R. THUM.
GUN.
APPLICATION man MAH. s, 1921.

JMW/who@ Huaozph Thum PATENT OFFICE.
RUDOLF THUM. OF BALDIN, NEW YORK.
GUN.
Application filed March 5, 1921.
To all 207mm it may concern.:
it known that I. RUiwLr THUM, a citizen ot' the United States. and resident oi' the town of Baldwin.countyofQueens, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Guns.
This invention relates to improvements in guns and the principal object of the invention resides in the provision of a toy made in the image of a fire arm and arranged to shoot a projectile upon the pulling ot a trigger.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a device wherein the power is obtained through the utilization of an elastic member which may either be a band or a flat strip of elastic material. y
Still another object of the invention is to provide a device which may be easily and cheaply constructed of any suitable material such as wood, and in which scrap pieces may be used as the projectile.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a means for retaining the projectile in the barrel which means also acts as a guide for the elastic member to cause the same to engage the projectile when released.
With these and other objects in view ihe invention consists of a novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts which will be fully set forth in the following specification. claimed and illustrated in the ac companying drawings in which Figure 1, is a side view in elevation of the gun illustrating the saine in position to discharge the projectile.
Fig. 2, is a fragmentary longitudinal sectional view through the butt end of the gun,
Fig. 3, is a front view in elevation of the gun and Fig. 4, is a rear view of Fig. 3.
Referring to the drawings in detail the numeral 5 designates the gun barrel which is formed integrally with the butt 6 which is shaped as illustrated in the drawings to represent a pistol grip. The barrel 5 is provided on its upper side with a longitudinal groove .7' which may be V shaped or halt round according to the desire of the user.
Formed near the forward end of the barrel and extending upwardly from the under side is a slot 8 to receive the elastic 9 which may be either a continuous band or a strip of elastic material and in the latter event the Spccicatioii of Letters Patent.
Patented NWS, 1921. Serial No. 449,656.
ends of the strip are placed side by side and upon stretching the overlapped portions their cross sectional areas will be reduced to such a degree as to permit the band to be readily slipped into the slot and upon contraction of said portions it will be obvious that a frictional contact between the wall s of the slot will effectively hold the strip in place.
Pivotally connected in the butt end of the gun at a point intermediate its extreme rear end and the point where it joins the barrel is a U shaped member 10 provided intermediate the ends of its legs with inwardly extending members 11 which are arranged to frictionally engage the sides ot the butt in such a manner as to hold said member against accidental movement. i
As illustrated in the drawings the ends of the legs. of the U shaped member opposite those joining the bight portion thereof, are extended into an opening in the butt to provide a pivot and one of said inward extensions may project through the opening` ttor a greater distance than the other in order to provide a pivot for the releasing element 12, the lower end oi' which extends downwardly to provide a trigger 13. This releasingr member is arranged in such a manner as to osrillate longitudinally in a slot 14 formed in said butt and it will be obvious that upon exerting pull on the trigger the said releasing member will engage the U shaped meinber to move the same forward against the tension of the frictionally engaging portions 1l. Y W
In order to properly guide the elastic element against the projectile and to hold said projectile against accidental displacement from the gun barrel, there is provided a suitable guard 15 which consists of a single piece ot wire looped upon itself and provided at its forward end with a pair of downwardly extending legs 16 arranged to engage in grooves at opposite sides of the gun barrel adjacent the slot S. It is preferable that these grooves be arranged slightly in the rear of said slot so that when the elastic member is stretched they will Contact with the legs 16 and serve to assist in holding said guard in place.
While in the foregoing there has been shown and described a preferred embodiment of this invention, it is to be understood that certain minor changes in the details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed is 1. A device of the class described comprising a barrel, a projectile adapted to be discharged therefrom, means for discharging said projectile and a guard associated with the barrel in such a manner as to provide a guide for the discharging means, and to releasably hold said projectile in place.
2. A device of the class described comprising a grooved barrel, a projectile adapted to rest in the grooves in the barrel, an elastic member 11 for forcing the projectile from the barrel, a. pivoted member for holding the elastic member in position to discharge the projectile, means adapted to engage said pivoted member for releasing said elastic member, and a guard to guide said elastic member into contact with the projectile.
3. A toy gun comprising a grooved barrel, a projectile adapted to rest in the groove ot the barrel, said barrel being provided with a slot on its under side adjacent its forward end, an elastic discharging means seated in said slot and adapted to be drawn rearwardly behind the projectile, means pivoted to the gun for releasably holding said elastic means in extended position, a trigger adapted to engage said pivoted means, and a guard associated with the barrel for guiding said elastic means against the projectile.
4. A toy gun comprising a barrel, a grip at the rear end of the barrel, said barrel having a groove in its upper side, a projectile adapted to rest in said groove, an elastic member secured adjacent the forward end of the barrel, pivoted means frictionally engaging the opposite sides of the gun and adapted to releasably hold said elastic member in extended position, along the sides oi the barrel in such a manner that its bight portion Will sweep the top of the barrel and engage the projectile, a trigger member adapted to engage said ivoted Vmeans to thereby release said elastic member, and a guard adapted to releasably hold said projectile and to guide said elastic means into contact with said projectile.
Signed in the city, county and State of New York, this 29 day of March, 1921.
