MEMORANDUM FILE.

GEORGE H. HOHNSBEEN, 0F MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA, ASSIGNOR OFTI-IREE-AFIFTHS TO J'. BROWN, OF MINNEAPOLIS, I'.IVII[NI\TES'0TALv MEMORANDUM-FILE.
Specification of Letters `Patent.
ezaeneea Nov. 29, 1921'.
Application iiledMarch `27, 1920. Seriali Ivo/369,172.
of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Memorandum- Files, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a plate adapted for mounting an ordinary paper clip of well-known construction thereon to the end that the device may be used for gripping papers, the linger grips of the clip providing a means for hanging the file on the wall and the clip being so mounted on the plate that it will be impossible for it to become accidentally separated therefrom, either through the weight of the papers in the file or in case any one should exert a downward pull thereon when the lile is hanging on the wall.
The invention consists generally in various constructions and combinations, all as hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification,
Figure 1 is a front view of the back plate of a memorandum file embodying my invention, with a paper clip indicated in dotted lines thereon,
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view on the line 2--2 of Fig. 1,
Fig. 8 is an enlarged detail view show-i ing the manner of mounting the clip on the plate of the le,
Fig. 4 is a plan View of Fig. 1.
In the drawing, 2 represents the plate or backing of the lile, made of any suitable material, preferably metal, having preferably forwardly turned ears 3 at the top on each side of the middle portion. At the upper end of the plate I provide a section 4 that is pressed out of alinement with the main portion of the plate to form a depression 5 on one side and a groove 6 on the same side, with a correspondingly shaped rib 7 on the opposite side of the plate. The metal clip comprises the usual jaws 8 having iinger grips 9 thereon with holes 10 for hang-` ing the le on a hook or nail. These jaws are inserted through holes 11 in the spring that is cylindrical in vvShape and provided v vith end portions 13 and 13%l which bear on thejaws-S and normally tend to press them Vtogether and `grip the papers or other articles which maybe insertedbetween them.
To .mount `the device on the plate the 'upper edge of the latter is inserted between one end 13a of the spring and the adjacent jaw 8 until the rib 14, formed on the jaw 8, enters the depression 6 in the plate, while the end of the spring will slip down over the rib 7, thereby gripping the plate between the rib 1 4 and theend of the spring and securely holding the clip on the plate. This arrangelmenf, is clearly shown in Fig. 3, where it will be no ted that both jaws of the clip are on one` side of the memorandum plate, one jaw fitting snugly into the depression in the plate while the other is free to open and allow the insertion of papersbetween the two jaws, the clip being securely held on the plate .by the engagementof its spring with the rib formed in the plate and the coperation of this spring with the rib 14 fitting within the depression 6 in the plate. It will be noted that the device can be hung on the wall and that the clip will be securely locked on the plate without Vany securing means other than the tting of one of its jaws into the depression in the face of the plate.
I claim as my invention:
1. In combination, with a memorandumbackingplate, a paper clip mounted thereon comprising jaws and a spring normally holding them together and having both jaws on the same side` of said plate, one end of the clip spring engaging the face of the plate on the opposite side thereof from said jaws.
2. A memorandum file comprising a memorandum backing plate having a depressionV in one endg a paper clip comprising jaws and a spring normally holding them tobacking plate, of a paper clip having jaws with finger grips, a spring for normally holding said aws together, one end of said plate being inserted betWQl? one said jaws 95 gether and having one jaw fitting in said deone end of said spring and said plate having means for interlocking with said one jaw and said spring end.
4E. A memorandum ile comprising a plate having a depression formed in one end thereof and atransverse groove in said depression forming a corresponding rib on thel opposite side of the plate from said groove, a spring clip having a jaw seated in Said depression and a rib to enter said groove, a
second jaw one the same side of the plate as said first named jaw and a spring, cylindrical substantially in form, having openings to receive the ends of said jaws, and one end of said spring being seated on Said second named jaw for holding it with a yielding pressure against said first named jaw and the other end of said spring having a bearing on the rib in said plate on the opposite side thereof from both jaws.
5. A memorandum file comprising a plate having a rib formed therein, a paper clip having a jaw on the opposite side of said plate from said rib, a spring having an opening therein to receive said jaw, one end of said spring having a bearing on said jaw near its gripping end and the other end of said spring extending to the opposite side of said plate and having` a bearing on the rib therein. n
In witness whereof, Ilia-ve hereunto set my hand this 19th day of March, 1920.
GEORGE l-I. HOHNSBEEN.
