T 0- all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE A. MARTIN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Window Frame and Sash Structure, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in Window frames and sashes of the type in which the sashes are counterbalanced by weights attached thereto by flexible connections, such as cords or chains, which weights operate in vertical passages or pockets located in the sides of the frames outwardly of vertical guideways therein for the sashes, and it consists in certain peculiarities of the construction, novel arrangement, combination and; operation of the various parts thereof as will be hereinafter more fully set forth and specifically claimed.
In window frames and sashes of the above mentioned type heretofore in general use, it
has been a difficult task to reattach the weights for the sashes to the'suspending devices therefor, when said welghts have become accidentally detached by the breakage of the cords or chains, and it has also been difficult to adjust the cords or chains after they have become stretched or elongated. In'order to remove, change, reattach, or to adjust the suspending devices of the weights in the old style window frames and sashes, it has been usually necessary to remove the molding or beadingion the inner surfaces of the window frames and then to remove the sashes from the frames, which operatlon requires considerable time and labor, and besides, causes dust anddirt collected on the window frames and sashes and within the dirt boxes of the former to be scattered or distributed in the room, as is well known to those skilled in the art to which my invention pertains.
To provide a' window frame and sash structure of such construction, combination and operation ofits parts as to enable ready access to the passageway or pockets of the frames in orderto attach. weights to the cords or chains of the sashes or to adjust said suspending devices without the necessity of removing the sashes from the frame is the pr nc pal object of my inv n i n- In the accompanying drawing which serves to illustrate an embodiment of the .invention Figure 1 is an inner face view of a portion of a window frame and sash structure embodying my improvements showing the sashes thereof in their normal'positions.

Like numerals of reference refer to corresponding parts throughout the different views of the drawing.
The reference numeral 7 designates a portion of the wall of abuilding in which is located a window frame constructed according to my improvements, which frame is designated as a whole by the numeral 8 and is rectangular in shape and of any suitable size and material. Each ofthe vertical sides or walls of the frame is provided with a vertically disposed pocket or passageway 9 which extends from the upper part of the transverse portion of the frame to the corresponding portion at the lower part thereof as is clearly shown in Fig. 2 of the drawing. This pocket or passagewayhas horizontally located in its lower portion at a suitable distance above the floor thereof a plate'or block 10 which is perforated or provided the walls and bottom of the passageway or pocket. 1
The inner wall 13 of each of said pockets, or the inner surface of each of the upright side portions or jambs ofthe frame is provided with a parting strip 14.- which is located midway between the edges of said wall 13 and together with the inner edge of the outer wall 15 of said pocket or frame anda vertical bead or cleat 16 secured to the inner ed e of the inner face wall 17 of the aocket.
or jamb provides guideways for the upper and lower sashes which are designated as a whole by the reference numerals 18 and 19 respectively. The inner wall 13 of each of the pockets or passageways 9 is provided in its upper portion with a doorway l8 -which is vertically disposed and extends upwardly from a point at about the horizontal middle of the upper rail of the lower sash and the lower rail of the upper sash when said sashes are in their normal or closed positions to a point near the upper end of the wall 13 as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. This doorway 18" is closed by means of a door 19 which is rabbeted at its upper and lower ends to fit correspondingly shaped rabbets in the upper and lower ends of the doorway. The door 19 has on its surface adjacent the side rails of the sashes a parting strip 20 which coincides vertically with the parting strip 141 on the fixed wall 13 of each of the side portions of the frame.
Near its upper end each of the walls 13 is provided on each side of the parting strip 1 1 with a cut-away portion 21 in each of which is journaled a pulley 22, over which pulleys are passed chains or cords 23 and 2 1 to the end of each of which and located in the pocket 9 is attached a weight 25 of the ordinary or any preferred construction. Each of the upper corners of each of the sashes is provided with a downwardly inclined and elongated opening or mortise 26, see Fig. 3 of the drawing, which mortise is formed in the vertical or side rails of the sashes as shown. The upper end of each of the side rails of each sash is provided with a transversely disposed recess or depression 27 which extends from the opening or mortise 26 inwardly to near the inner surface of said rail andterminates in a vertical opening 28.

the reception of the upper portion of a fastening wire which is designated as a whole by the numeral 29 and comprises a main body portion 30 having a coil 31 and aloop 32 which are adapted to be located in the elongated opening 26 of each of the side rails of each'sash where it can be securely held in place by means of a screw 33 extended from the inner face of each of the side rails of each sash into the opening 26 thereof. The fastening wire 29 also comprises a horizontally disposed portion or arm 34 which is designed to restin the groove or depression 27 and which terminates in a downwardly extended arm 35 which engages the opening 28 in the upper end of each of the side rails of each sash.
From the foregoing and by reference to the drawing, it will be readily understood and clearly seen that, assuming the inner end of each of the cords or chains 23 and 2a is connected to a loop of one of the fasteners 29 and that said fasteners are located and held in the position shown in Fig. 3 of the drawing by the means above stated, and it is desired to obtain access to the pockets or passageways 9 for adjusting the weights on the cords or chains or for detaching said weights from the cords in order to replace them with others, all that is necessary to be done is to lower the uppermost sash to its downward limit, when it is apparent that the door 19 of the doorway 18 can be readily removed so that access may be had to the pockets 9 for removing the detached weight therefrom and for adjusting the weights on the cords or for performing any other act which may be necessary in connection with the cords and weights, after which it is obvious that the door 19 may be placed in the doorway so as to close the same, when it is apparent the sashes may be moved up and down as desired.
By providing each of the fasteners 29 with the arm 27 it is apparent that said arm will provide means by which the fastener can be removed from the opening 26 after the screw 33 which holds it in place is removed.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. The combination with an upright rectangular frame having a vertically disposed passageway or pocket, the outer surface of the inner wall of said pocket having a vertical guideway and being provided in its upper portion with a removable door and above said door with an opening, of a sash located in said guideway for vertical movement therein, a pulley journaled in said opening, said sash having in the upper portion of one of its side rails a downwardly extended opening and in the top of its said rail a transversely extended depression terminating in a vertical 0 ening,a fastener located in said downwardly extended opening and comprising a body portion having a coil and a loop and a horizontally disposed arm terminating in avertically disposed arm to engage said depression and. vertically disposed opening respectively, a flexible connection extended over said pulley and detachably fastened at one of-its ends to said fastener, a weight on the other end of said flexible connection, and a screw extended in to the upper portion of one of the side rails of said sash to engage the loop of said fastener.
