GOLF-BALL-MARKIN G DEVICE.
To all whom t may concern.
Be it known that I, ADOLPH G. HUPFEL, a citizen of theUnited States, resident of Reno, county of Vashoe, and State of Nevada, have invented new and useful Improvements in Golf-Ball-Marking Devices,
of which the following is a specification, the' principle of the invention being herein explained and the best mode in which I have contemplated applying that principle, so as to distinguish it from other inventions.
My invention relates to golf-ball marking devices, the object being to produce a device of said character, the construction of which may be economically effected and which will be eflicient in the performance of itsfunction. The saidY invention consists of means hereinafter fully described and par` ticularly pointed out in the claims.
I am aware that golf-ball marking devices have heretofore been constructed and patented, but the said devices have either been sol complicated asto make the expense of production prohibitively great, yor they have been of a character which, while simple, distort the ball and are consequently obliectionable. In carryin out my invention, I have provided an oscillatory type-carry ing member which coperates with a base upon which a ball may roll, to impress, during rolling contact, the required marking, the said oscillatory member being so mounted and constructed that the types may be readily insertedor removed, and the said base being also adjustable so as to permit the device to be used in connection ywith l different sizes of balls.
The annexed drawing and the following description set forth in detail certain means embodying my invention, the disclosed means, however, constituting but one of the various mechanical forms in which the principle of the invention may be applied.

The illustrated embodiment of my invention comprises a main frame-member l; an oscillatory type-carrying lever 2 mounted upon said main frame-member; an adjustable base 3; and an inking roller 4 mounted upon said frame.
The frame-member l consists of two U- shaped and similar rplates 5 5, which are secured to each other in parallelism by rivets 6 6, and other separating and securing means, as will hereinafter appear, but removed from each other to form an intermediate space 8, Fig. 3.'
The upper end Vof the frame-member is widened, as shown, and formed `with an inner convex surface 9,- whose curvature is circular and has its Ycenter in the axis of the journal-screw l0 upon which the lever 2 is mounted. This screw, as shown in Fig. l, is placed `near the extremity of the upper end portion of the'frame-member, and is shouldered, as at 1l, its intermediateportion 12 `acting as the bearing for the said lever, andalso acting asa means for holding together and separating the upper ends of the plates 5-45, seeFig. 6.
The lever, as'shown, is mounted between said plates andupon said jonrnalscrew. and is provided with a laterally placed 'stoppin or screw 13, which is removable, but which, while'in place, limits the oscillation of the lever, the twoV extreme and so limited positions beingrv shown in full lines in Figs. 1 and 2' respectively. The outer end of arm 14 of the lever is intersected by a type-recess 15 l,heading end walls 16-16 converging toward the axis of the lever, as shown in Fig. 5. When the stop 13 is removed, the lever maybe swung into the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, in which position the recess 15 clears the frame-member and is thus exposed so that the types may be inserted laterally into or removed from such recess. Each of the types is provided at one side with a slot 16, and the one side of the lever armis similarly slotted as at 17- 17, Figs. 5 and 7, to receive a fixed wire holder 18, having two bent ends 19-19 for insertion and riveted into small holes 20- 20, whereby the types are prevented from falling out radially. The depth of the lever is such that it will correspond with the depth of the space 8, but move freely therein, the inset position of the wire holder 18 "same degree of convergence as the end wallsy 16C-16 of the recess 15, so that they lit snugly and securely therein and are of a length such that during their travel they will project beyond the convex surface 9, as shown in Fig. 2. In the normal or printing operation of the device, the stop 13 isin place, so that the lever does not reach a position in which types are exposed laterally excepting only at their ends.
An iinking roller 4 isV mounted in the frame-member between the plates, as shown in Fig.' 5", and lies in the normalpath of movement of the faces of the types,'so that the latter will be inked upon each oscillatory movement of the lever.

