Description

w E. N. HUMPHREY.
BELT BUCKLE.
APPLICATION FILED JULY 22. 1921.

ERNEST N. HUIVCPHREY, OF NEW BRITAIN, CONNECTICUT.
BELT-BUCKLE.
Application filed. July 22, 1921.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ERNEST N. HUM- PHREY, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at New Britain, Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Belt- Buckle, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to buckles of a type particularly useful in connection with belts. The object is to simplify and cheapen the construction without sacrifice to quality or efliciency.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a buckle in position to receive the free end of a belt;
Fig. 2 is a sectional View showing the gripping member in position to permit adjustment of the belt; r
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2, showing the gripping member gripping the belt, and
Fig. 4 is a perspective view showing parts of the buckle relatively separated.
1 represents a front plate having rearwardly extending flanges 2-2 at the upper and lower edges forming a belt passage between them. 3 represents a plate pivotally connected at 44l near the rear edges of the flanges 22 and intermediate the ends of the same. At the outer end of the plate 3 is pivotally connected another plate 5. This last mentioned plate 5 has belt'gripping teeth 66 which coact with the body of the plate 5 in fixedly securing one end of the belt to saidlever. The other end of'the plate 5 is provided with an offset portion 7 which, when the lever is pinched down on the fixed end of the belt, stands close to the pivotal portion 4 of the plate 3 so as to form in effect a cam, which cam operates to pinch the adjustable end of the belt tightly against the back of the plate 1 when the belt and buckle are in operative position as shown in Fig. 3. Manifestly, a strain on the fixed end of'the belt tends to hold. the cam 7in position against any possible accidental displacement. By this very simple arrangement of parts, the same may be'very quickly made and assembled. 8 representsa belt. 99 are ears which may be provided at each side edge of plate 3 for engaging the side edges of the fixed end of the belt. By shift- Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 486,674.
' plate 3, the degree to which the cam is offset from the pivotal mounting of said plate 3 may be varied to adapt the sameto belts of different thickness.
I claim 1. In a buckle, a front plate having rear I wardly extending flanges at the upper and lower edge, a plate pivotally connected be tween said flanges, another plate pivotally connected to the free end of the first plate and coacting therewith to grip one end of a belt, a cam near the free end of the last mentioned plate, said camlying adjacent to the pivotal portion of the first mentioned plate when the parts are assembled with a belt whereby said cam will operate to grip the adjustable end of a belt between it and the back of a front plate.
2. In a buckle, a front plate having rearwardly extending flanges at the upper and lower edge, a plate pivotally connected be tween said flanges, another plate pivotally connected to the free end of the first plate and coacting therewith to grip one end of a belt, a cam near the free end of the last mentioned plate, said cam lying adjacent to the pivotal portion of the first mentioned plate when the parts are assembled with a belt whereby said cam will operate to grip the adjustable end of a belt between it and the back of a front plate, ears at the edges of the first mentioned plate arranged to engage the adjacent side edges of a belt resting thereon.
3. In a belt buckle, a front plate, a rearwardly extending flange at the upper and lower edges thereof, a member pivotally con nected at one end between said flanges, another member pivotally connected at one end to thefree end of the first mentioned member. the last mentioned member having an offset at its free end arranged to lie adjacent to the pivotal part of the first mentioned member when said members are folded together whereby said offset will function as 'a cam and cooperate with the front plate in holding the adjustable end of a strap belt in place.
