Description

F. BOFSKY.
PAPER CUTTER.
APPLICATION FILED SEPT,27, 1920.
Patented Nov. 29, 1921.
UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
FRANK J. BOFSKY, OF DETROI T, MICHIGAN.
PAPER-CUTTER;
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed'se ptember 2'7, 1920.'- Serial No. 413,159.
Cutters, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to "the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to paper cutters such as are employed to facilitate the tearing of sheets of wrapping paper from a roll.
It is the object of the invention to provide a paper cutting knife for the purpose described which will be readily adjustable to facilitate grasping the end of the rolled strlp of paper, which end lies beneath the knife after tearing ofl the sheet, and is usually made accessible only by rotation of the roll.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a front view of a rolled paper holder equipped with the herein described improved cutting knife;
Fig. 2 is a sectional view thereof taken upon the line 22 of Fig. 1.
In these views, the reference character 1 designates a roll of paper which is carried by a mandrel 1 engaging the standards 1 at the ends of the base 1. Said standards further carry a rod 2 extending longltudlnally above the roll 1 and forming a pivotal support for a pair of forwardly projeotlng curved arms 2 carrying at their free ends a knife 3 having a beveled edge 4 forbearing longitudinally upon the roll 1. Said knife at its free end has a section 5 normally ahned with the main body of the knife and pivoted thereto. Preferably a lug 6 is formed upon the section 5 and engaged in a slot 7 of the main section 3, a pivot pin 8 being passed through the slotted end of the main sectlon and through said lug. The upper corner of the main section 3, adjacent the section 5, is rounded as indicated at 8 the curvature of the section 3 being such as to limit movement of the section 5 when the same has been swung to the raised position. 9 is a handle member formed uponthe front face of the section 5 to facilitate the upward rocking of said section.
In use of the above described knife when it is desired to tear off a sheet of paper from the roll 1, the section 5 is swung to its raised position, thus exposing the terminal edge 10 of the paper so that said edge may be grasped to advance the sheet to the desired tate of Michigan, have invented cer-- tain new and useful Improvements 1n Paperpoint for tearing. The section 5, when released, drops of its own weight to its normal position in alinement with the section 3, the
vertically abutting shoulders 10 insuring proper alinement; To counteract any tendency of the section 5 to be raised by the paper when a sheet of the same is being torn Patented Nov. 29, 1921.
off against the edge 4, the slot 7 and lug 6 engaging therein are inclined at an acute angle to the vertical, so that the vertically acting stress exerted upon the section 5, as the sheet of paper is being torn off, encoun ters a sufiicient frictional resistance between the lug 6 and upper side of the slot 7 to prevent swinging of said section upon its pivot.
The described device accompanies a saving of time and labor in that it avoids the necesslty of subjecting the roll 1 to an initial rotation to project the free end of the paper from beneath the knife 35 sufiiciently to permit the paper to be grasped.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. A cutting blade for a roll of paper comprising honizontally abutting sections having their adjacent ends pivotally connected, one of which sections is angularly adjustable upon the pivot togive access to the end of the paper engaged beneath the blade, the abutting extremities being rounded in their upper corners to permit the described angular movement, the curvature of one of the corners being such as to limit said movement to an acute angle.
2. A cutting blade for a roll of paper comprlsing two pivotally connected sections normally horizontally alined, one of said sections being angularly adjustable about the pivotal connection to give access to the edge of the paper underlying the blade, the pivotal axis being slightly inclined to the horizontal to resist the swinging of the pivotal section on said axis due to tearing of the paper.
3. Acutting blade for a roll of paper comprising a substantially horizontal stationary section and normally alined adjustable section, one of said sections being slotted and the other provided with a lug engaging said slot, a pivot member engaging said lug within said slot, said lug and slot being inclined to an acute angle to the sides of the blade to resist swinging of the pivotal section in response to a stress exerted upon tearing of the paper against the blade.
4. A cutting blade for a roll of paper comprising two sections normally horizontally alined, one of said sections being pivotally adjustable to-give access to the edge of the paper underlying the blade, the pivotal axis being slightly inclined to the horizontal to resist the swinging of the pivotal sections on said axis due to the tearing of the paper.
5. A cutting blade for a roll of paper comprising a fixed supporting section and a supported section pivotally mounted at one end thereof, means for swinging said sup ported section to an upward position to eX- pose the edge of the roll of paper therebeneath and also cause the return of the same to its normal position and means for maintaining alinement between said sections when in normal position.
16. A cutting blade for a roll of paper comprising a fixed supporting section and a supported section normally in alinement wlth each other, means for swinging the supported section out of alinement to expose the edge of the roll of paper therebeneath and means upon the end of the supporting section for maintaining alinement between the sections.
7. A cutting blade for a roll of paper comprising a supporting section mounted Vertically upon the side of the roll of paper and a supported section similarly mounted upon. one end of the supporting section,
.means for permitting upward movement of FRANK J. BOFSKY.