Assuming the parts 'to be in the position shown in Fig. 2, the distance from the'base 3 to the curved surface 9. is substantially equal tothe diameter of a standard f loater golf-ball. Y A ball being now inserted in the space between said base and surface, as

In a golf-ball marking device, the combination of a main frame; a base-member mounted upon said frame and upon which a ball may roll; a type-carrying member movably mounted upon said frame and adapted to coperate with said base to impress said type upon such ball; said type being laterally removable from said member; and type confining means carried by said frame for preventing lateral movement of said type.
7 In a golf-ball marking device, the combination of a main U-shaped frame-member comprising two plates and'suitable separating and securing means therefor; a lever mounted on one arm of said frame-member and between said plates; marking types mounted on said lever; and a base mounted upon the other arm of said frame member opposite the said lever, and upon which a ball is adapted to roll.
8. In a golf-ball marking device, the combination of a main U-shaped frame-member comprising two plates and suitable separating and securing means therefor; a lever mounted on one arm of said frame-member and between said plates; marking types mounted on said lever; and a base mounted between said plates on the other arm of the frame-member, and upon which a ball is adapted to roll.
9. In a golf-ball markingdevice, the combination of a main U-shaped frame-member comprising two plates and suitable separating and securing means therefor; a lever mounted on one arm of said frame-member and between said plates; marking type mounted on said lever; a base mounted upon the other arm of said frame member upon which a ball may roll: and an inking roller mounted between said plates and lying on the path of movement of said types.
10. In a golf ball marking device, the combination of a main frame-member; a basemember mounted upon said frame-member and having a fixed curved surface over which a ball is zadapted .to roll; an oscillatory lever pivoted upon said frame-member and having a curved surface engageable with the ball; marking means carried by one of said surfaces; the center of curvature of said surfaces being substantially at the pivot of said lever, and meansfor limiting oscillatory movement of said lever.
11. In a golf-ball marking device, the combination of a main frame-member of U-shaped form; a base-member mounted upon said frame-member and having a fixed surface upon which the ball is adapted to roll; and a manually operable oscillatory lever mounted upon said frame-member and provided with marking means; said lever being curved so as to provide a lateral surface forming a continuation of the curvature of the lateral surface of the main framemember.
12. In a golf-balll marking device, the combination of a frame-member; a basemember mounted upon said frame-member and having a fixed surface upon which a ball is adapted to roll; and a manually operable oscillatory lever mounted upon said frame-member and provided with marking means; and means for limiting the oscillation of said lever; said main frame-member consisting of two spaced plates between which said lever is mounted; the means for limiting the oscillation of said lever being arranged so that in one of the eXtreme positions of such lever the marking means will be inclosed by said plates.
13. In a golf balll marking device, the combination of a main U shaped frame; a base-member having a curved surface over which a ball is adapted to roll mounted upon one arm of said frame; an oscillatory lever pivoted to the other arm of said frame and having a curved surface provided with marking means; the center 'of curvature of said surfaces being substantially at the pivot of said lever.
14. In a golf ball marking device; the combination of a frame; a serrated V shaped base-member mounted on said frame upon which a ball is adapted to roll; and means for rolling said ball along said base-member and for simultaneously impressing a mark thereon.
15. In a golf ball marking device, the combination of a U shaped frame; a longitudinally curved serrated V shaped basemember secured within one arm of said frame; and an oscillatory lever pivoted to the other arm of said frame and having a curved surface provided with marking means; the centers of curvature .of said and ball engaging marking meanscarried by said lever adapted to roll said ball toward the open end of said frame as said lever arm of the frame when said 'lever is positioned across the open end of said frame.
18. In a golf'ball marking device, a frame comprising a pair of spaced plates; ball supporting means carried by said frame; type carrying means movably supported between said plates;l and an inking roller mounted betweenr and wholly within the edges of said plates; said `type carrying means being movable to a position in which the v ype thereonis positioned wholly withinl vsaid plates. f
