Description

1. v.` nucKwELL. Ruche Holders.
omves Mauss) AM, PHnTwLIIHDsRAPH/c commise UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES V. ROCKWELL, OF NEW YORK, N.KY.
IMPRQVEMENT IN RUCHE-HOLDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters/Patent No. 139,423, dated May 27, 1873; application tiled March 27, 1873.
To all 'whom it may concern.-
' Be it known that I, JAMES V. RooKWELL, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented an Improved Drum for putting up Neck-Ruches, 8vo., of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 is a sectional side view of my improved drum; Fig. 2, a transverse section thereof on the line c c, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts in all the gures.
The object of this invention is to produce an apparatus or means whereby neck-ruches, lace-goods, or other articles of fine or intricate construction for ladies wear, which will suffer by contact and exposure to dust, &c., can be held without exposing the goods sustained thereon to external pressure, or to the inuence of dust or atmospheric impurities, while the goods will be still properly displayed, and readily withdrawn or removed from such holding apparatus. My invention consists in constructing for this purpose a drum which has projecting heads or flanges at its ends, and
upon which the ruches or lace, &c., are Wound. At one or both ends this drum is open and its interior is hollowed for the reception of an inner filling of ruches or lace. A drum thus made can be illed with and surrounded by the substances or articles to be displayed, al-
improved drum. The same is made of pasteboard or other suitable material of proper size which serve to confine the outer layer of ruches e or lace, 8vo., Wound upon the drum, and to pre` vent it from slipping off. At one end, at least, or, if desired, at both ends, the drum is perforated, as shown in Fig. 1, to permit the insertion of an inner layer, G, of ruches, lace, &c., of which the end is allowed to protrude through the opening of the drum for inspection, and also to allow the Withdrawal of the ruches, Snc., from within the drum. The drum thus filled and surrounded by ruches, is, in stores, &c., to be placed within a box, 1), of rectangular or other cross-section, and therein protected from dust, &c. By opening the lid of the box D the goods contained in the drum can be easily inspected. The flanges a project far enough from the periphery of the drum to protect the outer layer of ruches, so that the same will not be crushed by contact with the sides of the box D.
In this manner the display and sale of articles of the class referred to will be greatly facilitated, and the trade, generally, will therefore improve by the use of my invention.
I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The drum A provided with projecting flanges a a, and perforated at one orboth ends to re-v ceive a filling and an outer layer of ruches or other fine goods, substantially as described.
J. V. ROGKWELL.
