To aZZ whom it may concern: v
Be it known that I, Rocco FAnnIzIo, a citizen of the United States of America, residingat Springfield, Hanipden and State of of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in curtains for protecting car windows and especially street car windows during summer, from rain insuch a manner as to rovide i transparent windows from which the passen ers may take observations.
(H16 of the types of street cars in commen use is a car having window frames adapted to be lowered intoinoperative positions so as to provide relatively large window openings in the sides of the car for open air riding. Should a storm come up the inside curtains are lowered for the purpose of affording a temporary protection to the passengers and of keeping the seats dry. The wind and rain deflects such curtains inwardly and the end portions of the seat are consequently covered with rain so as'to he unfit for use, thus reduc ng the capacity of the car by compelling the passengers to crowd into the center aisle. provides a curtain on the outside of the car which can be rolled into an inoperative position under ahood mounted on the side of the car or on the car roof or contained in a housing built in the car. This curtain is provided with a series of folding or rollable transparent sections through which the passengers may look when the car is at rest' or in motion to make any desired observations. The curtain 1s preferably held at its ends against the side of the car by means of guides so as to prevent flapping and ex clude rain.
With the above and other objects in View this invention relates to certain new and useful combinations, constructions and arrangements of parts, clearly described in the following specification and fully illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure l is a side elevation of a car equipped with my improved curtain, the curtain being shown in its lower position.

On each side of the car a hood 8 metal or other materialis located eithe against the side of the car curtain 10 is a ranged to roll and unroll. The curtain-lO is equipped with a, series of openings which". are covered by transparent sectionsll, which are alined with the openings of the earl- The 75 end portions of the curtain 10 are-prevented from lateral displacement by'ineaiis of guides 12 mounted on the sides ofthe car. In orderto prevent sag of the central, portion of the roll the hood 8 is provided? 3m .with a roller 13, which is supported (mdep'ending arm let-curved under the roll so that the central portion of'said roll ca rest on said rollen. eyelets to hold the curtain downwardly. i
The roller'may be of a spring rotated type so that it will automatically fwind the j curtain when desired. i 1 9 Having described my invention, I claim;
The combination with a passenger car.
consti-ucted to provide an open side, aroller and provided with a series of transparent pivoted horizontally to the side of the car rollable sections and means for holding said above the line of saidopening, a roller fabric downward-1y so that said transparent 19 adapted to engage the under side of Said seotions will cover said opening a 'rollerto prevent the sanie from sagging, a Signed at Springfield, Mass.
