A TTORNE Y.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
AARON B. HEANEY, OF STILLWATER, OKLAHOMA.
WRENCH.
Application filed April 2, 1921.
' vision of a wrench having a movable jaw,
and wherein the movable jaw is forced toward the stationary jaw continually during the use of the wrench.
A further object of the invention is to provide a wrench of this character wherein the structure employed is extremely simple and wherein the movable jaw is very solidly supported to prevent the breakage in this type of wrench.
Other objects and advantages will become apparent throughout the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, and wherein like reference characters designate like parts throughout:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a wrench constructed in accordance with my invention, showing in solid lines the wrenchengaged with a pipe, and showing in dotted lines the wrench handle shifted to move the movable jaw away from the stationary jaw;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged side elevation thereof. one of the side plates being broken away;
Fig. 3 is an end elevation thereof, and
Fig. 4 is a top plan view thereof.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, the numeral 10 indicates a stationary jaw reduced as at ll, to provide an attaching extension 12 to which, as by means 'of rivets 13, are secured side plates 14:.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 20, 1921. Serial No. 457,943.
ably receive the inturned flanges of the side plates 14. The lower end of the base 17, whlch is reduced and slidable intermediate the plates 14: has formed upon the lower face thereof a rack 19.
Mounted in the side plates 14 is a pivot pin 20 upon which is pivotally mounted one end of a handle member 21. This end of the handle member 21 has an enlarged head 22 forming a mutilated gear meshing with the rack 19 of the movable jaw. It will be seen that upon movement of the handle from the position shown in solid lines in Fig. 2 to the position shown in dotted lines, the movable jaw will be projected toward the stationary jaw. Particular attention is directed to the fact that when the movable jaw 17 is in the full open position as shown in the dotted lines in Fig. 2, the base 17 is still completely engaged by the side plates and the movable jaw is accordingly very solidly held.
Many changes being possible in the shape, size and arrangement of the various parts herein shown without in any manner departing from the spirit of my invention, I do not limit myself to the specific structure hereinabove set forth except as hereinafter claimed.
What I claim is:
A wrench comprising a fixed jaw embodying a reduced extension projecting rearwardly and downwardly therefrom, side plates secured to said reduced extension and each provided at its forward side with angular flanges directed toward each other, a base member having grooves formed therein slidably receiving said flanges, a jaw formed upon said base at the end thereof next adjacent the fixed jaw, a rack formed upon the rear edge of said base and lying between said side plates, and a handle pivotally mounted between said side plates and embodying a mutilated gear meshing with said rack to shift said base toward and away from said fixed jaw, said base when withdrawn from said fixed jaw being completely engaged by the said flanges to be supported thereby.
In'testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature.
