Be it known that I, GEORGE J. NETH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Speed-Regulating Devices, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to a speed regulating device which, while designed primarily for use with autographio registers, may be applied to mechanisms of various kinds.
In the operation of the autographic register trouble is frequently experienced due to the too rapid speed of the paper feeding devices. When these devices are operated too fast, or are started with a jerk, the superposed webs of paper are liable to be disarranged so as to throw the printed matter thereon out of alinement; and where a pin wheel feed is employed there is great danger of tearing out the holes in the webs of paper. Further, the too rapid operation of the paper feeding devices causes the rolls of paper from which the webs of paper are withdrawn to acquire a momentum which will continue the rotation of the rolls after the operation of the feeding devices has ceased, thus causing a surplus of paper to be unwound therefrom.
One object of the invention is to provide an autographic register with means for automatically regulating the speed at which they paper feeding devices may be operated.
A further object ofthe invention is to provide a device for regulating the speed at which a rotatable member may be rotated, which will be simple in its construction and positiv in its operation.
A further object of the invention is to provide a speed regulating device which can be applied to the feeding mechanism of an autographic register, or other machine, with little or no modification of said register, or said machine.
A further object of the invention is to provide such a speed regulating device which will also serve as a detent to prevent the rearward movement of the rotatable member.
Other objectsof the invention will appear as the mechanism is described in detail.
In the accompanying drawings Figure l is a side elevation, partly broken away, of an autographic register, showing my invention applied thereto; Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 22 of Fig. 4 looking in the direction of the arrows; Fig. 3 is a section taken on the line 33 of Fig. 4 looking in the direction of the arrows; Fig. 4 is a section taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 2; Fig. 5 is a front elevation of a slightly modified form of the invention; and Fig. 6 is a rear elevation of that form of the device shown in Fig. 5.
In these drawings I have illustrated two embodiments of my invention, which diifer one from the other only in the character of th detents and in the details of construction. In applying my invention to a rotatable device, the speed of which is to be controlled, I provide two cooperating memhere, one of which is movable into and out of cooperative relation with the other, the movement of said movable member being controlled by the speed at which the rotatable device is actuated. Preferably the cooperating members comprise a stop and a movable detent, the latter being connected with the rotatable device for rotation therewith. Preferably a plurality of stops and a plurality of detents are provided and the detents are arranged so that, when in their normal positions, they will clear the stops and permit of the rotation of the rotatable device. The rotation of th rotatable device will tend to throw the detents outwardly, by centrifugal force, but this action requires a relatively long movement of the rotatable device and in order to secure a quick stopping action, I have provided an elevating device which, when the rotatable device is actuated, will move the detents, one at a time, into alinenient withone of the stops. The elevating device is so arranged with relation to the stop that the detent will be released while it is still some distance from the stop and permitted to move inwardly toward its normal position. If the rotatable device is moving at a normal rate of speed the detent will have time to complete its inward movement so that it will clear the stop and permit the continued movement of the rotatable device, but if the rotatable device is rotating at an excessive speed, the detent will not have time to complete its inward movement but will be moved into engagement with the stop, thus checking the movement of the rotatable device. The stops, detents, and elevating device are so arranged relatively one to th other that one of the detents will always be in a position to engage a stop upon a very slight forward movement of the rotatable device, provided this movement. is at an excessive speed, thus causing the movement of the rotatable device to be almost instantly checked if the speed is excessive. A detent which has engaged a stop will automatically return to its normal position as soon as the forward pressure thereon is relieved, thus restoring the device to its normal condition and permitting further rotation thereof. The invention may take various forms and may be employed in mechanism of various kinds, and it will be understood that the particular embodiments here illustrated have been chosen for the purpose of illustration only.
