attorney DAVID KINES WADE, OF PORTLAND, OREGON.
ELECTRIC SIGN.
' Application filed June 27,
Z '0 aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID K. WADE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Portland, in the county of Multnomah and State of Oregon, have invented a new and useful Electric Sign, of which the following is a specification. i
This invention relates to signs, and more particularly to signs of the illuminated type, novel means being provided for changing the colors of the characters of the sign at intervals.
A further object of the invention is to provide a transparent cylinder within the box or casing of the sign, and an adjustable support for supporting the cylinder, thereby adapting the device for use with cylinders and lamps of various sizes.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a cylinder which may be rotated by a draft of air passing upwardly therethrough, means being provided to control the draft of air to cause the cylinder to revolve at various rates of speed.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of. construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Referring to the drawings Figure l is a to plan view of a sign constructed in accor ance with the present invention, the cover thereof being removed.
Fig. 2 is a fragmental detail view of the face of the sign.
Fig. 3 is a sectional viewtaken on line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
, Fig. 4: is a fragmental detail view of the adjustable support; and
Fig. 5 is a detail view disclosing the connection between the upper and lower sections of the adjustable support.
. Referring to the drawings in detail, the sign includes a box-like casing indlcated generally by the reference character 5, wh ch casing embodies a removable cover 6 which has a portion thereof extended upwardly as at 7, and since the cover 6 is formed preferablyof relatively thin sheet metal, 1t Wlll be seen that this member or portion 7 may Specification of Letters Patent.

be bent at various angles with respect to the cover.
The rear wall of thecasing is provided with an outwardly extending portion 8, which also may be moved to various a 1% to control the passage of the draft of air through the casing. Extending. inwardly from each of the side walls of the casing, is a curved member 9 which members are of lengths equal to the length of the casing, to direct the draft of air inwardly. Extend ing along the front of the casing is an upwardly curved wall 10 which has its free end disposed in proximity to the transparent cylinder 11, to be hereinafter more fully described, the wall 10 being for the purpose of directing air which enters through the openings 12 formed in the base or .bottom wall of the casing upwardly' The front wall of the casing is provided with a cut out portion as indicated at 13, which cut out portion ermits suitable reading'matter forming t e characters of the sign to be observed, the-characters being formed on transparent material, so that the light rays from the lamp 14; which is supported within the cylinder may be projected therethrough.
In order that the characters of the sign will be exceptionally attractive, a removable member 15 is provided, which removable member is formed preferably of a pane of glass on which is cemented cut or broken glass, the broken glass being indicated at 16, which broken or cut glass extends inwardly and is designed to reflect the light rays of various angles.
Supported within the casing is an adjustable support including the lower'leg members 16 and the up or curved supporting sections 17, which as its ends disposed within the leg members 16, the connection between the support and leg'members being such as to frictionally engage the ends of the support, so that when the supporting section 17 is moved with respect to the leg members, the same will be held in such positions of adjustment.
At the upper portion of the supporting I section 17 is a flange 18 that clamps a pintle 19 thereto, the 'intle being designed to rest on the curved caring member 20 which 15 carried by the upper end member 21 of the cylinder 11. This upper end member 21 is provided with downwardly extending blades is claimed as new 1s:-
passes upwardly through the cylinder 11 and contacts with the blades 22 to cause the cylinder 11 to revolve on the pintle 19.
As before stated, the cylinder 11 is made of transparent material which is colored by striping the same with colored material, so
'that when the light rays are pro ected through the cylinder. 11, they will produce a colored effect on the letter characters of the sign.
It is to be understood thatthe lamp 'will I have connection with a suitable source of electric supply through the wires 25, whereupon the heat from the light will cause the rotation of the cylinder as described.
Having thus described the invention, what 1. A sign including a, casing, said casing havin a transparent front wall, a revoluble cylin er formed of transparent, material of varying colors positioned within the casing, means for causing the cylinder to revolve, and curved members extending inwardly from the walls of the casing for regulating the passage of heat through the cylinder.
2. A sign including a casing having a .cover, amovable inclined wall forming a part of the cover, a revoluble cylinder having translucent walls of varying colors supported within the casing, illuminating means disposed within the cylinder and adapted to create a draft of air through the cylinder to cause the rotation thereof, said. movable inclined wall adapted to be adjusted to restrict the passage of the draft of air through the casing to vary the speed of the cylinder, and
said casing having a transparent front wall bearing a sign.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed my signature 1n the presence of two witnesses.
DAVID KINES WADE.
