To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, SAMUEL Anonrntts CLARK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Seattle, in the county of King and State of lVashington, have invented certain new and useful lrnprovements in Sewing- Cabinets; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to a sewing cabinet, and the object is to produce a device of the type indicated which shall be suitable for the reception of articles such as those commonly used by a seamstress, the cabinet being formed in sections, and the upper portion of the sides being also formed separately from the lower portions of the sides, means being provided for throwing into an open position, in one operation the sectional elements of the top and the movable elements of the sides.

A further object is to provide a cabinet including a main receptacle, in the upper portion of which a tray is received, the upper portion of the cabinet including foldable side members which may be dropped to an open position in order to form shelves or leaves movable outwardly with reference to each other, the top consisting of hinged sections movable upwardly and toward each other to an open position.

A still further object is to provide in connection with the construction above outlined, means for effecting the outward and downward movement of the leaves and the upward movement of the sections of the top, to an open position, in one operation.

With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of elements hereinafter described and claimed.

The bottom of the cabinet is designated 10, the end members are shown at 11, 12, and the permanently connected sides are designated 14 and 15. The upper sections of the sides shown at 16 and 17, form shelves or leaves, when in an open position, and when closed are slightly inclined toward each other, and pass under the edges of the foldable sections of the top. I

Extending lengthwise of the cabinet between the end members is a bar 18, to which the sections 19 and 20 of the top are hinged. Hinges are designated 23, and the hinges for the toldable sides are shown at 24. The edge portions of elements 16 and 17 are graduated in inches and fractions thereof as shown at 25.

A tray 26 is mounted in the cabinet approximately midway between the bottom and the top, and is provided with racks 27 for spools. This tray is supported on cleats, especially those shown at 28 and 29. A vertical partition 30 is mounted adjacent to one end wall of the cabinet, the tray being mounted between this partition and the opposite end wall. WVithin the space between the partition and the end wall are located the operative devices controlling the movable sections of the top, and the foldable side sections.

Arms 31 and 32 are pivotally mounted at 83 on the end wall and are pivotally connected at 34 with the respective shelves or leaves. These arms are also pivotally connected together as shown at 35, and a vertical bar extends upwardly through bar 18, being connected at its lower end with the pivot 35', and being provided on its upper end with a knob 37 permitting of manual operation. Downward pressure on the knob depresses the inner ends of arms 31, 32, throwing their outer ends upwardly and consequently raising the foldable side sections or leaves. A guiding element 38 for the vertical rod is connected with the adjacent end member of the casing.

In order to move the top sections to open or closed position at the same time the foldable sections of the sides are moved, I connect the sections 19 and 20 of the top by means of pivoted rods 40 and 41 with the vertical bar 35 between the guiding element 38 and the central pivotal point. This connection may readily be effected by passing the ends of rods or bars 40 and 41 around the vertical bar, to form a loop member on each bar 40 or 4:1. The sections 19 and 20 of the top will then drop by gravity when the central pivotal connection of the bars, and therefore the inner ends of the bars, move downwardly. In the reverse of this operation the inner ends of the pivoted bars when moving to an upper position will raise the bars and therefore raise sections 19 and 20 of the top.

The other ends of the foldable side sections 16 and 17 have pivotal connection with arms 45 and 46 cooperating with guiding members 47 and 48 mounted on the adjacent end wall of the casing. A cushioned stop 49 is provided between the hinged sections of the top, and the stops 50 are provided for the side sections 16 and 17. Loop members 52 may be mounted on the under side of the sections of the top, and serve tohold various articles which the individual using the cabinet may desire to place therein. It is obvious that these and other details of construction may be modified, within the scope of the appended claims.

Having thus described the invention, what I claim is 1. In a device of the class described, a casing including hinged side elements movable outwardly and from each other to open position, hinged top elements movable toward each other to open position, and means for moving the side and top elements to open orclosed position simultaneously.

2. In a device of the class described, a casing including side elements movable outwardly and away from each other to open position, a top formed in sections hingedly mounted and movable toward each other to open position, pivoted arms connected with each of said movable elements, and means connected with the pivoted arms for moving all of the elements at one time.

3. In a device of the class described, a casing including hinged side elements movable outwardly to an open position, and'away.

from each other, a top including hinged elements movable toward each other to open position, a vertically movable element, pivoted arms connected with said element last named and with the side elements of the casing, and means connected with the vertical element and slidable with reference thereto, and having connection with the hinged members of the top, permitting said members last named and the outwardly movable side members to be operated at one time.

4. In a device of the class described, a cabinet including a bottom member, end walls, permanently connected lower side walls, upper side walls hingedly connected with those first named, a top formed in section hingedly mounted, and means for throwing the sections of the top upward and toward each other to open position and throwing the upper hinged side walls to open position, in one operation.

5. In a device of the class described, a cabinet including a bottom, end walls, side walls permanently connected with the end walls and the bottom, upper side walls hingedly connected with the lower side walls first named, a top formed in sections, hingedly mounted, a tray for said receptacle and mounted between the side walls first named, and mechanism for operating all of said hinged elements.

6. In a device ofthe class described, a casing including hinged side walls outwardly movable away from each other to open position, top sections hingedly mounted and movable upwardly toward each other to open position, elements pivotally connected with the to sections and with the side walls,

and a vertlcally movable rod for operating a at one time all of said pivotally connected elements.
