Description
E. 8. AND W. H. ADAMS.
STORAGE BATTERY.
APPLICATION FILED JULY I2. 1920.

EDWARD S. ADAMS AND WALTER H. ADAMS, OF COLUMBUS, OHIO.
STORAGE BATTERY.
Application filed July 12,
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we. l lnwann S. Anaus and Vanna H, ADAMS, citizens of the United States, residing at Columbus. in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio. have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Storage Batteries. ot which the following is a specification;
Storage batteries and )articularly such as are used in automobiles lave caused a great deal of annoyance trouble and expense owing to the instability of the connection of the pillar post with the jar cover. Such instability ot connection 'lremlently results in fracture of the cover. leakage of the liquid contents ol the battery and short circuiting and 'wastage' ol current.
The object of the present invention is, principally. to provide an improved connection whereby the troubles recited are overcome or greatly mitigated.
The invention is embodied in the example herein set t'ortln'the features of novelty being linally claimed. v
In the accompanying drawing forming part hereot- I Figure l is principally a longitudinal-sectional view through the cover with attached plates in side view.
Fig. 2 is an end view broken ott" at the bottom.
Fig. 3 is a top plan view.
In the views 5 designates the cover of the socketed or well variety. the character 6 designating the socket thereol'. Said socket (i is of dowu\\'ardl v tapering form. 7 designates the plates or grids which are welded to the pillar post 8. as usual. The pillar post 8 has a threaded member or stem 5'). Upon said stem we turn a thick solid nut It) tapered to lit the socket t3. lte'cesses H) are termed in the upper end of the nut to re-. ceive. a suitable wrench. 'lhe nut is prel'erably made of a thickness to lie [lush with the top of the socket when turned home.
On the pillar post below the. socket portion (3 is a ring washer 12 and in the bottom ot the socket portion (5 is a ring washer 13. When the nut is properly turned down a Specification of Letters Patent.

close, tight fit is secured. In practice we turn in the nut while the cover is in a softened condition so that upon hardening the tightness of tit is accentuated.
With this construction it will be observed that the connection is given extensive contacts in an axial direction of the stem generally speakin hence great resistance to strains cross wise of that direction such as occur when the car is traversing rough roads. It willbe t'mther observed that this extensive connection is secured without increasing the ordinary thickness of the cover. The cover is provided with the usual vent l-t for supplying water or other liquids to thejar.
In constructing the battery we propose to add to the pillar post a strip 15 of hard rubber or other nmucondiu-ting material to hold down the usual wooden separators 16. This strip is pinched between pliable lugs 17 formed on the lower side of the pillar post so as thereby to be. kept in'proper position.
The character 18 designates the cell connector. the open end of which is fitted down over the top of the threaded stem of the pillar post. said stem being spread out and welded over the upper side of the connector to secure it in place.
What we claim is:
1. In a storage battery. the combination with a jar cover having a screw tapered socket open at its bottom. of a pillar post including a threaded stem to extend upward through the open bottom of said socket, and a tapered nut of lead threaded onto said stem and titting in said socket.
2. In a storage battery having a jar and cover. the combination with battery plates secured ona pillar post and separators between the plates. of a hold-down for said separators consisting of a strip extending transversely over the upper edges of the separators, and means on the pillarpost to engage and hold said strip, whereby the cover -an be removed without removing said strip. EDWARD S. ADAMS.
WALTER H. ADAMS.
