Description

R. L. THOMPSON. DOOR CATCH.
Patented Sept. 27, 1921.
p w m T A w M O 2 9 1 9 3 1 PATENT OFFICE,
ROY I4. THOMPSON, 0F BEND, OREGON.
DOOR-CATCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Se t, 27, 1921.
1 Application filed September 23, 1920. Serial No. 412,161.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that R01 L. THOMPSON, a citizen of the United States, residin at Bend, in the county of Deschutes and tate of Oregon, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Catches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in spring catches, having for an object to provide a catch particularly adaptable for use in connection with the doors of cabinets, cupboards or any analogous 0r similar types of doors whose construction is generally light, whereby such a door will be securely retained in a closed or locked position when engaged by the catch, and which, when said catch is disengaged therefrom, will have an outward or opening thrust imparted thereto, thus materially facilitating the swinging of the same to its full open position if so desired. 7
Among other aims and objects of the invention may be recited a catch of the character mentioned with a view to compactness and in which the number of parts is few, the construction simple, the cost of production small, and furthermore,'a catch which will efi'ectually function for the purpose to which it is designed.
Other objects will be in part obvious and in part pointed out, hereinafter.
In order that the invention and its mode of operation may be readily understood by persons skilled in the art, I have in the accompanying illustrative drawings and in the following detailed description based thereon, set out a particular embodiment of the same.
In these drawings:
Figure 1 is an inside view in elevation of a horizontally swinging door and its casing with the catch applied thereto, and
Fig. 2 is an edge view in elevation of the casing showing the catch'in side elevation also. f
Having more particular reference to the drawings, in connection with which like characters of reference will designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, 1" indicates a door casing,'such for instance, as is to be found inany ordinary cabinet or cupboard, receiving therein a hinged horizontally swinging door 2. c The improved catch comprises a sprin plate 3, the upper portion of is 0 set as at 4 and provided with an opening for receiving the screw threaded extension 5 carried on the inner end of the push rod 6, this push rod being provided with "a suitable head or thumb piece 7 and being located adjacent the outer side of the casing 1 for an obvious purpose. A nut 5 may be, and preferably is, turned into engagement with the screw threaded end 5 and has engagement with the offset dot the catch plate for coupling the same to the push rod 6. Furthermore, if desired, a suitable form of bushing 8 may be arranged in the opening through which the push rod 6 passes, and obviously, will aflord an effectual bearing for said rod. An inwardly disposed cupped extension 9 is formed on the lower end of the inwardly inclined spring catch plate 3 and receives one end of the coil spring 10 therein, the remaining end of the spring being seated in the recess 11 formed in the casing 1. To provide a mounting fOr' the plate '3, the same is formed with a substantial right angularly disposed finger 12 having pivotal connection at 13 with an anchor plate 14 secured to the edge of the casing 1 by screws 15, the said finger having a hooked element or catch 16 formed thereon V and adapted to be engaged, at times, with a laterally extending pin 17 carried on the adjacent edge of the horizontally swinging door 2, the outer marginal portion of the catch 16 being provided with a rounded bearing surface in order that the pin 17 may be engaged therewith by merely forcing the door inwardly to its closed position.
By reason of the connection of thecoil spring 10 with the cupped extension 9 on the lower end of the inwardly inclined catch plate 3, it will be understood that) the lower end of' this catch plate will be normally maintained in spaced relation to the casing 1 and its door 2, and in consequence by reason of the pivotal connection of the finger 12 with the casing 1, the catch 16 will be normally maintained in position for engaging and retaining the pin 17 on the door 2. However, by imparting an inward thrust to the push rod 6, the catch plate 3 'will be rocked against its inherent tension and the tension of the coil spring 10 thereby swinging the catch 16 upwardly and disengaging the same from the pin 17 in order that free outward movement of the door 2 will be p m t-ted W press espring means engaging the lower end of under tension 'by the same upon closure said plate for normally maintaining the thereof, said arcuate spring being operable same in spaced relation to the adjacent porimmediately upon this disengagement of 10 tion of said casing, and an outwardly exthe catch with the door for imparting an 5 tending arcuate spring adjustably connected opening thrust to the latter.
to one side of the lower portion of said i In testimony whereof I aflix my signature. plate engageable by said door and placed ROY L. THOMPSON.
