To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CLARENCE LLOYD LIKEN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Enid, in the county of Garfield and State of Oklahoma, have in vented new and useful Improvements in F lagmens Lanterns, of which the following is a specification.

The object of the invention is to provide a simple and compact signaling device for fiagmen, designed to be combined in one structure all of the necessary means and devices for signaling either in daylight or at night, to the end that when a fiagman is called into service without knowing for what length of time he may be required to serve or be retained on duty, his necessary equipment comprehended in one signaling article such a signaling lantern will furnish him with all of the apparatus necessary for both daylight and night signaling, and therefore, the risk of overlooking any apparatus that might be required in case of the prolongation of the term of service will be eliminated, and with these objects in View, the invention consists in the construction and combination of parts of which a preferred embodiment is shown ,in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a side view of embodying the invention.

The lantern proper as indicated at 10 may be of the ordinary or any preferred the apparatus of the signal flag showing the mount- ,construction having a hollow base 11 forming a receptacle for the lamp fount 12 and accessible by means of a suitable door or closure 13 and of dimensions adapting it as a container for torpedoes 14 as well as matches and like similar articles incidental to the equipment of a fiagman. Arising from the base at suitable intervals are the sockets 15 designed for the reception of the terminals 16 of fusees 17 which at intermediate points are engaged by rings or eyes 18 carried by the guard 19v of the lantern globe, the construction illustrated embodying three of these seats (consisting of the rings 18 and the sockets 15) for fusees and in addition there is provided in an upright position, rising from the base 11 a tubular casing 20 fitted with a removable cap 21 to which is attached the staff 22 of a signal flag 23. Obviously the lantern is adapted to beused in the ordinary way and may be provided with a red globe or with a double sided or convertible globe, and at the same time the fiagman has within convenient reach the other signaling means such as torpedoes, fusees, etc., which may be readily removed or detached from the apparatus for use as required and should the term of service of the flagman extend beyond that during which the lantern may be used eiiiciently, the signal flag may be withdrawn from the casing and be employed in the ordinary way, while when not in use, said flag is obviously protected and is compactly arranged in relation to the lantern in such conditions as not to interfere with the convenient use of the latter.

In practice, the rings or eyes 18 which serve in combination with the sockets 15 to form seats for the fusees, and also as a means for bracing the upper portion housing the tube for the signal flag, are removed as attachments to or contacts of the wires or rods constituting the guard 19 of the lantern globe and the arrangement of the fusee seats and the flag housing tube in pairs upon the opposite sides of the plane of the handle or bail 24 does not interfere with the arrangement of the latter or the manipulation of the lanterns by means thereof.

The invention having been described, what is claimed as new and useful is In combination with a fiagmans lantern having a base and a globe guard upstanding on the base and provided with aguide ring disposed in parallelism with but spaced from the base. a tubular casing disposed within the guide ring and having one end resting upon the base, a removable cap fitted in the upper end of the casing, and a signal flag disposed within the casing and provided with a staff attached to said cap, whereby the flag and staff may be withdrawn from the casing upon the removal of the cap.
