UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HARRY '.B. HILLS, OF TOMPKINSVILLE, NEW' YORK, ASSIGNOR TO STEWARD DAVIT & EQUIPMENT CORPORATION, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
SHIP S DAVIT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 18, 1921.
Application filed November 28, 1919. Serial No. 341,261.
T o all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY B. HILLS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Tompkinsville, county of Richmond, and
' ed for davits which are used in connection with nested life-boats.
I will describe a davit embodying my invention and then point out the novel fea-V tures thereof in the claim.
The accompanying drawing is a front elevation of a. set of ships davits each embodying .my invention and associated with nested life-boats.
Referring to the drawing, a designates a boom or crane which is suitably mounted to be moved outboard and inboard of a ship. It may constitute the davit or form part of a davit structure. The specific type of davit shown in the drawing is, generally the same as that set forth in U. S. Patents Nos. 1,123,132, and 1,245,752 granted to T. H. Marten, December' 24, 1914- and November 6, 1917, respectively. Generally speaking, it comprises a suitable support A on which the boom or crane a is mounted vto be moved in a vertical plane, and a screw and crank A1 for moving the boom or crane a outboard and inboard. At the upper end of each boom or crane a, instead of the single eye usually employed, I provide a plurality of eyes, as here shown two eyes, al,
a2. Associated with each eye is a block and falls arrangement of the usual type employed for lowering a life-boat. As here shown each block and falls consist of two blocks a3, a* and the connecting fall or rope o5.
As shown in the drawing, each life-boat is provided with its own set of blocks and falls and in the operation of my invention in launching a nest of boats, the uppermost boat is first raised from its rest and carried outboard when the booms a are moved outwardly. The boat is then lowered into the water and released with the falls and blocks hanging. The next boat is then lifted from its support by its set of blocks and falls so that it may swing outboard and then lowered in the water.
The advantages of my invention are obvious when compared with prior practice in this art. Heretofore but one set of blocks and falls were used with each set of davits for lowering and the life-boats comprised in a nest. After the first boat was lowered and released it was usual to pull up the empty tackle (known as recovering the falls) in order to use it to lower Athe next life-boat comprised in the nest. In the recovering of the lower block, the rope or fall with no load on it, especially if wet, will twist, snarl and tangle. In addition the lower block will turn over (that is topple) still further tangling the rope. All of this results in a loss of time in lowering a second boat, which loss of time may result seriously. By my invention all these diiiiculties are avoided in the launching of the nest of boats, which can be done in a minimum amount of time. Y
Having thus described my invention what I desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
In combination, a pair of life boats; a
shipg davit at each end of the boats, and each davit comprising a support and a boom movable inboard and outboard and having its end portion extending at substantially right angles to its support and provided with a pair of supporting eyes; a block and fall for each end of one life boat and suspended from an eye in the adjacent davit, and a block and fall for each end of the second life boat and suspended from the second eye in the adjacent davit.
