Description

J. G. WRIGHT AND H. F. BENNETT.
DOOR STRIP. APPLICATION FILED JAN-20.1921.
Patented Nov. 8, 1921.
UNITED- STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN G. WEIGHT AND HARRY F. BENNETT, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS; SAID BENNETT ASSIGNOR TO SAID.WRIGHT.
DOOR-STRIP.
7 To all whom it may concem:
Be it known that we, JOHN G. WRIGHT and HARRY F. BENNETT, citizens of the United States,.residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improveing is a description.
Uur invention relates to improvements in ments in Door-Strips, of which the followdoor strips and more particularly to a device'for closing the open space between the bottom of the'door and the floor or doorsill in order to keep out the elements such as 'wind, rain, snow, etc;
Another object of our invention is to provide'a device as above described which shall be self-operating to close the opening whenever thedoor is closed and which requires no manual v aid whatsoever.
lVith a device of our invention applied to a door, a room can be easily kept warm and clean, for the strip preventsany'dust from lowing in and prevents the heat in the room from passing to the outdoors through said opening. 7
Another object of our invention is to provide a device as above described, which will be simple, durable, economical, compact, efiicient, and satisfactory for use wherever found applicable.
Many other objects and advantages of the construction herein shown and described will be obvious to those skilled in the art from the disclosure herein given.
To this end our invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and combination of parts herein shown and described and more particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings, wherein like reference characters indicate like or corresponding parts; 7
Figure 1 represents our device as applied to a door, the door being shown in its closed position;
Fig. 2 is a view similar to that Fig. 1, the door being open;
Fig. 3 is a vertical section partly in elevation;
Fig. 4 is a section on the 3; and 3 Fig. 5 is a section similar to Fig. 4, showing the device when the door is open.
shown in line of Fig.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Nova 8, 192] Application filed January 20, 1921. Serial No. 438,616.
comprises a pair of telescopic or nesting slide members 1 and 2, the member 1 made of a strip of metal preferably bent into a U-shape, as shown in Figs. 4 and 5, and having parallel spaced legs 3 connected by a web, said member being secured to the door by screws or equivalent means 5 which extend through the legs 3.
' The member 2 is also preferably of U-shaped cross-section and comprises spaced legs 6 connected by a web, said member 2 being of a length substantially equal to the width of the door. The member 2 is suspended within the slide memberl by means of links 7 or equivalent means for the purpose, said links being pivoted at one end to the member 1 by pivot pins 8 and being pivoted at the other end to the member 2 by pivot pins 9, the upper web of said member 2 being slotted to receive the links 7, said slots being substantially of a length equal to the length of the links, whereby the member 2 may be swung upwardly and longitudinally of the member 1, so that the web of the member 2 approaches the web of the member 1, as shown in Fig. 3.
\Vhen the member 2 has been moved longitudinally of its guidemember 1, (to the left as shown in Fig. 2) when the door is opened, one of its ends, as 10, will project beyond the edge of the door, so that when the door is being closed, the path of movement of the end 10 will be across the (left hand) vertical jamb B, so that the end 10 bearing against this jamb will cause the member 2 to he slid or swung (to the right) to its closed position. Inasmuch as this swinging movement will be in a circular are about the pivot pins 8, the member 2 will be forced downwardly as well as longitudinally into its lowermost position.
A strip of rubber, felt, fabric, or other suitable and yieldable material 14, is preferably positioned on the lower end of the member 2 so that it will adjust itself to any irregularities in the surface of the floor or sill, and prevent the wearing of the 'floor 2 when the door is opened, and will cause 7 any suitable material may be secured to the 7 the member 2 to moveupwardly and to the left and out of engagement with the floor or sill when the, door is opened.
When the door is being closed the end 10 of themember 2 will be pushed longitudinally and downwardly of the guide member 1 on account of its bearing contact with the amb B, so that the opening between'the bottom of the doorand the floor will be closcdp If desired, a wearing plate 15 of vertical jamb near its bottom and against which the end 10'of the strip member will bear. 1
Having thus described our invention it is obvious, that various immaterial mod1fica= tions may be made in the same without departing from the spirit of our invention; a
hence we do not wish tobeunderstoodas :limiting ourselves to the exact form, ar-' rangement, constructlon and combinatlon of parts herein shown and described or uses mentioned. v
signed om-names in the What we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: p c
The combination with a stationary door jamb and a movable door whose bottom is spaced above'the'fioor, ofa device for' elos-ing the opening between the door and the floor, said device comprising a pair of longltu- 'din ally extending U-shaped telescopic sheet metal members, one of which is secured to the bottom ofthe door, the otherof which i is movable longitudinally and vertically of said first mentioned member,spaced links pivotally connecting said members together, the web of. said movableinember being slotted to receive said links, a strip of yield able material removablyjsecured in said mo vablemember "between its opposed inner wa Us and projecting therebeyond, a spring connecting said members, and urgingfisaid movablemcmber to swingin an are upwardly and longitudinally'v about i the pivots of said links to project its end beyond said door and-into the path of the door jamb, whereby said projecting portion vmay be engaged bythe door jambduring theidoor closnre to effect theclosing of saidopeningr In testimony whereof, wehave hereunto subscribing witnesses.