In the present drawings I have shown the invention as applied to an autographic register comprising a main frame 1 in which are mounted a plurality of rolls of paper 2. The webs of paper are drawn from these rolls about guides 3 and over the writing table 4 by means of pin wheels 5, the pins of which extend through perforations formed along the edges of several webs of paper. One pin wheel has rigidly connected therewith a gear 6 which meshes with an intermediate gear 7, which in turn meshes with a gear 8 rigidly secured to a shaft 9 which projects beyond the frame of the machine and has attached thereto suitable operating means such as a handle 10. with is a detent carrier 11 which, in that form of the device shown in Figs. 1 to 4, is in the form of a disk mounted on the end of the shaft and rigidly secured thereto, this disk being provided with a hub portion 12 on which is mounted the handle 10. The detents may be mounted on the carrier in any suitable manner, but, as here shown, the carrier is provided with a circumferential channel 13 and the detents are in the form of pawls 14 arranged within the channel- 13 and pivotally mounted on pins 15 extending through the side walls of the channel. There may be any desired number of detents, but in the arrangement here shown I have employed nine pawls. Each pawl has at a point removed from its axis and preferably in advance thereof, an outwardly extending nose 16 and may, if desired, be provided at its forward end with a weight, as shown at 17, to facilitate its movement by gravity into its normal position. Arranged adjacent to the detent carrier 11 and in positions to be engaged by the noses 16 of the pawls 17, when the latter have been moved outwardly from their normal positions are means of which it may be rigidly secured to the frame of an autographic register, or other supportingstructure. The carrier fits within the outer end of the casing and rotates freely therein and may, if desired, be provided with an outwardly extending flange 21 to overlap the edge of the casing. In that form of the device here illustrated the stops are formed in the casing 19 by providing, that portion thereof adjacent to the outer edge of the channel 13 in the pawl carrier with a series of slots 22, those por-' tions of the casing lying between the respective slots constituting the stops 18. The pawls 14 are of such a size that when they are in their retracted positions they will lie wholly within the channel13 and will thus clear the stops, but when moved outwardly will project into the spaces 22 and into line with the stops 18.
As has been stated, I prefer to provide means for positively moving the detents, or pawls, outwardly into alinement with the stops, and to this end I have employed, in the present instance, an elevating device, in the form of a cam plate 23, mounted alongside the pawl carrier andrigidly secured to the casing 19. This cam plate has along its upper edge a plurality of projections 24,
there being preferably one such projection for each stop 18, and in the present instance I have provided ten stops and ten cam projections. 'Each cam projection has its rear edge inclined and its front edge straight, the straight edge being preferably arranged radially to the axis of the pawl carrier. Each pawl has secured thereto a pin 25 which extends laterall therefrom through a slot 26 in the side wal of the channel adj acent to the cam plate. The outerend of this pin is arranged to engage the inclined edges of the several cam projections, as the pawl carrier is rotated, and to move the pawl outwardly so that its nose will project into one of the slots 22 and into alinementwith the adjacent stop. The straight edge of the cam projection is so arranged with relation to its stop that the pin of the pawl will pass the straight edge of the projection and thus release the pawl to permit it to move inwardly by gravity, when the nose of the pawl is spaced a short distance from the.
stop. If desired, the rear side of each pin may be flattened, as shown, so that the pin will clear the cam projection while the pawl is in its outermost position. If the pawl carrier is rotating at a normal rate of speed when the pin clears the stop the pawl will move inwardly by gravity so as to assume its normal position before it reaches the stop, but if the pawl carrier is rotated at a speed beyond the normal rate of speed the pawl will not have time to complete its inward movement and will be caused to engage the stop, thus checking the movement of the pawl carrier and the parts connected therewith. The pawls are so arranged with re lation to the stops and cam projections, that when one pawl is in engagement with a stop the pin of another pawl will be in a position spaced a short distance from a stop so that a very short movement of the pawl carrier will bring a, pawl into engagement with a stop.
In the disclosure of Figs. 2 and 3 the pawls are so arranged that when one of them is in engagement with the stop, or in a corresponding posit-ion, if it has been retracted, the next succeeding pawl will be approximately in a position to clear its cam projection, while the next succeeding, or third, pawl will be spaced from its stop approximately twice the distance that the sec ond pawl is spaced from its stop.
In Figs. 5 and 6 of the drawings, I have shown a slightly modified form of the invention. In this form of the device a detent carrier 27 is mounted on the shaft 9 for rotation therewith and this detent carrier is formed of a single piece of metal and has a plurality of radial recesses, 0r guideways, 28 in which are slidably mounted a series of plungers, or reciprocating detents, 29, the
outward movements of which are limited by pins 30 extending through slots 31 in the side walls of the recesses and projecting beyond the side of the carrier to constitute actuating means for the detents, or plungers. This pawl carrier is also inclosed in a casing 32, similar to the casing 19, above described, and having a flange 33 by means of which it may be secured to the casing of the machine, or to any other supporting structure. This casing has inwardly extending flanges 34c and 35 arranged in the front and in the rear of the pawl carrier to form a guideway therefor in which it rotates freely. The casing is provided about the periphery of the carrier, and preferably arranged above the same, with two stops, 36 and 37 although it will be understood any suitable number of stops may be used. These stops are so arranged that when the detents are in their retracted positions they will clear the stops. A cam plate 38 is rigidly secured to' the casing adjacent to the detent carrier, preferably by attaching it to the flange 35, and has two cam projections 39, the rear edges of which are inclined and the forward. edges of which are straight. The operation of this device is similar to that of the device first described. The cam projection is so arranged that each pawl will be moved into its operative. position as it rises over the cam projection but will be released while it is still some distance from the corresponding stop, thus allowing suiiicient time for the detent to be retracted by gravity if the shaft is rotated at a proper rate of speed. In this instance, the pawls are released at a somewhat greater distance from the stop than they are in the form of the device first disclosed, thus permitting the shaft to be rotated ata greater speed, but it will be understood that the speed in either instance canbe regulated by varying the positions of the cam projections with relation to the stops.
