2. s
The overtails of the finescalper-sieve 29 of the second break-rolls will, as before, pass to the hopper 20 of the first reduction rolls by means of a fall board 49 arranged as shown so as to pass the fall board 47 and deliver to the hopper 20.
With this arrangement the flour will be dressed out of the stock directly by the reel 40- without the interpositioning of the bran reel as shown in Fig. 2. V i
The driving mechanism for the break rolls, reduction rolls, and centrifugal dressers may be of any suitable or desired construction. I do not describe or illustrate such driving mechanism in detail as it is well known and may be of various types, it being essential only that it be of such character and so disposed as to. give the necessary directions of rotation to the reducing and dressing instrumentalitics described.
It is obvious that in physical embodiments of my invention I mayuse any suitable or known types of rolls, roll adjusters, conveyers, and cent-rifugals, all of which are conventionally shown, and I do not, therefore, confine myself to any specific type.
I claim:
