Be it known that we, YVILLIAMSE; Ep- WAnns and HARRY 0. STALKER, cit zens of the United States, residing at'Johnson: City and Binghamton, respectively, in the county of Broome and State of New York, have-invented certain new and usefulImprovements in Size and Style Stamps for Insoles and Outsoles of Shoes, of which the following is a specification. a V

Our invention relates to improvements in size and: style'stamps for insoles :and-outsoles of shoes whereby the marks for classification of size and style for outsolesand insoles'may be applied 'in'the same operation,

with the shaping orv cutting of the sole, and

it has for its object to provide a simple, neat, accurate, rapid and effective method of marking the soles for sorting and classifying. With these objects in view, our invention consists of certain novel features of construction and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully described and pointed out in the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side view of our device in operation, as applied to the sole of a shoe;

It is well understood that our device is applied to the usually operative mechanism for shaping the soles of shoes. It is well understood that the present method of sorting and classifying outsoles and insoles after being shaped is laborious and cumbersome. After they have been shaped to a pattern they have to be sorted according to style and size, and this is accomplished, in one way, by the operator dashing a mark of paint with a brush of some color over those Specification'of Letters Patent.v

and on the under side of face plate 2, we removably mount in any convenient manner the pressure plate 5 which may. be of the same general outline as the style pattern 4;

Across the under face of' plate 5 we inlet a cross channel or groove y having the in- Wardly beveled sides or edges 5 5; slidably mounted in the groove *1 we have the stamping plate 7 having on its outer surface the raised letters or figures 8, 8 indicating the size and style marks to be made on the upper surface of the insole or outsole beingv out.

In our mechanism as stated, we make useof the usual mechanically operated cutting knife 2) adapted to move around the pattern 4; in the upper surface of pattern 4 we have the channel or groove 9. In channel 9 vwe mount the stamping plate 10 having on its outer surface the raised letters or figures 11, 11, indicatin the size and style marks to be made on t e surface of the insole or outsole being out. On the pattern 4 we place the sole leather 6 to be cut and marked, which is held in position for cutting in any convenient manner. The cutting knife b ismoved around the pattern 4 in the usual method of a sole shaping mechanism, and thus cuts the sole 6 in conformity to the outline of the pattern 4; at the same time the pressure of plate 5'upon the sole 6 causes the marking letters 8, 8 to be impressed upon the upper surface of the sole 6; the pressure of the leather 6 on stamping plate 10 mounted in the surface of pattern t causes the letters or figures 11, 11 of stamp to beimpressed in the under surface of the sole 6; and in this manner the size and style marks may be impressed upon both sides of the Or thestamp mayberemoved from plate '5'and a new set of letters therein inserted to correspond with the letters or marks on another 7 pattern, inserted for use.

stamp 7 may be removed and an impression made only from stamp in the surface of the pattern 4. Having thus marked the inj soles and outsoles when out, they can be immediately sorted and grouped into their 110' proper classificationpreparatory to use.

Having thus described our invention, what we claim'as new and for" which we desire Letters .Patent, is as follows: 7 1.
