Be it known that I, JOSEPH A. FISCHER, a citizen of the United States, residin in Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and tate of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Day-Beds with Adjustable Folding Headpieces, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in day beds, couches and the like, in which there is provided an elevated reclining back piece.

One object of the invention is to provide a back piece as above described, which is pivotedto the frame of the bed, whereby the said back piece may be oscillated to and fro, or folded over upon the face o'f the bed, as when desired for shipping.

Another object of the invention is to provide suitable means for holding the back piece in adjusted position.

Another object is to provide means of the kind just mentioned comprising an arcuate latch member swingably mounted on the back piece and adapted to engage a stop bar attached to one of the legs, which cooperates with the notches in the arcuate member whereby to hold the back member in any desired elevated position.

Another object of the invention is to provide means whereby, when it is desired to throw back the head piece, a foot pedal or other convenient means may be actuated. The foot pedal may be pivoted on the legs on the bed and retained in normal inoperative position by means of a spring, so that when this 4lever is stepped upon, or operated by hand, it pushes the arcuate latch off. the bar and permits the back member to fall downwardly an increment, at which point the lever catches in a notch. Release of the lever throws the latch into contact with the stop bar and the latch moves a little further permittin the next notch to engage the bar.

Other o jects of the invention will appear as the description proceeds; and while herein minute details o'f the invention yare described, the invention is not limited to these, since many and various changes may be made without departing from the scope of the invention as claimed.

In the accompanying drawing showing by way of example, one of many possible embodiments of the invention,

Fig. 5 is a fragmental side elevation showing the back piece folded over on the bed for shipping or storing.

The day bed 5, couch or the like is provided with an elevated reclining back piece 6, which is pivoted to brackets 7 secured to the frame 8 of the bed, whereby the said back piece may be oscillated to and fro or even .folded over upon the face of the bed 5 (Fig. 5) when desired, as for shipping or storing.

Pivotally attached to the back member 6 near its lower part are a pair of arcuate latch members 10 having a series of notches 11, 12, 13 and 111. Fixed to the legs 17 of the couch is a stop bar 18 which engages in the notches in the arcuate member 10 to hold the back piece in any desired elevated position. When it is desired to move the back piece 6 rearwardly, the U-shaped' lever 19 is actuated.

The U-shaped lever 19 has side members comprising foot pedals 20 pivoted on the legs 17 and is retained in normal inoperative position against the ange 21 of the bar 18 by means of a spring 22 strained between the yoke member 25 of the U-shaped lever and a cross bar 26 of the bed frame. When the pedal 20 is stepped upon, it pushes a notch of the arcuate member off the stop bar 18, and the back piece 6 falls downwardly about the distance of half the space between the notches until one of the teeth comes into contact with the yoke member 25; and upon release of the foot pedal, the next tooth moves a little further and engages the stop bar 18. This is repeated as many times as is necessary to bring the back member to the desired position. j

The operation of the device is very simple. 'When it is desired to raise the back piece, as from a position more reclining than that of Fig. 1, the operator merely raises the back piece to the desired inclination and permits the nearest of the notches 11, 12, 13 and 14 to catch on the stop 18.

When it is desired to move the back piece downwardly, the foot pedal 2O is stepped upon, and when this lever is thus actuated,

the yoke 2O engages in, for instance, the lower partof the notch 13 (see dotted lines of Fig. 2) and pushes the notch 12 off the stop bar and permits the back piece to fall downwardly a slight distance until the upper shoulder of the notch lfco'mes into contact with the yoke 25 (Fig. 3), thus holding the back piece against further movement. Upon release of the foot pedal, the yoke 25, drawn down by the 'spring 22, releases the notch 13, and the notch 13 moves a little further until it engages the stop bar 18. As stated, this is repeated as many times as is necessary to bring the back memloer to the desired position.

A stop pin 27 on the free end of the latch 10 may engage under the retaining pin 28 and against the side edges of the recesses 29 in the stop bar 18, to prevent the accidental raising` of the back piece 6 so high that it lets the arcuate latch 10 leave the stop bar 18 and yoke 25 and thus fall out of the cooperative relation with said bar and yoke, When the back piece is to be folded for shiping or storing, as in Fig. 5, the latch 1() must be lifted, as by hand, and to permit the stop pin 27 to pass over the retaining pin 28, as in Fig. 4L.

