To all whom it may concern:

A Be it known that I, `BENJAMIN J. TAYMAN,

ofthe city of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a Last and Shoe Holder, and Shoe-Sole and Welt Trimmer, of

`which the following is a specification stiifening, the spur being locked to prevent `its turning while the shoe remains on the last. The spur, in its unlocked position, turns freely on a center-pin while the shoe is put on and ,p removed from the last.

The invention further relates to a novel combination and arrangement of the knife and Welt-trimmer, guide, gage, and spring-guard, with the cutter stock, as hereinafter fully described. l

Figure 1 is a plan view of the improved last and shoe holder, and sole and welt trimmera shoe being in connection therewith for the trimming operation. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same. Fig. 3, Sheet No. 2, is a side View of a last with the improvements attached. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 5 is a view of the rod H at right angles to the view in Fig. 4. Fig. 6, Sheet No. 3, is a `side elevation ot' the cutter-stock I and parts attached, full size. Fig. 7 is a bottom view of the same. Fig. 8 is a face view of the guide Mand welt trimmer K detached from the stock I.

A is the last-holder, and B the last, whichl has a shoe in connection, in Figs. l and 2. It

is shown in detail in Figs. 3 and 4. The holder is secured to the slide of a semi-rotating jack by means of bolts, which pass through the slot a, ofthe ila-nge b, when the shoe is held for trimming, or burnishing the sole. The plate c of the holder is provided with steadypins C G, which t in the holes d d in the plate c', which is confined on the upper edge of the last by. means of screws. D is a bolt, which turns freely in the middle hole g of the plate c. It has a crosspin, f, over the projecting ends of which the elongated parts of `the hole g pass when the last is placed in position, so as to bring them inside of the plate. Then, by turning the lever E on the inner end of the bolt one-quarter around, as the pins pass over the inclines h h of the plate it is brought tight against the plate c of the holder to fasten the last securely. F is a circular spur in a slot in the heel of the last, which turns freely on the pin G while the shoe is placed on the last or removed therefrom. When the shoe is put on the last the spur is locked, and as the pricks have entered the lining inside of the heel-stifi'ening the shoe is held securely without being tacked in the usual manner. The locking is effected by means of the rod H, seen in Figs. 3 and 5.

The rod is pushed down through the hole e of the plate c', with its tail-end against a tooth of the spur, and turned partly around so as to bring its inclines t' against the inclines t" of the plate, and thereby lock the spur. When the shoe has to be removedfrom the last the rod is turned in the reverse direction to` unlock the spur and allow it to turn freely. Each last is provided With a plate, c, but only one locking-rod, H, and locking-bolt D are required for each machine. I is a cutterstock, provided with a knife J, welt-trimmer K, gage L, guide M, and spring-guard N, seen in detail in Figs. 6 and 7. The guide and welt-trimmer are seen detached from the stock I in Fig. 8. The knife, J isheld on its seat by means of the screw O, there being a slot, j, to admit of its longitudinal adjustment. The Welt-trimmer K and guide M are held against the inner end of the stock I by means of the Set-screw O1. The gauge L is adjustable by means of the slot j', lever P which turns on the set-screw O2, andmanipulating lever Q, as seen clearly in Figs. 5 and 6. `The guard N is accommodated to the thicknesses of different soles, and to the fore and shank parts of the same sole, by means ofthe springs RR on the rods S S, which slide in the lugs l l l l of the stock I. At the outer end of lsaid stock there.. is ahandle, T, for the right hand of the oper ator, a thumb-rest, m, on one end of the lever PATENT OFFICE.

Q, above mentioned, and a fore-finger rest, a, on the other end. The inner end of the stock I is provided with the handle U, which'projects from the guide M for the left hand of the operator. For the free movement of the cutter-stock I, to bring it into the various positions required in trimming the sole and welt, the inner end of the stock has a pin, o, which turns freely in the lower end of the rod V, the upper end of which is connected with the socket p in the front end of the casting W, and turns freely therein, the inner end of the spring-pin q turning freely iu the"'annular groove r of the rod. The said casting W has a socket, p', at its rear end,which turns freely on the front end of the rod V', which has an annular groove, s, into which a pin on the inner end of the screw t 'projects to hold the socket on the rod, the groove extending lengthwise of the shaft sufficiently to admit of such a longitudinal movement of the casting W as may be required for changing the position of the casting, as hereinafter described. The rear end of the rod is connected with the vertical rod X, by means of the pin u and checks t v, so as to admit of an up-and-down movement of the stock I. A lateral movement of the stock is obtained by the lower end of the rod X turning freely in the standard Y. There is a stop, z, secured by means of the screw w to the adjustable collar y of the rod V', for the adjustment of the stock I for trimming the fore and shank parts of the sole. When the fore part of the sole is to be trimmed, the pin w of the casting W rests against the rear side of the stop, so as to bring the knife J into position for the fore part.Y The position of the stock is changed for trimming the shank by drawing the casting W forward and turning it partly around and bringing the pin w into the notch z in the front end of the stop, thus turning the stock I so as to bring the knife on an angle to suit the bevel of the shank. The collar y is adjustable on the rod V', for setting the knife, by having a loose fit on the rod and being fastened by means of the screw t'. The annular groove s of the rod V' is of sufficient length to admit of changing the casting W fore and aft the requisite distance to terminate the cut of the fore part of the sole in the rear of the termination of the shank, as may be desired.

I claim as my invention- 1. The last-holder A having pins C C and locking-bolt D, provided with a cross-pin, f, and lever E, in combination with the plate c' of the last B, having holes d d and g and inclines h h, substantially in the manner and for the purpose above described.

2. The combination of the circular spur F and the rod H with the heel of the last for securing the shoe thereon, the rod having inclines i which engage with inclines z" of the plate c', substantially as described.

3. The combination and arrangement of the knife J, welt trimmer K, gage L, guide M, guard N, levers P and Q, and stock I, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

4. The combination of the adjustable collar y, stop z, rod V', and casting W having a socket, p, and pin, av, substantially in the manner and for the purpose described.
