Description

UNITED STATES LEMUEL REED, OF ALLEGHENY, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN WASHING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 139,815, dated J une 10, '1873; application led- ,May 14, 1h73.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEMUEL REED, of Allegheny, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Washing-Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exactdescription thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
My invention is intended as an improvement upon the washing-machine for which Letters Patent No. 33,363 were granted to B. Reed, September 24, 1861, and it consists in the construction and arrangement of the re volving cylinder, whereby the rubbers are prevented from slipping out, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing which forms a part of this specilication, and in which- Figure l is a cross-section of the wheel or cylinder, and Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a part of the same.
A represents the central shaft, near each end of which is secured a head, B. This head is in the form of an annular ring with diametrical arms connecting the ring with the central shaft. 0n the inner side of each head B is made an inward-projecting circular flange, a, againstV which the triangular rubbers() C rest, said rubbers being held by lugs b b, as shown in Fig. 2. The rubbers C C are inserted between the lugs on the heads, after which the heads are secured by any suitable means to the central shaft A, thereby holding the rubbers in their places, and preventing them from slipping out.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the shaft A, heads B B with anges a and lugs b, and the rubbers C C, all substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing, I havehereunto set my hand in the presence of two witnesses.
LEMUEL REED.
