Description
Unir-En srars orrrcn.
Jos. BUHLER, or NEW YORK, N. Y.
CONSTRUCTION OF INJECTION-SYRINGES.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, JOSEPH BUHLER, M. D., of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Instrument for the Treatment of Diseases of the Generative Organs of Females; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing', forming part of this specification,
Vwhich represents a central longitudinal section of the instrument.
This instrument is to be employed in the treatment of syphilis or any diseases of the womb.
1t consists of a glass cylindrical receiver A, open at one end and closed at the other by a metal head B, to which is attached an exhausting pump C, and a force pump D. The exhausting pump C, is constructed with a solid piston c, and without valves and is provided with a simple cock a, to open and close the passage b, communicating with the cylinder. The force pump D, has a solid piston d, and has a straight passage e, communicating with the receiver A, and from this straight passage, a passage f, branches off to the suction pipe It, which should be of india rubber or other flexible material. At the junction of the passages e, f, there is a three way cock g, having a straight passage 1, directly through it and a passage Qbranching therefrom to one side. The head B, is provided with a screw nozzle at the mouth of the passage c, to receive a mouth piece z', of any desired form.
The operation of the instrument is as follows: To prepare it for use, the cock a, is opened and the cock g, turned to close all communication from the receiver either to the force pump or to the atmosphere, as shown in the drawing', the position of the cock being determined by stops on the outside, and the piston c, of the exhausting pump requires to be pushed up as far as possible toward the receiver A. The receiver A, is then inserted into the vagina and vthe piston c, of the exhausting pump, is drawn out by hand to exhaust the air from the receiver which causes the neck of the uterus and the surrounding parts to be drawn up so -far into the receiver as to bevisible to the eye of the medical attendant through lthose parts of the receiver and to close the passage f.
the sides of the receiver which are outside the body. This being done, the cock a, is closed, and the medical attendant is enabled to ascertain the nature or state and exact seat of the disease. When this is done, medical applications are made by the force pump in the following manner. The balsain or other medicinal preparation is drawn through the suction pipe into the pump by drawing out the piston cl, while the cock g, remains in the position shown in the drawing, andv after this the cock is turned to bring the passage l, in line with the passage 2, to open communication from the pumlp to ow by forcing in the piston cl, toward the receiver, the medicinal preparation is injected through the mouth piece z', to the seat of disease. If washing of the parts be necessary' before applying the medicinal preparations, this may be done by dipping the nozzle of the suction pipe 7L, in water turning the cock g, to open the passage f, to the force pump, filling the force pump and then turning the cock to close the passage f, and open the passage c, from the pump to the receiver, and afterward working the piston (Z, back and forth for some time. The water thus used in washing is afterward drawn back into the pump, and finally expelled through the suction pipe it, by properly turning the cock and forcing the piston toward the passage e. Vashing in this way may be several times repeated with fresh water, if necessary. During the operation of washing and applying the medicinal preparations, the cock a, of the exhausting pump has remained closed, but after the application of the medicinal preparations, the cock a., is opened and the piston c, is pushed in to allow the womb and surrounding parts to return to their' places.
l do not claim any of the parts of this apparatus separately, but
lhat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,
The combination of the receiver A, and pumps C and D, provided with cocks a, and g, in the manner and for the purpose herein set forth.
