ASSIGNOR T0 J OHN BOYLE & COM- A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
FASTENING DEVICE.
Appllcation'flled January 19, 1921.
, To all whom it may concem:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK E. MARKERT, a citizen of the United States of America, resi-din at Number 579 East 161st street, borough of the Bronx, city and State of New York, have invented certain new and usefulImprovements in Fastening'De vices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention-relates to improvements in separable fastening devices and is especially adapted for use as an awning fastener, but is also capable of being used as'a fastener for other devices made offlexible material having reinforced edges and likely to be subjected to heavy strain and hard usage such as carriage curtains, door hangings, and the like.
It is an object of the invention to provide a device of the character described which will be simple,,and, therefore, economical in its construction, but at the same time thoroughly practical and reliable as a means for accomplishing its intended purpose.
In the drawings illustrating certain forms of the invention,
Figure 1 is a view in cross section, showing the invention applied as an awning fastener, as a means for securing the top of the awning to the head of a window frame.
Fig. 2 is a view of thesame in front ele vation.
Fig. 3 is a view of the'blank fromwhich the fastener, illustrated in Fig.1, is made.
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the same form of the invention, the prongs having been cut and-bent in readiness to be secured to the edge of the awning or other device to which thefastener is to be applied.

Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 1, 1921. Serial No. 438,398.
Fig. 10 is a face view of a fastener of a second modified form, illustrated as applied to supported.
Fig. 11 is a section on the line 11-11 of F 1g. 10.
Referring more particularly to Figs. 1 to 5, the preferred form of the invention will first be'described as applied to an awning 20 having a fold at 21 inclosing a reinforcing element 22.
In Figs. 1 and 2, a fastening device 23, which may be made of steel or any other approprlate material, is provided with a longitudinal slot 24 adapted to be passed over a screw-eye 25 secured in a head 26 of a window frame. a
The fastening device is also provided with prongs 27, 28 and 29 (Fig. 4), by which the fastener may be secured to the edge of the awning. The fastener is also provided with a notch 30 in the upper wall of the slot 24., the prong 29 being formed of material cut from the slot 24 and notch 30, as indicated in broken lines in the blank, Fig. 8.
To secure the fastening device to the awning, the prongs 27, 28 are passed through the fabric just below the reinforcing strip, and turned down against the surface with their points directed toward the margin. The prong 29 is at the same time passed over and around the margin of the awning and bent down against its surface with its end directed away from the margin. In this manner, the fastening device is very firmly and positively secured to the edge of the awning, the strain being distributed over a considerable portion of the same by means of the inclosed reinforcing element.
To apply the fastening device to the head of the window frame, thescrew-eye 25 is given a quarter turn to a horizontal position. The slot 24 is then passed over the screw-eye and the screw-eye returned to the position illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2. The notch'30 drops over the shank of the screw-eye and forms a satisfactory centering means, capable of preventing undesirable endwise movement of the attached awning.
In Figs. 6 to 9, inclusive, is illustrated a modified form of fastening device 23 having prongs 27, 28 corresponding to the the same being the article to be prongs 27, 28 of Fig. 4. In this "form, however, in place of the prongs 29 there is provided a pron 29 out from the lower part of the blank Fig. 8), and turned upwardly against the body of the fastener, and forwardly as illustrated in Fig. 9, in readiness to be passed over the margin of the awning. This form of the device is alsoprovided with a slot 24: and notch 30 corresponding to the slot and notch of the form illustrated in Fig. 4c.
The device in the form illustrated in Fig.
'9, is attached to the edge of an awning 20,
and the prongs turned down against the part inclosing the reinforcing element 22', as illustrated in Figs. 6 and 7. It is then adapted for attachment to the screw-eye or other appropriate means of support, in exactly the same manner as has been described with reference to the form illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2.
In Figs..1O and 11 is illustrated another .modified form, which differs from that illustrated in Figs. 1 to 5, inclusive, only in that the fastening member is provided with a circular opening 31 adapted to receive a rope or cable as a means of support, instead of the screw-eye illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2. It
may be observed thatin this form ofthe 7 It will be understood that the invention is 7 not limited in its application to the particular forms herein disclosed, but is intended to include all such other forms and modifications as fall within the scope of the appended claims.
