MACHINE FOR THE PRODUCTION OF METAL TAGS SUCH AS USED ON LACES.
T0 to ham it may concern Be it known that we, GEORGE EDWARD VVALKER, SAMUEL HERBERT WVALKER, and FRANK HEWITT, British subjects, residing at Prestwich, county of Lancaster, England, Southport, county of Lancaster, England, and Radcliffe, county of Lancaster, England, respectively, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machlnes for the Production of Metal Tags Such as Used on Laces, of which the following is a specification.
cut off, a reciprocating punch and cutter to shear off the desired length of metal and force it into the forming die, and a row of punche or needles reciprocating in the opposite direction to perforate the tag and give it a serrated or roughened internal surface The invention will be fully described with reference to the accompanying drawings.

The machine is constructed with a bed or frame A of suitable design to which is rigidly attached a die former-A. To one side of the die former A is mounted a reciprocating bar B sliding in suitable guides and to the other side of the die former A a Second reciprocating bar C.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 1, 1921. Serial No. 357,497.
To the free end of the reciprocating bar B a cutting or shearing tool D, a reciproeating punch B and a measuring or distance plate 6 are fitted to move to and from the die former A with the bar, and to the free end of the reciprocating bar C a series of needle punches C are fitted to move to and fro with it. Holes are formed in the die former A and in the punch B to receive the needle punches C. Instead of needle punches, a tool to indent the tag maybe employed.
Above the die A and punch B a magazine or chute E is mounted to deliver the tag material to the machine. The chute E is preferably suspended from a pivot at e on an arm or bracket 6 to permit it to swing to and fro with the punch and at its lower end is carried in a sliding guide piece F being drawn back to normal position by a spring f.
The reciprocating bar B and with it the punch B and shearing tool D is moved in one direction by a cam G or by an eccentric crank or other menas on a driving shaft g and in the opposite direction by the spring 9, and the reciprocating bar C is connected to the bar B by a connecting rod H and lever 72 to cause it to move simultaneously but in the opposite direction so that as they move the punch B and needle piuiches C approach and recede from one another.
In operation a thin strip of metal or other material is fed from the chute E on to the measuring plate 12 preferably fallin by gravit On the forward movement 0 the bars and C the shearing tool D cuts off the length of metal to form the tag and the punch B forces it into the interior of the die former A giving it a U shape. lVhile still held by the die former A and the punch B the needle punches C enter from the other side and form a number of holes in the tag, forming a rough surface in the interior. When the punche recede the finished tag falls out through the bottom of the die former A.
The die former may be of any suitable shape for any particular form or shape of tag.
What we claim as our invention and desire to protect by Letters Patent is A tag forming machine constructed with a fixed or stationary die former, a reciprocating bar carrying a cutting tool and punch at one side of the die former, a reciprocating bar carrying needle punches at the other side of thedie former, the two bars being connectedto move simultaneously in opposite directions to approach and recede from one another, and an oscillating chute to deliver the tag material in front of: the die former, means to suspend the chute and means to cause it to swing to and fro with the punch substantially as described.
