AUTOMOBILE WINlJOW-OPERATING DEVICE.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that '1, Emmy BAnoUeH, a citizen of the United States and resident of the city of Poughkeepsie', in the county of Dutchess and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automobile Window-Operating Devices, of which-the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improve- 1 ments in window operating devices, particularly for automobiles, one of the objects of the invention being to simplify the operation of the mechanismforopening and closing windows of this type and for automatically locking the same in any desired position."
Another object of the invention is the provision of a window operating device of the character mentioned, wherein all operating parts, except the operating handle, are concealed in the frame-work of the door from the view of the operator.
A further object of the invention is to provide a window operating device of the type-mentioned which is capable .of manufacture on a commercial scale, or in other words one which is not so diflicult to produce as to bebeyond the reasonable cost of such'a contrivance.
With these and other objects in view, which will more fully appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the
same consists in the combination, arrangement and construction of parts hereinafter described, pointed out in the appended claims and illustrated in the accompanying "drawings, it being understood that many changes may be made in the size and proportion of the several parts and details of construction within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.

One of the many possible embodiments of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a, central vertical section taken through a portion of an automobile door and window with the operating device constructed in accordance with the present in vention in position thereon; Fig. 2 is a section taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is an elevation of an automobile door and window from the inside, showing the improved operating device thereon.

Referring now tothe drawings, the numeral 10 indicates an automobile door, such as are .used on closed cars. This door is provided with a window opening 11, and includes an outer door panel 112 and an inner lining board 13, the latter being spaced from said panel. In the vertical rails of the frame-work of the door are provided guide grooves 1 1, in which a Window 15 is slidably arranged. This window may include a sash, if desired, or it may be provided with a metallic channel member 16 inclosing its lowenedge 17, as clearly shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. So far. described, the construction and operation of the elements are well known and may be of any suitable or preferred type.
The window operating mechanism includes a bodily stationary screw-threaded spindle 18, which is rotatably mounted in a frame 19, the latter being secured in any suitable manner to the inner face of the lining board 13. The spindle extends vertically in the vertical center line ofthe door and is dis posed below the window opening 11. The upper end of the frame 19 extends horizontally outward, as clearly shown at 20, serving as one of the bearings of the spindle. The lower end of the said spindle is provided with a recess 21, into which is fitted thepointed end of a supporting screw 22-, the latter extending through the horizontally outwardly extending lower end 23 of the frame 19. A locking nut 24:, in mesh with the supporting bolt 22, may be rovided for the well known purpose. he purpose of mounting the lower end of the spindle upon the screw bolt 22 is to permit of adjustment of the spindle, according to the requirements. To t e upper end of the spindle is keyed or otherwise fastened, immediately below the bearing 20, a bevel pinion- 25, in mesh with a bevel gear 26. This'gear is fixedly attached to a-short shaft 27, the latter extending through and 'beyondthe lining board 13 and bemg rohandle 30, that extends through a plate 31,
which is fastened by screws 32, or otherwise,
to the inner surfaceof the lining board 13.
I In the construction shown herein the hub 33 of the crank-handle extends through the plate 31 and is prevented from disengagement therefrom by a countersunk-head 34 on the said vhub. The connection between the shaft27 and the crank-handle is bthe proper direction. screw-threads on the spindle 18 and, ob-
tained by making the outer end of said handle of square cross-section and fitting it into a similarly shaped bore in .the crankhandle.
To the channel member is attached a downwardly extending lug 35, provided at itsfree end with an inwardly projecting extension 36. To this extension is fixedly secured a nut 37, the threads of which mesh with those of the spindle 18.
The operation of this device is-as follows: In order to raise or lower the window, as the case may be, the crank-handle is turned in The pitch of the viously, in the nut 37 in mesh therewith should be such that a selflocking structure is obtained. In this manner, the window will be locked against movement in any desired position without the aid of special fastening means.
From an inspection'of the drawings it- It Will be observed that an extremely simple and inexpensive means for efiecting the raising, lowering and locking of the window sash is provided, and that there is practically nothing in the device herein described that is liable to get out of order or out of alinement.

What I claim is:-
An automobile door having a window opening and including an outer door panel and an inner lining board spaced from said panel, a window pane slidably arranged in relation to said opening and adapted to be brought out of alinement with the same into the space between said anel and lining board, a vertically extending frame secured to the inner face of said lining board, a vertically extending screw-threaded bodily stationary spindle journaled in said frame, a nut fixed to and projecting below said pane in mesh with said spindle, a. transverse frame member rigidly secured to said firstmentioned frame, a shaft extending throu h and beyond said lining board rotatatiiy mounted in said first-mentioned frame and in said transverse frame member, a bevel pinion fixed to said spindle, a bevel ear fixedly attached to 'said shaft in mesh with said pinion, said bevel gear being dis osed between said first-mentioned frame an said transverse frame member and held by the latter in position, and a crank-handle on said shaft for actuating the latter.
