UNITED STATES PATENT oFFIcE.
LABS ANDERSON, oF oHIcAGo, ILLINOIS.
. MEcHANrcAn MOVEMENT.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, LARs ANDERSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illino1s,vhave invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mechanical Movements, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in mechanical movements particularly adapted though not necessarily limited in its use in connection with reciprocating pumps, air compressors and vacuum producers, and one of the objects of the invention is to provide improved means whereby the rotary move- 'ment of a shaft or driven element will be 'small degree of movement of the various parts.
A further object is to provide improved means for lubricating the various parts.
To the attainment of these ends and the accomplishment of oth-er new and useful objects as will appear, the invention consists in the features of novelty in substantially the construction, combination and arrangement of the several parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed and shown in the accompanying drawings illustrating this invention and inl which- Figure 1 is an irregular, vertical, longitudinal, sectional view with parts in elevation and parts broken away.
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view taken on line 2-2 Fig..1.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on line 3 3 Fig.' 1.
Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view taken on line 4 4 Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 is a view of a detail with parts broken away. i
Fig. 6 is a view of a ydetail with parts broken away.
Referring more particularly to the drawings the numeral 10 designates a supporting Specication of Letters Patent.
ratntea oet. 4,1921.
' Application led September 1, 1920. Serial No. 407,510'.
base upon which the structure is mounted and arranged `at one end of the lbase is a casting 11, having a plurality of cylinders 12, therein and the casting-is preferably provided with laterally projecting flanges 13, adapted to engage and rest uponsupports 14, carried by the base 10, and through which flanges 13, bolts 15, are adapted to pass to engage the uprights 14, for securing thecaSting in position. i
Air circulation passages 16, are provided in the castinor and each of the cylinders is provided with the usual cooling, ribs or flanges 17 arranged about their peripheries.
These cylinders may be of any desired size and one end-of the, cylinders is adapted to be closed by means of a head 18, secured in position by means of suitable fastening bolts 19. The head is provided with an inlet port 20 for each of the cylinders, 12,
controlled by a spring control valve 21, and
an outlet port 22, controlled by a spring control valve 23, operating in opposition to the valve 21. The outlet passage 22, is connected by means of a port or passage 24, so that fluid which flows through the outlet passage 22, will be discharged through the passage 24, to the point of use.
Reciprocating in each of the cylinders 12, is a hollow piston 25, having a bearing 26, at one end thereof, and in each bearing an enlarged circular extremity'27, of a piston rod section 28, rests. `A collar 29 is threaded into the open endof the piston and this collar 29, is provided with a seat ada ted to rest against the enlarged extremity 2 of the piston rod section for holding the rod in position. If desired a lock nut or collar 30 may also be provided for holding the collar 29 against displacement. n
Mounted upon the other end of the base 10, is a support 31 having an opening 32 therethrough extending longitudinally thereof and arranged at the end ofvthis opening 32 are bearings 33, in which bearing is journaled a shaft 34, which is adapted to receive its motion from a suitable motor 35, through the medium of a sprocket chain 36, passing over a sprocket wheel 37, which is secured to the shaft 38, of the motor. The sprocket chain also passes over a sprocket wheel 39, secured to the shaft 34.
Interposed between the sprocket Wheel 39, and one of the bearings 33, is a supplemental bearing which may be of any desirable or suitable construction but preferably consists of spaced members 40-41, the member 40 being secured with the sprocket wheel 39' for rotation therewith preferably by means of suitable pins 42, while the member 41 is secured by means of suitable pins 43 wlth the support 31, so that the member 41 will be held against rotation. Balls 44 are arranged between the members 40-41 and these balls 44, are mounted in a 'suitable cage 45.
At the other end of the shaft-34 is a-crankr member 46`which isiconnected with the shaft for rotation therewith, in any suitable man- The shaft is arranged in an inclinedl position to the axis of rotation of the shaft A34, and
l the extremity 50 vof the shaft48 is arrangedv at an angle to the length of the shaft and is so disposed that the axis of the extremity 5() will -be in alinemen't with the4 axis `of `the shaft 34.- This extremity 50 is mounted in a suitable roller beari-A '51, preferably supported by the -cylin er casting 11, intermediate the cylinders 12. It will therefore be seen that when the shaft 34 is rotated the shaft 48 will also be' rotated about the .axis of the extremity 50. f
t Mounted upon the shaft 48, is a wabbler I element 52, the interior diameter of thel hub 53 of which'is considerably -greater than the external diameter of the shaft 48l Roller bearings 54 are connected with the element 52 and in thesev bearings 54, Athe shaft 48 is journaled. Inter-posed between the crank 46 andthe adjacent bearing 54 is another bearing emboding members 55 and 56. The 4member 55 is connected by means of suitable pins 57, with the crank 46 to rotate therewith, while the member 56 is connected by means of pins 58 with the hub 53 of the wabbler so as to hold themember 5 6 against rotation. between the members 55 and 56 and serve to take up the end thrust of the element 52..
