n i a TATFLS WILLIAM B. STEPHENS, OF SUNSET, TEXAS.
' BURGLAR-ALABM.
To aZZ whom it may. concern: v Be it known that 1, WILLIAM B. Srrrrinns, acitizen of the United States, residing at Sunset, in the county of Montague and State of Texas, have invented new and useful 1mprovements in Burglar-Alarms, of which the following is a specification.
This inventionrelates to burglar alarms, and has for an object the provision of a device which may be secured adjacent a window or other opening and set for operation, the act of opening the windowv serving to operate the alarm and explode a cartridge and thereby give notice of the unauthorized opening of the said window.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which is simple in construction and positive in oper ation and which may be easily set for use.
Other objects and advantages of the in vention will appear as the following description is read in connection with the accompanying drawings.
In the drawings:
Figure l is an end elevation of the invention, the view also showing a fragmentary position of the upper end of a lower window sash, the alarm being set so as to be operated by raising the sash.
Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the subject matter ofFig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the same.
Fig. 4 is a sectional view on the line 4. of Fig. 3, with the parts in the position after the operation of the alarm.
Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 8, but
showing the end of the spring plate broken away to more clearly show the pivoted cartridge cover or plate, the said cover or plate being swung to an open or uncovered position in full lines and to a closed or covered position in dotted lines.
Referring to the drawings in detail, like characters of reference denote corresponding parts throughout the several views.
V Theinventi0n as illustrated in the accompanying drawings is shown in connection with a window opening, but it may be also used in connection with a door, the invention being so positioned that the opening of the door will operate the trigger after the man ner of the raising of the lower sash.
In carrying out the invention, there is provided a base 10, which is preferably made of wood of proper size and shape, and which may be secured in any suitable or desired Specification of Izetters Patent. Patented NQV. 29, 1&21.
Application filed September 20, 1919, Serial No. 325,052. i i i manner to the top rail 11 of a window, as shown in the drawings, or as stated may be arranged in a suitable manner on a door casing, so that the opening ofv the door will operate the trigger, as will. be hereinafter apparent. i
The invention further includes a plate 12, which is secured to the base 10, through the medium of screws 13, or similar fastening devices. This plate has its ends bent substantially at right angles, as shown at 14, so that the plate 12 is spaced from the base 10.
One end of the plate 12 is provided with an opening 15 and secured within this opening is one end of a tube or barrel 1 the latter being formed in the end, which is secured to the plate, with a seat 17, for the reception of a cartridge 18.
Pivotally mounted on the plate 12, as indicated at 19, is a pivoted cartridge cover, consisting of a plate 20.. This plate is provided with an opening 21 and with a notch 22, the latter being adapted to take over a stop or screw 28 carried by the plate 12. When the notch 22 is in engagement with the stop or screw 23, the opening 21 will be positioned over the center of the cartridge 18. The free end of the cartridge cover plate 20 is provided with an operating handle 24.
Secured upon the plate 12, as indicated at 25, is one end of a spring plate 26, the
opposite end of this plate carrying a firing 26 to hold the latter spaced-from the plate 12. The other arm 80 of the trigger is positioned over the top rail 11 of the sash, so
that when the latter is raised, the arm 29 will be disengaged from the end of the plate 26, whose spring action will cause the firing pin to strike the cartridge to explode the same. The alarm may be set and. remain in said position without danger of exploding the cartridge, by moving the pivoted cartridge plate 20 to a position where the firing pin will not pass through the opening 21.
' The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction and the 1 right is herein reserved to make such changes as properly fall Within the scope of the appended claim.
Having described the invention, what is claimed is:
A burglar alarm comprising a plate, a tubular member or barrel carried thereby and adapted to receive a cartridge, a pivotally mounted apertured cover plate adapted to be moved over the end of the cart-ridge to hold the latter in position, a stop pin eX- tending upwardly from the first mentioned plate for engagement within a slot provided 15 in the cover plate, whereby the aperture in the latter will be properly positioned over the cartridge, a spring having one end- I secured to the first mentioned plate, a firing pin carried by the opposite end of thespring 20 and adapted to pass through the aperture in the pivoted cover plate for contact with" the cartridge, a trigger engageable With the spring plate and locatedin the'path of a window sash whereby the. latter will operate 25 the trigger to release the firing pin.
' In testimon whereof I afiix my si nature.
