Be it known that 1, Norman ISACHSON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Albion, in the county of Cassia and State of Idaho, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Engine-Timers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to spark timing apparatus for use in internal combustion engines, and is designed more particularly for use in connection with Ford engines, though not limited to such use.
The invention aims to provide a construction which will be free from the detrimental effects of the lubricating oil which works out from the cam shaft bearings, and further to so construct and arrange the parts that the play due to wear on the cam shaft will not affect the proper timing action.
ll ith these and other objects in view, the invention includes the novel features of construction and arrangement and combination of parts hereinafter described and particularly defined by the appended claims.
An embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which:

Referring by reference characters to this drawing, the numeral 1 designates the engine frame and 2 the timer shaft or cam shaft by which the rotor of the timer is carried. 3 designates the commutator or timer shell which is made of customary material and which is provided with a cylindrical portion 3 which fits within or abuts against an annular flange 1 on the face plate or part 1 of the engine. The outer portion of the shell is preferably made of approximately conical shape as shown, and is provided at its outer extremity with a seat or hearing section 3 which is engaged by the usual clamp arm 4: to hold the shell in position. Within the cylindrical portion of the shell, I place an annular lining sleeve or band 5 and inside of this a fiber ring 6, fiber being specified as the preferred insulating material, though other material may be used if desired without departing from the spirit of my invention. This fiber ring 6 is provided with recesses 6 in its face to receive Specification of Letters Patent.

the contact members 7 which are arranged equidistant from each other and correspond in number to the number of cylinders of the engine, four being shown as the number reqinred for a Ford engine and as an example. These contact members are preferably provided with lips 7 which overlap the inner face of thering 6 and they are provided with threaded holes 7 which receive the screws 8 which serve to hold the contact members and fiber ring in position and also to connect the conductor wires.
The screws are provi led preferably with knob heads 8 as shown to enable them to be conveniently operateo, and they are pro vided with fiber washers 9 to insulate them from the shell. Upon the end of the cam shaft 2 5 place a collar or sleeve 10 which is keyed thereon by a pin 11 engaging a slot 10 in the collar and a correspendinghole in the cam shaft, the key or pin being held in place by a cupped washer 12 interposed between the sleeve and the nut 18 applied to the end of the cam shaft. This sleeve may conveniently and economically be made bv bending apiece of sheet metal into cylindrical form, the edges having two marginal flanges which are riveted together and form a flange 10 Longitudinal cuts are made in the d 5- posite side of the sleeve and the portion of the wall of the sleeve between these cuts is bent outward at right angles as shown at 10 to form a lug or projection the end of which is shaped to form a bearing (Z for one arm of the yoke hereinafter described.
The flange 19 opposite this projection is cut away and the cut away face is provided 'ith a bearing (Z for the other arin of the yoke. The yoke is shown at 14 and comprises a substantially semicircular body portion, bent up preferably from sheet metal and having the extremities of the arms thereof provided with openings to receive the bearing projections or bosses (Z, d of the sleeve. The arm on the flange side of the sleeve is provided with a projection 14 which coacts with the non-cut-away portion of the flange 10 and thereby serves as a stop to limit the swinging movement of the yoke under the action of the compression spring 15 which is located between a )rojection 10* on the sleeve and a projection 1 1* on the yoke, it being understood that the stop is to hold the yoke in position convenient for assembling. 1. In a spark timing device, the combination with the timer shaft, of a sleeve on said shaft, a yoke pivoted on the sleeve, a
spring acting on said yoke, said sleeve hav ing a lug or'projection and said yoke a part cooperating with said projection to limit the movement of theyoke, a brush carried by said yoke, I a timer casin encircling the shaft, and a plurality of contacts carried by said casing and cooperating with said brush.
2. In a spark timing device, the combination with the timer shaft of a sleeve on said shaft comprising a sheet of metal bent to sleeve form with the edge portions in the shape of abutting flanges secured together, the opposite sides of said sleeve having bearmg projections, a yoke having arms pivoted V on said projections, a spring acting on said yoke, a brush carried by said yoke, and a timer casing" encircling, said shaft and carrying contacts.
3. In a spark timing device, the combina-- tion with the timer shaft of a sleeve on said shaft comprising a sheet of metal bent to sleeve form with marginal portions in the shape of abutting flanges secured together, said flan es having a cut-away portion with a pivot projection, an'outwardly turned integral' portion on the opposite side of said sleeve carrying a pivc-tprojection, a yoke pivoted on said pro ections, a spring acting on said yoke, a brush carried by said yoke,
and a plurality of annularly arranged con-' tacts with which said brush coacts.
4. In a spark timing device, the combination with the timer shaft, of brush pivotally supoprted from saidshaftand disposed in a plane substantially perpendicular thereto, a spring acting on said brush, a timer casing having a cylindrical portion surrounding said shaft, an insulating sleeve within said cylindrical portion, a ring within said sleeve having recesses in its face, contacts located in said recesses and having lugs overlapping the inner face of the ring, and hindingscrews passing through the insulating sleeve and cylindrical portion for bolding the-contacts and ring in position.
