Description

'1. MnEw. Machines for Cutting Hump-Locks. N0. 139,594- Patented`lune351873.
Fifi- PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN MGGREW, OF BAVENSWOOD, WEST VIRGINIA.
IMPROVEMENT iN MACHINES FOR CUTTING-'HOQP-LOGKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 139,594, dated June 3, 1873; application iiled February 19, 1873.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN MCGREW, of Ravenswood, in the county of Jackson and State of West Virginia, have invented a new Improvement in Machines for Cutting Hoop- Locks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification.
The invention consists in the improvement of machines for cutting hoop-locks, substantially as hereinafter fully described and pointed out in the claims.
Figure l is a side elevation. Fig. 2 is a vertical section in line w x of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section, and Fig. 4 is a detail view of the gage.
A is the table which supports the workingparts of machine; B, a raised platform screwed down thereto; and C uprights, with the detachable cap C. The latter allows the toolholder to be easily inserted or removed at any time. In these uprights are grooves or ways c c, in which slide the tongues d d of toolholder D. The latter is notched on the inside at d', so as to receive the bent double Shanks e e of the obliquely-arran ged cutters or knives E. The shanks may be made of the same length and slotted so as to be adjusted above one another and also to project successively at a greater distance out, thusenabling each to shave oft' a part only of Vthe wood which is necessary to be taken out to form the notch; or, as shown in the drawing, these shanks e may be made larger for eachshccessive upper knife. By constructing the knives with these bent shanks they can be rmly supported in `the grooves of holder, andyet easily removed and replaced. F is a gage having the notch f obliqned and shaped to correspond to the cutters. This gage rests against .a spring, f and is slided back thereagainst and under the platform B by theinclines G G, which are attached to the sides of the movable toolholder D. 'li is a leverl pivoted to the frame at one end, resting on a spring, h, on the lower side, near the middle, and attached nea-r the same point on the upper side, by a link, ht, to the tool-holder D. y
By this construction and arrangement of parts the machine is enabled to operate as follows: The hoop rests against platformv B in a suitable groove, b, thereof, and on the notched gage F. As the knives come down the rst cuts out an angular shaving, when the inclines cause the gage to recede a little,
and then stop to allow an additional one to be cut by the next knife. Again, the` same operation takes place when the hoop is notched at one end. The opposite side of the other end being notched in the sameway, the hooplock is formed. 5
This machine has been practically tested and is found to work with greatfacility, rapidity, and uniformity, and its parts subject to wear or accident are also easily taken ont, repaired, and replaced, or new ones substituted. n
Having thus described my "invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is -1 1. The series of vertically-reciprocating knives E, combined with an intermittently and horizontally moving gage, F, as andfor the purpose set forth.
2. The arrangement of the inclines on reciprocating knife-holder, so as to operate the sliding gage in the manner described. Y.
The above specification of my invention signed by me this 14th day of February, A.
