To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WALTER SCOTT Don, a citizen'of the United States, and a resident of Kent, in the county of Portage and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Flashlight, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

Another object is to provide a switch which is simple and durable in construction and composed of few parts not liable to get out of order easil lVith these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction as hereinafter shown and described and then specifically pointed out in the claims.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the switch as applied to a portable self-contained electric lamp;
Fig. 2 is a sectional side elevation of the same with parts shown in elevation;
Fig. 3 is a sectional plan view of the same on the line 33 of Fig. 2; and
Fig. 4 is a cross section of the same on the line SL-4 of Fig. 2.
The casing 10 of the flash light is made of hard rubber or other suitable insulating material, and is provided with a removable cover 11 adapted to be locked in place on the casing 10 by a suitable fastening device such as a bail 12 pivoted on the cover 11 and engaging a pin, screw, stud or similar member 13 held on one face of the casing 10, as plainly shown in Fig. 1. Within the casing 10 is arranged a source of electrical energy, preferably in the form of a battery 15 of any approved construction, preferably, however of the construction shown and described in the application for Letters Patent of the United States, Serial No. 421,236 filed by me under even date herewith. On the top of the battery 15 is arranged a plate 16 of mica or other insulating material engaged by a ledge 17 formed on the nd i e of the cover 11.. The bat hold of the casing 10 with one hand tery 15 is provided with tive connecting members ably in the form of metallic plates, between which are held the battery elements, the said plates terminating at their upper ends in angular members 22 and 23 secured by bolts 24, 25 to the cover 11 thus fastening the battery 15 to the cover 11. It will be noticed that by the arrangement described the battery 15 can be readily removed from the casing 10 on unlocking the cover 11 and removing it from the casing 10.
On the cover 11 and preferably at the center thereof is held a pivot 30 on which is mounted to turn the base 31 of the housing 32 of an electric lamp 33 of any approved construction and mounted. within the said housing 32. On the saidhousing 32 is mounted a knob 34 to permit the user to turn the housing 32, as hereinafter more fully explained, the turning movement of the housing 32, however, being limited b a stop pin 35 depending from the base 31 and engaging the wall of a cut-out portion 36 arranged on one side of the cover 11, as plainly indicated in Fig. 3.
The heads of the bolts 24. and 25 form contact members 40 and 41 of an electric switch having contact members 42, 43 mounted on the base 31 and connected in the usual manner with the filament of the electric lamp 33. Thus when the housing 32 is in the position shown in full lines in Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 4 then the contact members 42 and 43 are in engagement with the contact members 40 and 41 and hence the electric lamp 33 is supplied with electrical energy from the battery 15. When the housing 32 is turned into the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3 then the contact members 42 and 43 are out of engagement with the contact members 40 and 41 and hence the electric lamp 33 is disconnected from the battery 15. From the foregoing it will be seen that on turning the housing 32 carrying the electric lamp 33 the latter is lit, when the housing is in one position and is extinguished when the housing isturned into the other position.
It will be noticed that the user having can readily use the thumb having hold of the knob 34; for turning the housing 32 of the electric lamp 33 to turn the current on or off as desired.
The housing 32 is provided With the usual positive and nega- 20 and 21, preferlens 50 for the passage of the rays of light emanating from the electric lamp 33. The pivot 30 is preferably in the form of a bolt provided with a spring 55 to insure proper engagement of the contact members 42 and 43 with the contact members 40 and 41 on the cover 11.
It will also be noticed that by the use of the pivot 30 in the form of a bolt, the housing 32 can be readily disconnected from the cover 11 Whenever it is desired to do so.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A flash light, comprising a casing having a removable cover, a battery in the casing having connecting members, both securing the connecting members to the cover of the casing, the bolts extending through the cover and forming contacts, a housing carrying a lens and pivotally mounted on the cover, an electric lamp in the housing, and contact members on the base of the with the lamp and housing and connected of contact with the movable into land out.
