To all '10 71cm it may concern Be it known that l, Emit l1. Nrnuivn, a citizen of the United idtates, residing at Detroit, in the county of lVayno and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful improvements in Rail-Joints, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to improvements in connecting means for the abutting; ends of railway rails.
in carrying out my invention it is my purpose to produce a simple means for connecting two rail ends which are so associated with. the rails and secured thereto as to hold the rails against vertical or lateral movement, to peitnit the said rails a imited longitudinal movement necessary for expansion and contraction.
lit is also my aim to produce a rail joint wherein the heat s as well as the base flanges of two abutting rails are notched on the outer face of said rails, to provide for splice bar which is arranged in the fishing spa es of the rails upon the said outer face or side, said splice bar being centrally formed with a projection in the nature of a foot on its lower edge, the head portion of the splice bar being received in the notches of the heads of the rails, and the foot portion of the splice bar being r'ceived in the notches of the base flanges of the rails, suit able securing elements, of the usual nature, connecting the splice bar to the rails.
A further object of the invention is to provide means for effectively connecting the meeting ends of two railway rails which i lay be secured on wooden ties and integrally formed on metallic ties.

The upper face of the foot 10 is inclined as indicated by the numerals 11.
The bar 8, adjacent to the ends, and at equal distances from the center thereof is provided with elongated holes 18. On the inner faces or sides of the rails, and in the fishing spaces thereof is preferably arranged a plate 14 that is also provided with openings alining with the openings in the plate 8 and in the webs of the rail. Through these alining openings pass bolts 15 on which are screwed the usual nuts 16. The foot 10 is provided with openings through which spikes are driven, as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 3 of the drawings, when the improvement is employed in connection with a wooden tie. it is one of the objects of the invention, however, to employ the impro re ment in connection with metal ties, and in Figs. 7 to 9 of the drawings such construc tion is illustrated.
In Figs. 7 to 9 the rails 17 have their heads, upon their outer faces notched as previously described, and their base flanges like-- wise notched. In the pockets provided by the notches of the alining rails 17 is received the head 18 of the connecting means. The head is integra ly formed on and projects centrally from a plate 19, the said plate being of any desired length and being of a width to be snugly received in the fishing spaces of the rails and to contact with the upper face of the base fian'ges and under faces of the heads of the said rails. The late 19 is provided with openings which aline with similar openings in the Webs of the rail, certain of the openings of the rails being disposed near the ends thereof and outward of the shoulders provided by the notched or cut-away head and base flanges of the said rails. Through these alining openings pass bolts 20 that are engaged by nuts 21.
The plate 19, directly in a line with the head 18 is integrally formed with an outwardly extending foot portion 22 against tae ends of which the shoulders provided by the cut-away or notched base flanges of the rails 17 contact. The upper face of the foot is inclined as indicated by the numeral 23, and the said foot is welded or otherwise secured on the upper flange 24: of a metallic E-tie 25. this construction it will be seen that the rails may be easily and quickly connected and supported and held on the metallic ties, the bolts 20 passing through openings in angle plates 26 On the inner sides of the rails as illustrated in Fig. 9 of the drawings. Tt will be thus seen that except for the bolts and nuts no auxiliary means are employed for holding the rails connected or for holding the rails on the ties.
The improved tie joint and rail splice brace can be arranged on the tie in such a manner, especially in curves in the road, that on the inside of the curve the splice is so fixed to the tie that the same will be arranged inside of the rails, and thus the improvement may be used on both sides of the rails. The rail braces are arranged so that the rail on one side of the track is on the outside of the rail brace and the other side on the inside, so that in exchanging the ails from one side to the other those rails hat were on the inside of the joint splice now be on the outside and on the other of the track, and those that were on the outside will be arranged on the inside of the splice. In this case, however, the inside splice brace will be slightly modified and at the top only so that the rail brace will aline with the inside edge of the rail ball or head suiiiciently therebelow as to not obstruct the flange on the wheels of the rolling stock. The openings in the splice may be elongated, and it is believed that the foregoing description, when taken in nection with the drawings will fully set fcith the construction and advantages of the improvement to those skilled in the art to which such inventions relate. It is also to be stated that while the drawings and description refer to a satisfactory embodiment of the invention as it now appears to me, e ch changes may be made therefrom as fall within the scope of what is claimed.
