R. 0. PFE FFERLE. BOX OR RECEPTACLE. APPLICATION FILED DEC-15,1919.
Patggited Nov. 1, 1921.
li'iiiiiiiii" PATENT OFFICE.
RAYMOND O. PFEFFERLE, 0F MADELIA, MINNESOTA.
BOX 03 RECEPTACLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 1,1921.
Application filed December 15, 1919. Serial No. 345,098.
This invention relate to tin boxes or receptacles, and the primary object of the invention is to provide an improved means for securing a label thereon.
The ordinary tin boxes now in use by druggists for the reception of ointment,
salve or the like will not receive a label, 2'. 6., the mucilage on the label will not adhere to the tin and it is therefore an object of the invention to provide an improved means for associating a label with a tin box without necessitating the gluing of the label thereon.
Another object of the invention i to provide an improvedbox embodying an annular retaining flange or frame carried by the lid of the box for the reception of a label, the box having means for permitting the ready insertion of the label between the flange and the lid.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved means formed on the lid of a tin box forthe reception of a label which is so arranged in relation to the box that the. displacement of the label will be eliminated. V
A further object of the invention is to provide a tin. box having label receiving means formed thereon which is also arranged to carry atransparent protector 1 plate for preventing the soiling ofthe label and thereby permit the matter printed on the label to be read at all times.
A still further object of the invention is to provide an improved box for the reception of salve, ointment or the like, which is so constructed as to provide a double sealing closure, thereby absolutely preventing the leakage of the material from the box.
A still further object of the invention is to provide an improved box of the above character which is durable and efiicient in use, one that is simple and easy to manufacture, and one WhlCh can be placed upon the market at a reasonable cost.
Other objects of the invention will appear in the following detailed description taken in connection wlth the drawings, forming a.
part of this specification, and in which drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved box.
Fig. 2 is a central diametric section through the same.
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2, showing the box without the transverse protector plate.
Fig. 4 i a horizontal section through the box, andv Fig. 5 is a plan view of the improved box.
Referring to the drawings in detail, wherein similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the letter A indicates the box having the improved means B for the reception of the label C.
The box A includes a body 10 which as shown is of cylindrical formation and in cludes the side wall 11 having intermediate its upper and lower edges a laterally projecting rib 12, which forms a seat for the lower edge of the lid or cover, which has associated therewith the label holding means l3.
The lid includes a circular imperforate plate 14- having a depending annular flange 15 which is adapted to seat or rest upon the upper edge of the side wall of the box body 10, and the meeting point between the annular flange and disk 14 is inclined downwardly and outwardly to provide an inclined guide face 16, the purpose of which will be hereinafter more fully described. The plate 14 and flange 15 have associated therewith the frame 17 which includes the annular side wall 18, which is arranged to be soldered or otherwise secured to the flange 15 and is adapted to extend below the same so as to engage the rib 12. The depending side wall 18 has its upper edge bent inwardly to provide the inwardly extending annular retaining flange 19 which is arranged in spaced relation to the plate 14 so as to form a. pocket therebetween for the reception of the label C, and the top plate 14 and its flange 15 and the frame 17 forms the means B for holding the label C in position. The cylindrical side wall 18 of the frame 17 is provided adjacent its upper edge with a slot 20 which has a length less than half of the circumference of the box, so as provide a restricted opening to prevent the displacement of the label 0 from the pocket The lot being of less length than half of or space between the frame and plate 147.
the circumference of the lid makes it necessary to slightly bend or spring the label into 7 an abutment for preventing the accidental movement of the label through the slot. In
above the slot 20. The label C may be made Fig.3 isadapted for granular or powdered position, and after the same has been wholly inserted within the slot, the label,-owing to its inherent resiliency will resume its normal position. The upper wall of the slot 20 lie in a plane with or below'the upper surface of the plate 14 and thus the'upper end of the cylindrical side wall 18 forms positioning the label in the slot, the inclined surrace 167for1ns a means for guiding the label between the frame 17 and the top wall 18 and it. will be seen that when the, label is placed in position theedge of the same will spring up into engagement with the inner urface of the flange 19 and of paper or any preferred material and when the box isto contain salve, ointment or other oily substance, a transparent flexible plate 21 is provided of circular formation for preventing the label from becoming soiled] and unreadable. VThe transparent plate 21 is interposed between the label C.
and the frame v17;
7 In Fig. 3 is shown the "plate dispensed withand in tlllS fOll'Il a label of'slightly greater thickness than the label shown in Fig. 2 is used or if so desired ,the framel'i and-the top wall 14 may be arranged slightlycloser to each other. The box shown in substance which will not soil the outer face of thebox or the label.
Fromlthe foregoing description it can be seen that an improved box is provided hav ing means for receiving a label which elimie nates the necessity of pasting or gluing the label tothe box lid, the box lid being so constructed as to absolutely prevent the displacement of'the label or the tearing of the V outer edge of the label.
- 'lid has a two point contact with the body of -The lid is alsoconstructed so as to-provide a double closure for the box so as to prevent the. leakagejofmaterial between the lid and.
body of the box, and itwillbe seen that the the-box cover, an inwardly extending flange 1 arrangedfin' superposed relation to the box cover and adapted to project forwardly and overhang the box cover to provide therebe tween a compartmentfor the reception'o f the'label, the flange of said frame having a slot therein of less width than. thediameter of said label, whereby'the label will have to be sprunginto position.
2. A boxcover comprising a body plate, a depending flange formedon the. periphery of the plate, a label holding frame carried by the depending flange including an annular flange arranged in spaced relation-to said body plate to provide therebetween space forthe reception of the label, and a de-' pending flange receiving the flange'for'med onthe body plateand extending below the same, the last mentioned flange having a slot'formed therein of "less width than the diameter ofthe label and arranged below the plane of'jsaid body plate whereby the accidental -displace nent of the label through said slot will be prevented. i
3'. A box cover comprising a top plate,
an inclined guide flange formed on thel periphery oflthe topplate,"a depending retaining flange carried by the guide flange, an open frame arrangedin superposed relation'to the'top plate and extendingbeyon'd the plane of the inclined guide flange, vand .a depending flange formed on the periphery" of, the open] frame rec'eivingthe retaining flange and extending below the lower edge of the frame, the last mentioned flange hav ing a label'receiving" slot. formed therein arranged-in a plane below the top plate and 1 leading to saidlguide flange. r V
