Abstract

215,521. Arpin, J. B. March 26, 1923. Stationary-vessel wet-separating apparatus; washing-apparatus with screens.-A method of, and apparatus for, classifying materials consists in discharging the materials by means of a conveyer into a rotating sieve having different sizes of meshes, materials of a certain size being fed thence to a wet-separating apparatus. A conveyer 10, Fig. 1, feeds the material into a sieve 21 having different meshes, the finest being at the upper end. The finer grades of material pass through a removable funnel 25 to a shoot 26, whence a conveyer 29 delivers them to a spout 30. The coarsest material is delivered to a shoot 31 for re-grinding. The intermediate material passes through the coarse meshes to a hopper 32 provided with a stirring mechanism 34 for breaking up lumps and regulating delivery. The tank 33, Figs. 2 and 3, has an adjustable dividing board 35 of the contour shown. A conduit 42 is divided by a partition 45 having an adjustable vane 48 whereby the stream of water on either side of the partition and dividing board 35 may be regulated. A series of adjustable separating screens 60 - - 63 is provided, to each of which is attached a discharge shoot 100 - - 103 for discharging the materials separately. A series of posts 115 is mounted on the screen 63 to secure uniform change in the rate of flow of water. For varying the position of the screens 60 - - 63, two hand-wheels 94, interconnected by chains 90, are provided for each screen, so that rotation of either will, by means of the chains, raise each side of the screen uniformly. In operation, the flow of water due to the propeller 50<1> carries the materials from the board 35 on to the screens 60 - - 63, the lighter going to the screen 60 and the heavier to screen 63, from which they are washed to their respective discharge shoots. Materials escaping the screen 63 are caught in gratings 109<1>, 110<1>, whilst the heaviest material descends to a settling well, whence it is removed bv a screw conveyer 55 and conveyer 29 to a discharge shoot 30.
