Specification of Letters Patent.

To allwhom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IVALDEMAR Kors, a citizen of the United States, residing in the borough of Manhattan, city, county, and State of New York. have invented an Improvement in Gas-Masks, of which the following is a specification.
In the early production of gas masks, the same were made of flexible material which was therefore collapsible in the use of the mask, and the masks were provided with nose clips to prevent .the wearer from breathing through the nose and also with mouth pieces to be held in the mouth and gripped by the teeth, the mouth pieces being connected to the hose or intake tube so that the wearer was compelled to breathe through the mouth. ,In the further development of gas masks, the hood or body of the mask was molded out of suitable material over the necessary form in order to be adapted to fit the face of the wearer and to be sufliciently rigid to be non-collapsible. In
- masks of this type, the nose clips and mouth pieces were dispensed with and the hose tube was connected to a deflector for directing the incoming air in such a way as to cause it to strike the interior of the lenses of the eye pieces so as to clarify the same and keep them clear. There were obviously many disadvantages from a manufacturing standpoint in the molded gas masks and the object of my present invention is to overcome these disadvantages by producing a gas mask from; suitable materials worked up from blanks which are so formed and the parts connected as to make the mask substantially non-collapsible and at the same time of such a shape as to properly. fit the face of the wearer. In so doingfIpreferably employ an outer blank of relatively stifi' material and an inner blank of relatively flexible material. The outer blank is superimposed upon or otherwise connected with the inner blank and connected thereto and the blanks. stamped out with gores or V-shaped incisions in the required positions and the parts thus made suitably connected as hereinafterdescribed to form the hood.

Referring particularly to the drawing, .it will be seen that in carrying out this invention, I employ a blank or sheet of material indicated at 10, and this is preferably a relatively stifl impermeable rubberized fabric such as rubberized duck or sail cloth. I also employ a blank or sheet of material indicated at 11 which is made of flexible material, such for example, as double stockinet. The blank 11 is appreciably larger than" the blank 10 and the blank 10 is preferably superimposed upon the blank 11 in substantially the position shown in Fig. 3, and the parts cemented to one another and also stitched. along the edge of the blank 10 as indicated by the lines of stitching 12, or as will be understood, these blanks may be otherwise suitably connected to each other so that the blank 10 in use is the outer blank and the blank 11 the inner blank. After the blanks 10 and 11 are thus secured to one another, the eye. piece openings 13 are suitably cut therein and preferably slitted for appreciable distances as indicated at 1 1. In the blanks there is also cut an opening"15 for the hose tube of the mask and an opening 16 for connecting the flutter valve in position in thehood of the mask. Furthermore, in the mask blanks as herein before described there are also cut darts or or gores or ll-shaped incisions 17 and 18 adjacent the eye piece sections of the hood, and darts or gores or V- shaped incisions 19 and 20 in the lower or chin section of the blank.
The edges of the darts or goresare then zigzagged as indicated at 21 and 22 in Fig. 2, the former representing the zigzag edges in the eye piece darts or gores and the latter the zigzag edges of the gores in the chin section, and as illustrated in Fig. 2, these zigzag edges of the gores are brought together and secured to one another in any suitable manner to form the, hood of the mask. The edge of the blank 10 is then fit- 15 and the flutter valve 28 secured in theopening 16. Also interiorly, the'hood of the mask maybe provided with a band or lining secured to or adjacent theedge'thereof to form the joint between-the hood and the face of the wearer, and if. necessary," this form-of mask may also be provided with a chin piece. v
It will be understood that the relatively stiff impermeable fabric used in the blank 10 when the mask is made as hereinbefore described, gives the hood suflicient rigidity to be substantially non-collapsible, and furthermore, that any suitable connections may be made for the hose tube and flutter valve and. that any desired type of harness-maybe employed for securing the'hood or'body of the mask in position on the head of the wearer. A jm j V I claim as-my invention:
1. A gas mask made of blanks of flexible material, superimposed toreinforce the body of the hood of the mask and thereby prevent the entire front section of the hood from collapsingwhen in use and also to provide a border section'which is sufliciently yielding to permit a gas tight fit to be made between the same and the head of the wearer, the said blanks being provided with symmetrically'placed incisions in the edges mo els? thereof which are connected by a suitable joint to completely form the hood of the mask.
