UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ANDREW H. STONE, OF KANSAS CITY, MISSO URI.
Application filed June 12,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREW H. STONE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Extension- Tables, of which the following is a specifi cation.
My invention relates to improvements in extension tables which may be used to advantage in libraries, parlors, dining rooms, or wherever it is desired to have a table that can be adjusted to occupy a small spaceor extended to give additional capacity when needed.
The table embodies a plurality of foldable leaves which are hinged together, so that when not in use they may be folded and supported underneath the top of the table, said leaves being at all times attached to the table to prevent their loss and also to provide a table so constructed that it may be easily and quickly operated.
' In order that the invention may be fully understood, reference will now be had to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is an inverted plan view of the table extended.
Fig. 2 isan irregular longitudinal section taken on line IIII of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is an inverted plan view of the table folded into compact form.
Fig. 4 is an irregular cross section on line IV-IV of Fig. 3.
Fig.5 is an irregular cross section on line V-V of Fig. 1.
Fig. 6 is a detail perspective view of the extension leaves detached from the table.
Fig. 7 is a fragmentary section on line VII-VII of Fig. 1.
Fig. 8 is an inverted plan view of a modified form.
In carrying out the invention, I employ a frame consisting of a depending rim 2, transverse members 4, and longitudinal members 6. The transverse members 4 are secured at their ends to the rim 2, while the longitudinal members 6 are each secured at their ends to the transverse members 4 and at one edge to the inner surface of Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented N 0v. 22, 1921. 1920. Serial no. 388,574.
the rim 2. The transverse members "4 are provided at their undersides with blocks 8 to which the upper ends of the legs 10 are rigidly secured.
12 designates a pair of slidable leaves which constitute the table top when reduced 1 in the top of the rim 2 to which they are secured by suitable means such as screws 20, Fig. 5. The hooks 18 overlap the rails 14 and coact with guides 22 in holding the leaves 12 in position upon the rim 2. The guides 22 are fixed to the undersides of the leaves 12 by suitable means such as screws 23 and slidably engage the under surface of the longitudinal frame members 6.
24 designates a pair of foldable leaves adapted to be disposed between the slidable leaves 12 when the table top is extended as disclosed on Figs. 1 and 2, or folded beneath aid'slidable leaves 12 when the table top is contracted to the position disclosed on Figs. 3 and 4. The foldable leaves 24 are operably connected by hinges26 and one of said leaves is provided with plates 28 and a bearing 30, which are swiveled upon a rod 32 provided at one end with an arm 34 and at its opposite end with an arm 36 terminating in a handle 38 arranged close to one side of the rim 2 as disclosed on Figs. 1 and 4, so that it can be readily grasped for a purpose which will hereinafter appear.
The rod 32, which carries the foldable leaves 24 is journaled in bearings 40 secured to the top of the transverse frame members 4. Spacing leaves 41 are interposed between the plates 28 and the adjacent ends of the bearings 40, to prevent the extension leaves 24 from shifting toward either of the transverse frame members 4 and getting out of position to pass between the slidable leaves 12 when the same are drawn apart to admit said foldable leaves 24. Brackets 42 fixed to the undersides of the transverse frame members 4, coact with the rod 32 in supporting the foldable leaves 24 when in folded position.
Each slidable leaf 12 is provided'with two fixedly mounted stops 44 and 45. The stops 44 are engaged by the arms 34 and 36 to lock said slidable leaves 12 in abutting position as disclosed on Fig. 3, while the stops 45 hold the edges of the foldable leaves 24 when the table top is extended as disclosed on Fig. 1. The resiliency of the arms 34 and 36 enable them to engage the stops 44 and 45 with sufiicient friction to prevent the weight of the handle 38 from rocking the shaft 32 and thus moving the arms 34 and 36 downwardly and out of engagement with said stops. The stops 44 also limit the outward'movement of the leaves 12 by abutting the ends of the rim 2.
The foldable leaves 24 are reliably locked in extended position by a catch 48 and a keeper 50, which-latter is fixed to the leaf 24 which is mounted on the rod 32. The catch 48 is mounted on apivot 52 carried by a plate 54 fixed to the rail 2, and said catch 48 is yieldably held in engagement with the keeper 50 by a coil spring 56. The catch 48 automatically engages the keeper 50 when the leaves 24 are extended but must be manually released from said keeper 50 before the leaves 24 can be folded. A slot 60 is provided in one of the frame members 6 to allow the keeper 50 to engage the catch 481 In practice when the table top is to be extended the handle 38 is grasped and swung downwardly to disengage the arms 34 and 36 from the stops 44. The leaves 12 are then slid outwardly in opposite directions to each other until the stops 44 contact the rim 2. The foldable leaves 24 are then swung upwardly on the rod 32 and unfolded to rest uponthe rim 2 where they are secured by the catch 48 and the keeper 50. The leaves 12 are then slid toward each other until they abut the adjacent edges of the leaves 24, against which they are reliably secured by swinging the handle 38, upwardly to engage the arms 34 and 36 with the stops 45.
In the modified form disclosed by Fig. 8, the construction and operation of the parts are like those disclosed on the preferred form, the chief difference being that a bail.
38" is substituted for the handle 38. The bail 38 is longer than the handle 38 and hence can be more readily found with the hand when the arms 34 and 36 are to be engagedor disengaged from the stops 44* and 45*. The ends of the bail 38 are rotatably mounted in plates 28*, each of which has two bearings 29 instead of but one bearends of the bail 38 are prevented from mov ing apart by nuts 31 threaded upon said ends and abutting the adjacent bearings 29.
From the foregoing description, it will be readily understood that I have provided an extension table embodying the advantages ,above pointed out, and while I have shown leaves operably connected and arranged to fold beneath said slidable leaves when the same abut or be extended between said slidable leaves when the same are slid apart, stops on the slidable leaves, and a rod rockably mounted onthe frame and provided with means for engaging certain of the stops to lock said slidable leaves in abutting position and engage the other stops to lock the slidable leaves in extended position.
2. In a table of the character described, a frame, legs to said frame, slidable leaves mounted on said frame to slide apart or abut each other, foldable leaves operably connected and arranged to fold beneath said slidable leaves when the same abut or be extended between said slidable leaves when 7 the same are slid apart, a rod on which the foldable leavesare rockably mounted, bearings on the frame in which said rod is mounted, brackets secured to the frame and which coact with said rod in supporting the foldable leaves in .folded position, and spaced elements on each slidableleaf to coact with the rod in securing the slidable leaves in extended or abutting positions.
3. In a table of the character described, a frame, legs to said frame, slidable leaves mounted on said frame toslide apart or abut each other, two parallel rails associated with grooves in the under sides of the slidable leaves, hooks secured to the frame and projecting into the grooves to overlap said rails, foldable leaves operably connected and arranged to fold beneath said slidable leaves when the same abut or be extended between said slidable leaves when the same are slid apart, a rod on which the foldable leaves are rockably mounted, bearings on the frame in which said rod is mounted, brackets secured to the frame and which coact with said rod in supporting the foldable leaves in folded position, and spaced elements on each slidable leaf to coact with the rod in securing the'slidable leaves in extended or} abutting positions.
4. In a table of the character described, a frame, legs to said frame, slidable leaves mounted on said frame to slide apart orabut each other, foldable leaves operably connected and arranged to fold beneath said slidable leaves when the same are slid apart, a rod carrying the foldable leaves and rockaably mounted on the frame, arms on said rod, and two members spaced apart on each F.