Having thus described my invention, l claim:

1. In combination, a bed frame comprising legs; a head piece pivotally movable on the frame; means pivotally attached to the head piece and movable by increments Afor changing the Vinclination of the head piece; a stop member attached to the legs at one end of the frame transversely of the frame and engageable with said means for retaining the head piece at a desired incline; andjmeans pivotally attached to said legs adjacent to the stop member having ends for receiving pressure thereon; the last mentioned means being normally inoperative and being ymovable by pressure onl the ends thereof for engagement with the first mentioned means for releasing the same from engagement with the stop member to permit said means to move for an increment, and

. upon relief of pressure on saidends permitting further movement of the first mentioned means for engagement thereof with the4 stop member for changing'the inclination of the head piece.

2. In combination, a bed frame comprising legs; a head piece pivotally movable on the frame; latches pivotally attached to the head piece provided with a series of notches; a stop member attached to the legs leased notches, and upon relief of said pressure, permitting further movement Vof the latches for engagement of said adjacent notches with the stop-member.

3. In combination, a bed frame comprising legs; a head piece vpivotally movable on the frame; latches pivotally attached to the head piece provided with a series of notches; a stop member attached to the legs at one end of the frame transversely thereof and engageable with said notches ofthe latches for retaining the head piece at a desired incline; and means ipivotally attached to said legs having ends for receiving pressurethereon; the stop member being rectangular in cross-sectionY and said means being normally inoperatively retained in the angular cross-sectional portion of the stop member, andbeing'movable by pressure on said ends for releasing thel notches of the latches from engagement with the stop member, and permitting movement of the latches for engagement with said means of notches next adj acentrin series to the released notches, and upon relief of said pressure permitting further movement of the latches for engagement ofl said adjacent notches with the stop member.

4. In combination, a day bed, conch or the like having a frame and legs; a bracket secured to the frame V.and Vlegs near the head end of the bed; an elevated reclining back piece pivoted to the brackets, whereby the said back piece may be oscillated to fro, or folded over upon the face ofthe bed; arcuate latches 'swingably attached to the lower part of the back member, 'each provided with a series of notches; a stop bar attached to said legs and adapted to receive the notches of the latches, whereby to hold the back piece in any desired elevated position; a U-shaped lever comprising a yoke member, and side arms forming foot pedals pivotedon the legs; a spring strained be- 115 tween said U-shap'ed lever andthe frame for retaining the lever in normal inoperative position; said yoke member actingV when the pedal is` stepped upon to push the latches off the latch bar tc permit the back 120 member to fall downwardly an increment throwing a tooth into contact with the yoke, and upon release of the foot'pedal permitting the next tooth to movea little further and engage the stop bar.

5. In combination, a'y day'bed,couch or the like having a frame andlegs;`brackets secured tothe frame and legs near the head of the bed; a backpiece pivoted to the bracket whereby the back piece may be os- 130 cillated to and fro or folded over upon the face of the bed; arcuate latches swingably attached to the lower part of the back piece each provided with a series of notches; a stop bar attached to said legs and adapted to receive the notches of the latches, whereby to hold the back piece in desired elevated position; a U-shaped lever comprising a yoke member, and side arms forming pedals pivoted on the legs; a spring strained between said U-shaped lever and the frame for retaining the lever in normal inoperative position; said yoke member acting when pressure is exerted upon the pedal to push the latches of the stop bar to permit the back member to fall downwardly an increment thereby throwing another notch of the series into contact with the yoke, and upon relief of pressure on the pedal permitting the latches to move a litle further and to engage said notch with the stop bar.

6. In combination, a bed frame; an elevated reclining back'piece pivoted to the frame, whereby the said back piece may be oscillated or folded over upon the frame; latches pivotally attached to the lower part of the back piece, and each provided with notches; a stop bar attached to and adapted to be engaged by the notches, whereby to hold the back piece in any desired position; retaining pins in said stop bar; and stop pins in the free ends of the latches and engageable under the retaining pins to prevent the latches from leaving the stop bar.

7. In combination, a bed frame; an elevated reclining back piece pivoted to the frame7 whereby the said back piece may be oscillated to and fro or folded over upon the face of the bed; arcuate latches swingably attached to the lower part of the back piece, each provided with a series of notches; a stop bar attached to said frame and provided with recesses adapted to receive the arcuate latches, and to be engaged by the notches, whereby to hold the back piece in any desired position; retaining pins in said stop bar near said recesses; and stop pins in the free ends of the latches and engageable under the retaining pins and against the side edges of said recesses to prevent the accidental raising of the back piece so high that it lets the arcuate latch lea-ve the stop bar; the latches being adapted to be lifted; as by hand, and to permit the stop pins to pass over the retaining pins, when the back piece is to be folded over the frame as for shipping or storing.
