UNITEDV STATES THOMAS WILLNER JOHNSON, or'nnnvnn, cononano.
CUSIIDOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Pareneednev. 22, 1921.
Application filed November 20, 1920. Serial No. 425,414.
To all 'whom t 'mamy concern.'
Be it known that I, THOMAS VVILLNER JOHNSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Denver, in the county of Denver and State of Colorado, have invented a new and useful Cuspidor, of'which the following is a specication.
This invention relates to cuspidors, one of its objects being to provide a sanitary device of this character which is selfvllushing With the foregoing and other objects in,
view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that within the scope of what is claimed, changes in the precise embodiment of the invention shown can be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanyingV drawing, which is a section through the device, the preferred form of the invention has been shown.
Referring to the drawing by characters of refernece 1 designates a bowl-like body of porcelain or similar material mounted on legs 2 or in any other manner desired, this body being provided at the bottom with a drain pipe 3 while formed in the lower portion of the contracted mouth fl ofthe body is an annular shoulder 5. Formed within the wall of the body and within the shouldered portion is an annular passage 6 having outlet openings 7 extending from the upper portion thereof and downwardly above the shoulder 5 while formed in the bottom wall of the annular passage 6 are concentric series of openings 8 extending downwardly and inwardly as shown.
The Shoulder 5 is adapted to be engaged by the flanged upper end 9 of a basket 10 which is seated in the body and has supporting legs 11 designed to rest on the bottom portion of the body. The bottom of the basket is preferably extended upwardly, as indicated at 12, all portions of the basket being made of wire fabric.
A supply pipe 13 opens into the bottom wall of the passage 6 and is adapted to be connected to a curved pipe. This pipe 13 has a valve 14 the stem of which is provided with an arm 15. Said arm extends partly round the basket 10 and is provided at its free end with a float 16 which also constitutes a weight for holding the valve normally opened.
When the float 16 is in its lowermost position, as shown in the drawing, water will flow from the pipe 13 and through the pas` sage 6 to the various ,outlet openings 7 and 8, thus discharging in jets into and against the basket. The jets issuing from the openings 7 will be projected into the top portion of the basket while the jets issuing from the openings 8 will be directed against the outer surface of the basket. yThese jets will obviously flush the basket and clean it and as the water will enter the body 1 too rapidly to be carried olf by the pipe 3, float 16 will arise and ultimately out offl the supply of water to the passage 6, thereby preventing the water from overflowing.
A device ofthis character is obviously kept clean and as it is formed of but few parts, it will not readily get out of order.
What is claimed is:
1. The combination with a ybody having an outlet opening in the bottom thereof, of an annular shoulder within the upper portion of the body, a basket supported in the body and having an open upper end engaging the shoulder, an annular passage within the wall of the body and adjacent the shoulder, said passage having outlet openings for directing jets of fluid downwardly into the open end of the basket and additional outlet openings for directing jets of fluid downwardly onto the outer surfaceof the basket, and means for directing liquid in to the passage.
2. The combination with a body having an outlet opening in the bottom thereof, of an interior annular shoulder upon the wall of the body adjacent the top thereof, a basket having an open Lipper end engaging and supported by the shoulder, legs upon the bottom of the basket and engaging the body, an annularppassage within the wall of the body and adjacent the shoulder, there being outlet openings extending from said passage for directing jets of liquid downwardly into the basket and additional outlet openings directing concentric series of jets down In testimony that I claim the foregoing as Wardly against the outer surface of the my own, I have hereto affixed my signature basket, means for supplying liquid to the 111 the presence of two witnesses.
passage, a valve for controlling the i'loW of VTHOMAS VVILLNER JOHNSON. 5 liquid through said means, and a combined Witnesses:
Hoet and Weight for controlling the actua l A JOSEPH KIGH,
tion of the valve. Y JOHN H. WATKINS.
