Be it known that I, HORACE M. DnRiuoK,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Malheur, in the county of Malheur and State of Oregon, have invented new anduseful Improvements in Plows, of which the following isa specification.
The object of my present invention is the provision of a plow of improved construc tion in the respect that it lsadapted to be. operated to andfro in a fieldwithout the necessity of turning the plow bodies; the
beam and handles being detachablyfastened to the shank of the plow bodies and being adapted at the end of a traverse to be unfastened from the shank and turned about the same and again fastened to the shank so that the plow bodies may be moved in reverse direction. 1
To the attainment of the foregoing, the
invention consists in the improvement as hereinafter described and definitely claimed.

The embodiment illustrated constitutes the best practical reduction to practice of my inventionof which I am cognizant, and among other elements it comprises a beam 1 and handles 2; the said handles 2 being arranged as shown relatively to the beam, and one handle being fixed at 3 to one side of the rear portion of the beam. The rear portion of the beam 1 is reduced as indicated by 4 to afford a shoulder 5, and located Specification of Letters latent.

above the reduced portion 4 is a longitudinal latch rod 6 that extends forwardly through the shoulder 5 and is adapted to intersect the vertical bore 7 of the beam. The latch rod 6 is guided through an appropriate abutment 8 and is equipped with a coil spring 9, interposed between the said abutment 8 and an enlargement 10 on the latch rod at a point in front of the abutment 8.
The saidlspring 9 tends to normally and yieldingly retain the latch rod 6 in the bore 7, and therefore I provide a lever 11 for the convenient retraction of the latch rod 6. The said lever 11 is fulcrumed in a bifurcation 12 at the rear end of the beam 1 and its upper arm is pivotally connected to the rear end portion of the latch rod 6.
Arranged in the bore 7 of the beam 1 is the upper journal portion of the standard 13 in which journal portion are diametrically opposite seats let to receive the forward end of the latch rod 6. The said standard 13 carries plow bodies 15 and 15, audit will be noted that the moldboards of the plow bodies 15 and 15 are arranged at the same side of the beam 1. It will also be noted that the plow bodies are reversely arranged- 6., the points of the said plow bodies are directed in opposite directions. The said plow bodies 15 and 15 are connected with the standard 13 through the medium of braces 16 and 17 arranged at opposite sides of and fixed to the standard 13.
Interposed between and fixed to the portion of the beam 1 in front of the standard 13 is a brace 18 which is also arranged between the forward portions Fig. 4 of the handles 2 and is fixed to the inner sides of the said portions. The said brace 18 is provided at an intermediate point in its length with 'a collar 19 which receives and is adapted to turn about the intermediate journal portion 20 of the shank 13. Manifestly in practice the brace 18 is formed in two sections which are bolted together at opposite sides of the standard 13, as indicated In the practical use of my novel plow it will be understood that after the completion of a traverse across a field, it is simply neces sary for the plownian to retract the latch rod 6 and then turn the beam 1, handles 2 and brace 18, as a unit, about the standard 13 until the said beam 1, handles 2 and brace 18 are arranged reversely to their former position, when the latch rod 6 will spring into the presented seat in the standard 13 and therebyvdetachably fix the beam and the parts fixedly connected to the beam in the new position. The draft animals of course are turned at the end of the traverse and then it is simply necessary for the operator to drive the plow back in the direction opposite the first-named traverse. Of course it is feasible for the operator to shift the plow laterally after the reversing operation described so that the return traverse will be in parallelism with the first-named traverse. It will also be understood that during the making of a traverse the rear plow body will be idle and will be merely trailed behind the working plow body. It will be appreciated from the foregoing that my novel plow is simple and inexpensive in construction, and that it is materially advantageous vin hill side plowing and for general plowing inasmuch as it leaves no back furrows.

The combination in a plow, of a beam having a reduced rear portion and a shoulder at the forward end thereof and also having a vertical bore in front of said shoulder, handles, a longitudinal latch rod arranged to work through said shoulder of the beam and extend into said bore, a standard having an upper journal portion disposed in said bore and provided with oppoend of the latch rod, said standard also having a journal portion at an intermediate point in its height, a brace having an intermediate collar recciving said journal portion of the shank and also having end portions fixed to the beam and the handles, respectively, reversely arranged plow bodies disposed with their moldboards at the same side of the beam, and braces fixed to said plow bodies and arranged at opposite sides of and fixed to the standard.
