Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoE.
CHARLES SWETI, OF COPIAH COUNTY, MISSISSHPI, ASSIGNOR TO CHARLES SWETT AN D WILLIAM PALFRY, OF NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN FIRE-TONGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 139,832, dated June 10, 1873; application filed December 3, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES SwETT, of
.the county of Copia-h and State of Mississippi,
represented a vertical sectional view of my4 improved tongs,
The present improvement, wh1ch 1s a new article of manufacture, consists in a novel construction of tongs. The legs of the tongs, instead of being permanently attached at a pivot-head, as are those of the ordinary construction, are secured in a curved tube, one leg being permanetly fastened therein and the other so attached as to allow such play or movement as is necessary to open and close the tongs and is required in their practical use.
The great advantage of my improvement is found in the cheapness of manufacture and in the durability and accuracy of the tongs in use.
The construction and operation of my invention are as follows: A A are the legs of the tongs, which are ofthe ordinary form and constructed of any suitable material. B is a piece of gas or any other tube, and is bent into a curved form. The movable leg A of the tongs has a curved head, a, as clearly illustrated in the drawing, the degree of the curve being such as to allow a free play or travel to the head a in the socket of the tube. The other leg, A', is permanently Qattached within the tube, as shown at b. C is a handle, and is secured to the tube B by any suitable means. The free end of the tongs is bent so as to work freely in the curve or arc of the tube, and then the leg A is inserted and permanently fastened.
The movable leg A being inserted Within, and always compelled to travel in the arbitrary curve of the tube, and there being no pivot-joint to becomeV loose and get out `of order, the tongs are not onlyrendered more durable, but are much more readily operated than those of the usual construction.
What I claim as new, and desire to secureby Letters Patent of the United States, is-
As a new article of manufacture, the tongs,
consisting of the legs A Al and tube B, when the same are constructed, combined, and arranged so as to operate substantially as described. Y y
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presenceof two subscribing witnesses.
CHAS. SWETT.
Witnesses: EDWIN J AMES, Jos. T. K. PLANT.
