TANK.
Yieaeesa.
Speccatoii of Letters Patent. l Patented Nov. 29, 1921 Application led September 20, 1920. Serial No. 411,393.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES CLOUD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful improvements in Tanks, Vof which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to armored motor cars or tanks and has for an object the provision lof a tank having a revolving turret in which are mountedl machine or rapid re loading guns, so that by revolving the turret the guns may be turned in any direction.
Another object of the invention is the provision of means whereby the turret may be turned through the operation of the tank propelling mechanism, the turret revolving means being thrown into and out of operation as desired.
Another object is the provision of means for mounting guns within the tank proper,
' so that a charged battery of guns may be carried in a manner to protect them from an enemy.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear as the following description is read in connection with the accompanying drawings.
In the drawings :-V
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the invention.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same.
F ig. 3 is a central longitudinal sectional view. Y
Fig. L1 is a horizontal section showing the' driving mechanism.
Fig. 5 is a transverse section on the line 5-5 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 6 is a similar view on the line 6-6 0f Fig. 3.
Referring more in detail to the drawings, like characters of reference denote corresponding parts throughout the several views.
In the drawings the reference character 10 indicates the main tank which is substantially diamond shape in plan and is supported upon a frame 11, which is mounted upon traction wheels 12. These wheels are driven through gearing 13, operated by a motor 14C, such as an internal combustion engine, or of any other suitable character.
Extending downwardly from the main tank 10 is an apron 15 which is of substantally the saine shape as the main taal; 1Q
and provides a double ended ram at its ends 16.
`Extending upwardly from the main tank 10 is a shaft 17 and mounted upon the upper end of this shaft is a turret 18, the latter being of the same shape as the tank.
The lower end of the shaft-17 has secured v thereon one gear 19 which is driven byv a worm 20 mounted upon a shaft 21 having bearings in the frame 11. Also mounted upon the shaft 21 is a sprocket 22, which is driverrwith a chain 23which operates over a sprocket 24. loosely mounted upon a shaft 25 also having bearings 'in the frame 11. The sprocket 24: is adapted to be secured to the shaft25, through the lmedium `of a suitable clutch 26,'so-that when desired, the-sprocket 24C may be locked to its shaft to rotate the turret 18. A clutch 28 is provided for the purpose of disengaging the mechanism which operates'the traction wheels 12, so that the turret may be revolved either during the progress of the tank, or while the latter is a standstill. The turret may be moved in either direction by reversing the operation of the driving mechanism.
The sides of the apron 15 are reinforced at opposite sides by means of braces 29.`
' The tank 10 is providedl near each end and upon opposite sides with a window or port 31, the latter being provided with a sliding closure 32 which operates freely. inside of the tank. Mounted adjacent each of the Windows 31 is a machine gun 33 which may be trained so as to shoot forwardly and laterally at any angle. The tank 10 is further provided upon each side and spaced from the transverse center with doors 34 for the accommodation of the driver, mechanism and runners.
The turret 1S is also provided with doors or windows 35, having closures 36 similar to the windows 31 and like the last mentioned windows have mounted adjacent thereto machine guns 37. The turret is further provided upon each side with a door 38.
The apron 15 has mounted upon each side a shock absorber or bumper 4:0, which prevents injury to the apron through contact with another tank or object.
-The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minor details 0f @On-aimee@ and the right is here;
in reserved to make such changes as properly fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described the invention what is claimed 1s 1. An armored motor oar of the class described comprising 'a wheel supported frame, a vsubstantially diamond shaped metallic shell mounted on Vsaid frame and having a plurality of openings therein, means` for closing said Openings, a metallic apron extendin downwardly from said shell, a shaft journa ed in suitable bearings on said frame and extending upwardly through said shell, means for rotating said shaft, a'substantially diamond shaped turret mounted upon the upper end of said shaft having a plurality of openings therein, means for closing said openings andv means for propelling said car and rotating said shaft.
2. An armored motor car of the class described comprising a wheel supported frame, a substantially'diamond shaped metallic shell mounted on said frame and having a plurality of openings therein, means for closing said openings, a metallic apron extending downwardly from said shell, a
shaft journaled in suitable bearings on said frame and extending upwardly through said shell, means for rotating said shaft, a substantially diamond shaped turret mounted kupon the upper end of said shaft having a plurality of openings therein, means for closing said openings, a bumper mounted on each side of said apron, and means for propelling said ear and rotating said shaft.
3. An armored motor car of the class described comprisin awheel supported frame, a substantially diamond shaped metallic shell mounted on said frame and ,having a plurality of openings therein, means for closing said openings, a ,metallic apron extending downwardly from said shell, braces secured to said apron, a shaft journaled in suitable bearings on said frame and extending upwardl through said shell, means for rotating saidy shaft, a substantially diamond shaped turret mounted upon the upper end of said shaft having a plurality of openings therein, means 'for closing said openings, a bumper mounted on each side of said apron, and means for propelling said car and rotating said shaft.
yIn testimony whereol alix my signature.
