PATENT O FFICE.
WILLIAM HENRY 'WINSLETT, OF NIXON, TEXAS.
WINDMILL'.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 6, 1921 Application filed October 19, 1920. Serial No. 417,908.
To all 20/ 20772 it may concern:
Be it known that I, VVILLTAM H. VVINsLnTT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Nixon, in the county of Gonzales and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Windmills; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a wind mill, and the object is to provide means for resiliently connecting or mounting a pump rod and pitman for transmitting movement from the crank shaft carrying the wheel, in order that the elements may be properly balanced, and wear due to unevenly distributed weight or pull may be to a great extent eliminated.
A further object is to provide particular means for connectin the pump rods with a stationary elementmounted on the supporting structure, whereby the aforesaid results are secured.
A still further object is toprovide, in connection with a transverse element adjustably connected with a pump rod, a plurality of coiled springs connected with the adjustable element and with stationary elements mounted on the supporting structure, the springs serving to compensate for the uneven action due to the variable pull on the pitman and pump rod.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of elements hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a view in side elevation.
Fig. 2 is aview in vertical section, the lower portion of the supporting structure being omitted.
Figs. 3 and 4 are detail views showing the arrangement of the springs and the devices by means of which they are connected respectively with the pump rod and the supporting structure.
The main frame, or supporting structure, is designated 10, the upwardly extended corner elements or legs are shown at 11, 12, 13 and 14, being connected by lower horizontal braces 15 and intermediate horizontal braces 16 and diagonal braces 17.
The wind wheel per 36 is designated 20, being mounted on crank shaft 21 journaled in the forked ends 22 and 23 of a supporting frame 24. The latter is firmly supported in a member 25 which constitutes a connecting element between the frame 24 and the supporting structure.
pitman 27 connects the crank shaft with the pump rod 28, and the latter is provided with a transverse element 30 adjust-ably spider and the adjustable transverse element 30, are a plurality of coiled springs 35. In the present instance I have shown four of the springs, the springs being of suitable size and tension being adjusted in an obvious manner.
In practical use, this device is found to add greatly to the efiiciency of the apparatus, and make it possible to use a wheel of relatively small diameter compared with the work to be performed. It is obvious that modifications in construction may be made within the scope of the appended claims, and that the use of the resiliently mounted rod and pitman is not limited to a windmill and pump, the attachment being equally serviceable in other connections.
The wind mill shown in the drawings is merely used for the purpose of illustrating the application of the invention, as obviously the invention may be used in connection with any construction of wind mill adapted to Cimpart a reciprocating motion to the pump r0 What is claimed is 1. A balance device comprising a rectangular web, means for securing said web at its corners to a support, tension springs secured to said means adjacent the corners of the web, and means connecting the springs to a reciprocating element.
2. A balance device comprising a rectangular web, extensions formed on the corners of said web and angularly related and secured to a support, tension springs secured to said extensions adjacent the corners of the web, and an attaching member secured to the springs and to a reciprocating element.
3. A balance device comprising a web, In testimony whereof I afiix my signature means for securing the Web to a, support, in presence of two Witnesses. re atively spaced tension 5; rinn's secured to said means, a pair of clamp ing plates having VILLIAM HENRY WINSLETT 5 angularly related ends secured to the springs, Witnesses:
and means securing the plates together and G. B. PALM, to a reciprocating element. EUGENE WILSON.