In both forms of the device it will be noted that when the detents are in their retracted positions the actuating pins will lie in front of the cam projections which serve to prevent the rearward movement of the shaft and thus avoids the necessity of providing a separate detent to prevent rearward movement.
The operation of the device will be readily understood from the foregoing description and it will be apparent that I have provided a speed regulating device which is very simple in its construction andv operation and which is also positive in its operation inasmuch as the detents are positively moved into their operative positions, and must be allowed time enough 'to move to their inoperative positions by gravity if the rotation of the shaft is to be continued. Further, the device is of such a character that it can be easily manufactured and can be applied to autographic registers, or other machines, of standard construction with little or no modifiction thereof. Not only is the speed regulator itself thought to be new but I also believe myself to be the first to have applied an automatic speed regulating device to an autographic register and I, therefore, wish it to be understood that I do not desire to be limited to the details of the construction shown as various modifications may occur to a person skilled in the art.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In an autographic register, the combination with a horizontal shaft, means actuated by said shaft to continuously advance the paper, and means for rotating said shaft, of cooperating parts to control the rotation of said shaft, one of said parts being fixed against movement and the other of said parts being movable into and out of cooperative relation to the other part to check the movement of said shaft, and said move- Inent being controlled by the speed of rotation of said shaft to cause said movable part to be moved into such cooperative relation with the first stop only when said shaft is rotated at excessive speed.
2. In an autographic register, the. combination with a horizontal shaft, means actuated by said shaft to continuously advance the paper, and means for rotating said shaft, of a stop supported adjacent to said shaft, a detent movably connected with saidshaft, and means for moving said detent into line with said stop and for releasing the same at a point in advance of said stop to permit it to move into an inoperative position, thereby permitting the continuous rotation of said shaft at normal speed and checking the movement thereof if rotated at an excessive speed. 7
3. In an autographic register, the combination with a horizontal shaft, means actuated by said shaft to advance the paper, and means for rotating said shaft, of a stop arranged above said shaft, a plurality of detents movably connected with said shaft, and means for moving said detents into alinement with said stop as they approach the ame and for releasing said detents at points "in advance of said stop to permit them to move downwardly by gravity, thereby permitting the continuous rotation of said shaft at normal speed but checking the movement thereof if rotated at an excessive speed.
In an autographic register, the combination with a rotatable paper feeding member and means for actuating the same, of a plurality of stops supported adjacent to said rotatable member, a plurality of detents mounted on said rotatable member for movement into and out of positions to engage said stops, and means to move each detent into a position to engage each stop as it approaches the same and to release said detents at points in advance of the respective stops, said detents being so arranged with relation to said stops that when said rotatable member is in a given position the successive detents will be spaced different distances from the respective stops.
5. A speed regulating device, comprising a member rotatable about a horizontal axis, a detent movably mounted on said rotatable member, a plurality of stops arranged adjacent to said rotatable member, and means controlled bythe rotation of said rotatable member to move said detent successively into positions to engage the respective stops.
6. A speed regulating device, comprising a member rotatable about a horizontal axis, a plurality of detents mounted on said rotatable member by movement toward and from the axis thereof, a stop arranged above and adjacent to said rotatable member, andmeans to successively move said detents into alinement with said stop and to release the same at a point in advance of said stop to permit them to move inwardly by gravity and thus clear the stop.