The shaft 48 is provided with grooves 60 extending lengthwise thereof and these grooves 60, merge into a single passage 61, which discharges through the extremity 50 of the shaft 48 and in proximity to thebearing 51. The space 62 intermediate the shaft 48A and the interior of the hub 53 of the element 52, serves `as an oil well adapted to.
be supplied with lubricant through a suitable oil cup 63. The other ends of the grooves 60 terminate adjacent the bearing 54 .so that when the shaft 48 is rotated the oil will be fed by gravity first to one `end of the 'shaft through the groove 60 to lubricate the bearings adjacent thereto and-as the shaft Ball bearings 59 are interposed natasciav rotates and the opposite end thereof is lowered, the oil will be fed by gravity to the'bearings adjacent the lowermost end.
Arranged within the element 55 are a plurality of seats 64 having a bearing 65 at the' bottom of each of the seats. A piston rod section 66 is provided with an enlarged circular` extremity A67 resting against the bearing 65 and a collar 68 provided with a seat 69 isthreaded into the end of the seat 64 so thatthe seat 69 will engage theextremity '67104:' the'. piston rod section 66. The piston rod sections 28-66 are detachably connected together in any suitable manner and vto that endthe end of the piston rod sec- 'tion"'28 is recessed as at 70 and is provided with internal screw threads, while the extremity. of the piston rod 66 is reduced as at 71 and is provided with externalI screw threads adapted to engage the threads in the seat 70. y.A fastening bolt 7 2 may be provided for securing these twosections together.
With this construction it will be 'manifest that as the shaft- 34 is rotated the crank 46 will be rotated and the shaft 48 will be turnedby the crank 46 about the axisy formed by the end 50 of the shaft.v `This rotary movement ofy theshaft 48, will impart an oscillatorymovement or a wabbling action to the wabbler element 52 and during this movement of the latter element the piston rods will cause the respective pistons 25 to be reciprocated in the respective cylinders 12. As the piston in each of the, cylinders 25 moves away vfrom the head 18, the inlet valve 21 wil-l be unseated by the suction thus created and the fluid will be' drawn in through the opening 73 through the port 20 and into the cylinder 12. Upon the return stroke, and when the flu-id thus drawn in has been compressed to the desired degree, a further movement of the piston 25 in the same direction will unseat the valve 23 to discharge the fluid through the passage 22 and into the passage *24,
rl `his operation takes place in each of the cylinders 12.
.By the construction of the sectional pis- -ton rods it will 'bemanifest that the parts may be readily assembled and may be readily disconnected when desired and it will also be manifest that a very etiicient and operative structure will be provided without necessitating but a small degree of movement of the pistons 25 and the operating parts therefor.
The pistons and piston rods may be lubricated in any desirable or suitable manner 'preferably by means of an oil cup 74, and
passages 75 in the piston rods. The circular extremities 27 and 67 of the piston rod sections may be provided with recesses 7 5-76 opening through their peripheries for the purpose of lightness, and these recesses may serve as grease cupsif desired.
The opening 32 in the support 31 through which the shaft 34 passes is of a diameter considerablyV greater than the external diameter of the shaft 34 so as to form` an oil well adapted to be supplied with oinl through the medium of an oil cup'77, and the oil is fed by means of suitable grooves 7 8 in the."`
wardlyv projecting shoulder 79 extending p longitudinally of the base. A removable member 80 is secured by means of fastenlng vbolts 81 to the base to form the opposite wall of thev guide. An anti-friction roller 82 is connected in any suitablemanner such as by means of a bolt 83 with the wabbler element 52 and this roller 82 moves back and forth in the. guide 7 8 as motion is imparted to the wabbler.
The crank 46 is weighted as at 84 for the purpose of counterbalancing the Vshaft and the wabbler element 52.
A shield or housing 85 is provided as a Coverfor the wabbler element 52 and if dci sired ashield or cover 86 may also be provided for the sprocket wheels`37-39 and the sprocket chain 36.` If desired and as a I means for holding the collar 68' against accidental displacement, ai. spring controlled locking dog 87 may be provided which is adapted to engage teeth 88 on the 'collar 68.
While the preferred form ofthe invention has herein been shown and described, itis lo be understood that tvarious'changes may be made in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts within the scope of the claims vWithout departing from the spirit `of this invention.
