JOHN W. KENNEDY, OF SENECA FALLS, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO KIDDIE-TOXVN PRODUCTS, INC., OF ROCHESTER, NEW YORK, A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
FOLDING CRIB.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 25, 1921.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN W. KENNEDY, of Seneca Falls, in the county of Seneca and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Cribs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and to the reference-numerals marked thereon.
My present invention relates to crib beds of the folding type usually provided with wheels for moving them about the nursery or bedroom and adapted to be collapsed into a substantially fiat position against the wall, the crib constituting an inclosure or pen for small children as well as a sleeping place and it has for its object to provide a simple, cheap'and conveniently constructed crib of this nature. The improvements are clirected in part toward the pivotal connections of the parts permitting the folding ac tion and to the means for supporting the bottom frame that carries the mattress. To
these and other ends the invention resides I in certain improvements and combinations of parts all as will be hereinafter more fully described, the novel features being pointed out in the claims at the end of the specification.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is'a side elevation of a folding crib constructed in accordance with and illustrating one embodiment of my invention;
Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof with the mattress removed;
Fig. 3 is a top plan view reduced, showing the manner in which the crib is folded, the bottom thereof being removed, and
F ig. 4 is a transverse vertical section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 2.
Similar reference numerals throughout the several views indicate the same parts.
In the present embodiment of the invention, the crib is a rectangular screened inclosure the screening on the four sides being indicated at 1. At the sides, the screening is carried by parallel vertical frames 2 and at the ends by similar narrower frames 3.. The side frames are pivoted together for parallel movement toward and from each other by links 4. There is such a link at the top and one at the bottom of each end of each side frame connecting it at corresponding points to the corresponding end of the other side frame and the pivotal points thereof are indicated at 5. These links are in the plane of but above andbelow the end frames 3. When the side frames are folded to the position of Fig. 8, the end frames have "independent movement being themselves pivoted at central points, indicated at 6, to the links 4 so that they too swing upon vertical axes not, however, located at their ends and assume positionsparallel with each other and with the side frames, as indicated in said figure. In this way, one end frame flattens against one side frame and the other end frame against the other side frame, while the intermediate portions of the two side frames are close against each other and thus the whole device folds to a thickness not exceeding the combined thickness of the two side frames or if the ends of the side frames are extended too far beyond the pivots 5 to permit of this, then the end frames or portions of them are disposed between the side frames. The latter and the links, of course, always swing with a parallel motion and only the end frames, being pivoted centrally, swing in planes angular to. these and to each other in the-process of folding.
The crib is held extended by a bottom or mattress support 7 which might be an ordinary bed spring but in the present instance, is merely a slatted frame, the frame being indicated by the said reference nu- 'ineral 7 and the longitudinal slats at 8. In
the present instance we prefer to support the crib upon wheels 9 near each end of each side frame, these wheels turning on stub axles 10 secured in the frames and extending therethrough so that their inner ends 11 project inwardly from the inner faces of the frames and provide sup orts upon which the bottom 7 rests. The atter may be readily removed for folding purposes or tilted up against one side frame so that it rests upon only two of the axle stubs in the folded position.
.I have illustrated rather conventionally a mattress indicated at 12 but it will be understood that any known or desired form of bottom or spring or mattress may be used in place of or in connection with the bottom shown.
I claim as my invention: 1. In a folding crib, the combination with a pair of opposite side frames, of a pair of parallel links pivotally connecting each end of each side frame withthecorresponding end of the other side frame, and end frames pivoted to the respective pairs of links to fold therewith against the side frames.
2. In a folding crib, the combination with a pair of opposite side frames, of a pair of parallel links pivotally connect-ingjeach; end of each side frame with the corresponding end of the other side frame, and end frames pivoted centrally to the centers of the respective pairs of links ..to fold therewith against the side frames.
3. In a. folding crib comprising side and end-frames foldable fiatwise against one another, of supporting Wheels for the crib mounted upon opposite framesand haying axles projecting into the interiorof the crib,
and a'removable-bottom for the latter sup- 20 ported upon said axles.