7. In an autographic register, the combination with a horizontal shaft, means actuated by said shaft to continuously advance the paper, and means for rotating said shaft, of a rotatable member connected with said shaft, a plurality of detents movably mounted on said rotatable member, a stop arranged adjacent to said rotatable member, and means for successively moving the detents into alinement with said stop and for releasing the same at a point in advance of said stop to permit them to move out of alinement therewith. 1
8. In an autographic register, the combination with a horizontal shaft, means actuated by said shaft to continuously advance the paper, and means for rotating said shaft, of a rotatable member connected with said shaft, a pluralityof detents movably mounted on said rotatable member, a plurality of stops arranged adjacent to said rotatable member, and means for successively moving each of said detents into alinement with the successive stops and for releasing said detents while they are spaced some distance in advance of the respective stops, to permit them to move out of alinement therewith.
9. A speed regulating device, comprising a rotatable member, a plurality of detents movably mounted on said rotatable member, a plurality of stops arranged adjacent to said rotatable member, and means for successively moving each of said detents into alinement with the successive stops and for releasing said detents while they are spaced some distance in advance of the respective stops, to permit them to move out of alinement therewith, said detents being so arranged with relation to said stops that when said rotatable member is in a given position the successive detents will be spaced different distances from the respective stops.
10. A speed regulating device, comprising a rotatable member, a plurality of stops arranged above said rotatable member, a plurality of detents mounted on said rotatable member for movement into and out of positions to engage said stops, and an elevating device fixed with relation to said rotatable member and having a plurality of cam projections to control the movements of said detents.
11. A speed regulating device, comprising a rotatable member, having a recess extending inwardly from the periphery thereof, a stop arranged adjacent to the periphery of said rotatable member, a detent mounted in the recess in said rotatable member and movableinto and out of the same, and means controlled by the rotation of said rotatable member to move said detent outwardly into line with said stop.
12. A speed regulating device, comprising a rotatable member having a recess extending' inwardly from the periphery thereof and having a slot in the lateral wall of said recess, a stop arranged adjacent to the periphery of said rotatable member, a detent movably mounted in said recess and comprising a part extending through said slot and beyond the wall of said rotatable member, and a fixed actuating device arranged adjacent to said rotatable member and in the path of said projecting part of said detent to impart movement to the latter.
13. A speed regulating device, comprising a rotatable member having a circumferential channel in the periphery thereof, a plurality of pavvls pivotally mounted in said channel, a stop arranged adjacent to the periphery of said rotatable member, each of said pawls having a part adapted to be moved into a position to engage said stop, and means controlled by the rotation of said rotatable member for projecting said pavvls beyond the periphery of said rotatable member as they approach said stops.
14. A speed regulating device, comprising a rotatable member having a circumferential channel in the periphery thereof, and having a plurality of slots formed in one Wall of said channel, a stop arranged above and'adjacent to the periphery of said rotatable member, a plurality of pavvls pivotally mounted in said channel and each having a pin extending through one of the slots, and a fixed actuating device arranged alonside of said rotatable member and having a part extending into the path of said pins to impart outward movement to the successive pawls as they approach said stop.

In a device of the character described, the combination With a shaft, and means for rotating the same, of a disk-like detent carrier rigidly secured to said shaft, a plurality of detents movably mounted on and spaced about said carrier, a casing surrounding said shaft and inclosing said detent carrier and having a stop arranged adjacent to the periphery of said detent carrier, and means controlled by the rotation of said carrier for successively moving said detents into positions to engage said stop.
16. In a device of the character described, the combination with a shaft, and means for rotating the same, of a detent carrier rigidly secured to said shaft, a plurality of detents movably mounted on said carrier, and each having a laterally extending pin, a fixed casing surrounding said detent carrier and hav ing a plurality of stops arranged adjacent to the periphery of said detent carrier, and an actuating member rigidly secured to said casing and having a plurality of cam projections extending into the path of the pins carried by said detents and arranged to move each detent into alinement with the respective stops.
17 In a device of the character described, the combination with a shaft and means for rotating the same, of a detent carrier rigidly secured to said shaft and having a circumferential channel in the periphery thereof and having slots in one side Wall of said channel, a plurality of paWls pivotally mounted in said channed, and each having a pin xtending through one of said slots, a casing surrounding said detent carrier and having a plurality of slots therein arranged adjacent to the periphery of said detent carrier, those portions of the Wall of said casing lying between said slots constituting stops, and an actuating device rigidly secured to said casing alongside of said detent carrier and having a plurality of cam projections arranged to engage the pins of said pavvls as said carrier is rotated and successively actuate said paWls to cause a part of each pawl to extendinto the successive slots, and to release said pawls at points in advance of the respective stops.
