PUNCH-PRESS CHUCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 15, 192i.
Application filed March 22, 1920. Serial No. 367,858.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Trrnonon ZETTER- LUND, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Milwaukee, in the county of M11- waukee and State of WVisconsin, have in vented certain new and useful Improvements in Punch-Press Chucks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates broadly to new and useful improvements in chucks, and particularly to chucks for use on punch presses and the like for holding punches and similar tools.
At the present time the chucks of punch presses are very unsatisfactory in that they do not effectively hold the punches and the chuck or clamping blocks thereof are liable to be so positioned with respect to the cross head which carries the same that they interfere with and mar the work.
It is therefore one of the principal objects of the invention to provide an improved chuck, the blocks of which are so assembled with respect to each other and to the cross head that their work faces will always remain in the plane of the work face of the latter.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a simply constructed and effective means for securing the chuck blocks in operative position so as to securely hold a punch or the like in the cross head.
With these general objects in view the invention consists of the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts which will be hereinafter more particularly described and claimed and shown in the drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 represents a vertical sectional view through a cross head of a punch press showing my improved chuck carried thereby.
Fig. 2 is a horizontal section taken sub stantially on the plane of the line 22 of Fi 1.
l ig. 3 is a front elevational view of the lower end portion of the cross head and chuck shown in Fig. 1.
The present invention being designed particularly for use in connection with such machines as punch presses, it is illustrated in the. accompanying drawing in association with a conventional type of cross head 1 adapted to be reciprocated vertically in suitable guideways (not shown) with which face of the inner block 5 and is guides 2 cooperate. This cross head carries a chuck 111 which a punch or the like 3 is secured, and the invention relates to an in1- proved type of chuck for use therewith.
be lower portionv of the cross head is provided with a chuck block seat 4, the entrance of inner and outer chuck blocks 5 and respectively thereinto being through one slde of said cross head. the chuck blocks 5 and 6 are adapted to be slid into and out of the seat 4 through the entrance thereto. The adjacent opposed sides of the chuck blocks are provided with clamp faces 7 between which the tool or punch 3 is secured.
The portion of the wall of the seat t opposite sa1d entrance is substantially semicircular as at 8 and the adjacent portion of the wall of the inner block 5 is similarly shaped to abut thereagainst. The wall etigaging sides of the outer chuck block 6, however, are straight for contact with the straight outer end portions of the seat wall. Said seat wall is provided throughout its length with a channel 9, the inner portion of which is shaped to the curvature of the portion 8 of the said wall, whereas its outer ends are in communication with said entrance into the chuck block seat. Although the chuck blocks are adapted to slide into and out of the seat substantially transversely of the cross head, they are retained against longitudinal movement with respect to the latter by laterally extending The flange 10 is formed on the curved suradapted to lie in the arcuate portion of the channel 9, the flanges 11 being seated in the outer end portions of said channel as shown.
Each of the chuck blocks 5 and 6 is provided with a pair of bores, the axes of which extend at right angles to the planes of the clamp faces. The corresponding bores of the blocks are adapted to be alined and receive the shanks of clamp screws 12, these screws being disposed one on each side of the punch 3 as shown in Fig. 2. Said shanks extend through both blocks 5 and 6 and are threaded into the curved portion 8 of the seat wall. Thus the inner block 5 is engaged with the seat wall and is held tightly thereagainst by the force exerted on the outer block by the heads of the screws 12.
()wing to the fact that the chuck blocks are relatively wide in plan view and that the In other words flanges l0 and 11..
cross head.
bores for the screws 12 are relatively long said shanks will have considerable engagement With the blocks and thereby prevent them from shifting With res set to each other or to the screws as is possible With the structures now in use. Furthermore the provision of the channel 9 and the flanges 10 and 11 prevents the blocks fromshifting when the screws 12 are tight, and these same parts prevent the Work faces of the chuck blocks from getting out of alinement with or out of the plane of the Work face of the I claim: r
A device of the class described including i a chuck body'having a chnclrblock seat, said seat having a block entrance through one Wall of the body, the portion of the Wall of the seat opposite said entrance being curved,
the Wall of said seat having a continuous channehrits opposite ends being in communication with said entrance, a pair of blocks slidable into and out of the seat through said entrance, the inner block having one side curved to the shape of thecurved portion of the seat Wall and provided with a flange engageable in the channel of the last mentioned portion of the seat wall, the outer block having flanges extending from its opposite sides for engagement With the outer end portions of the channel; and means for securing the blocks in the side.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand at Milwaukee,
in the county of ll/lilvvaukee and State of Wisconsin.
