JOHN CLA RY, 0F OAKLAND, CALIFORNIA.
BURNER.
Application filed June 28,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN CLARY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oakland, in the county of Alameda and State of Cillb fornia, have invented new and useful 1m provements in Burners, of which the follow ing is a specification.
This invention relates to burners for burning kerosene and other hydrocarbons, the purpose being to provide a burner whlch Wlll produce an exceedingly hot flame.
Another object is the provision of a burner in which the kerosene is vaporized and mixed with water vapor and ignited which results in a flame having a greater number of heat units than the ordinary blue flame.
Another object is the provision of a burner of simple construction and operation which may be placed within a stove or other convenient position and operated to provide an intense heat for either cooking or heating purposes.
WVith the above and other objects in view the invention further includes the following novel features and details of construction, to be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings V Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a burner embodying the present invention.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. a is a detailed perspective view of the spreader.
Referring in detail to the drawings wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the reference character 10 indicates the body of the burner which is preferably made of cast metal and which includes supporting legs 11 and a water chamber 12. This latter is open at the top, being formed for a depression in the top of the body portion and having an opening 13 within which is positioned a pipe '14. This pipe is connected with a tank 15 or other source of water supply and may be controlled by a valve 16.
Extending from one end of the body portion of the burner is a pipe 17 and this pipe is formed into a coil 18 which is spaced above Specification of Letters Eatent.
Patented Nov. 29, 1921.
1920. Serial No. 392,270.
the center of the burner, the said pipe terminating in a nozzle 19 which is prefercoil so that the fluid passing through the coil and out through the nozzle 19 will be broken up and distributed into the passage through a screen.
Located directly beneath the nozzle and within the water chamber 12 is a spreader 21, the upper face of which is of convex formation. This spreader is removably located within the water chamber and is spaced from the bottom of the chamber by legs 22.
The pipe 17 has connected thereto a supply pipe 23 in which is included a one way valve 24, the pipe 23 being also connected to the supply tank 25 which is adapted to contain kerosene or other hydrocarbon fuel. A valve 26 is also located within the pi e 23 for the purpose of entirely cutting o the supply of fuel to the burner.
In the operation of the burner sufficient water is permitted to flow into the water chamber to a depth of approximately onethird and when the kerosene or other fuel passing through the nozzle 19 has been ignited a sufficient height to properly heat the coil 17, the fuel passing through this coil will be vaporized, the vapor passing through the screen to the spreader 21, by means of which it is divided and mixed with the vapor rising from the water in the water chamber so that an intense heat is produced. By means of the valve 24:, fuel is prevented from burning through the pipe 23 for the danger of fire within the fuel tank 25 is prevented.
The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction and the right is herein reserved to make such changes as properly fall within the scope of the appended claim.
Having described the invention what is claimed is A burner comprising a body portion, an open water chamber included in the body portion, a coil supported above the water chamber, means for supplying a hydrocarbon fluid to the coil, a nozzle communicating with and located centrally of the coil for diwhereby when the burner 'is lighted the hydrocarbon fluid and vwater will be vaporized and mixed to provide a fuel for the burner.
In testimony whereof I aflix 'my signature. JOHN CLARY.
